The priest teacher and man who left us last September gave to us a spirit of achievement. His titles and accomplishments were numerous, and not mentioning them here is not to say we forget them. But some- thing more impressive Clutches us when they mention Fr. Noel Fitzpatr- ick - the strands of his memory are woven gifts of recognition that he left with us. A smile, a wave from across campus, or your name before he gave you communion are the things we remember He left Siena, but not of his own will - it's as if he were saying, till the last moment, HTogeth- er we are Siena With enthusiasm such as that, we could do no less than take both his example and his love He believed in the divinity of man - because God had touched him, he felt he should share that touch with others. It lives, then, even if he couldn't, and just as he enjoyed us, we enjoy again with his thought in- side ours. An old monk's poem expressed this, and he read it often, taking his confidence from it. 'Twas battered and scared And the auctioneer thought it scar- cely worth his while To waste his time on the old violin But he held it up with a smile. What am I bidden, good people? he cried. Who'll start the bidding for me? A dollar, a dollar, now two, only two? Two dollars once, two dollars twice And who will make it three? Three dollars once, three dollars twice And going and going for three? But no. From the room far back a gray haired man Came forward and picked up the bow. Then wiping the dust from the old violin And tightening up the strings, He played a melody pure and sweet, As sweet as an angel sings. The music ceased and the auctioneer With a voice that was qciiiet and low Said, What am I bid for the old violin? And he held it up with the bow. A thousand dollars, and who'll make it two? Two thousand once, two thousand twice Who'll make it three? Three thousand once, three thou- sand twice And going and gone, said he. The people cheered, but some of them cried, We don't quite understand What changed its worth'i Swift came the reply The touch of the master's hand. And many a man with life out of tune And battered and torn with sin ls auctioned cheap to a thoughtless crowd Much like the old violin. A mass of porridge, a glass of wine, A game and he travels on. He is going once, he is going twice, He's going and almost gone. But the master comes and the fool- ish crowd Never can understand The worth of a soul, and the Change that's Wrought By the touch of the masters hand. TO THE MASTER, AND FR. NOEL FITZPATRICK, WE DEDICATE THIS BOOK.
