Siena College Loudonville, New Yor Volume 26 Photo by Jack Pinto DEDICATION Matthew Conlin, ofm. For the past twenty-five years Fr. Matthew Conlin has devoted his life as a Franciscan Friar to the betterment of Siena Col!ege. It is not often that one finds a man of Father Matthew's stature so willing to delve into the world of student life, and this willingness on his part has been Father Mat- thew's trademark as a professor, administrator and finally as college presi- dent, a position to which Father Matthew has given new meaning. We dedicate SAGA '71 to Father Matthew in recognition of his past con- tributions and with sincere wishes for the best of luck in his term as President. The Indians and a bus- load of spirited fans journeyed to Paterson, New Jersey, to gain a double-win-on the field and in the stands. The Indians were out- numbered, out-platooned, and outweighed. But not outfought. The early part of the season wasn't quite as bright, though. Re- turning from a disappointing 4-4 season in 1969, the Indians lost their first game to Manhattan College 28-14. The second game was also away, but the outcome somewhat more favorable. Siena easily beat Catholic University 37-12. The season's third contest pitted the In- dians against crosstown rival Albany State. Playing before the largest crowd in the club's history, the Indians beat themselves with mental errors and costly letdowns. The eight thousand fans were treated to a 25-24 thriller, but a Siena loss. Unfortunately, a few Siena fans were on the losing end of a battle also. Wait until next year, State. The team's five-game winning streak was started at the expense of Cansius College within the friendly confines of Bleeker Stadium. Siena held the Cansius offense scoreless, but a miscue resulted in a touchdown and a conversion, but still a 15-8 Siena win. The Indians then traveled to Providence, Rhode Island, to pull off a come-from- behind victory, 26-20, over Providence College. Returning home to Mechanicville High's field, the Indians trounced their brother school. St. Bonaventure, 41-16. Funny thing, the team that draws the best Fallon, Treas.. With a .500 season insured, the Indians met Rochester Institute of Technology for its final home tilt. Playing in front of an exuberant Fall Weekend crowd, tand the Fall Weekend Queen hopefulsl, Siena shut out Rochester. The fact that R.l.T. could not engineer a score was a tribute to the fine defense played by Siena all year long. For the sixth victory of the season, and the fifth in a row, Siena beat third-ranked Paterson State. The trimmings of the 1970 football season were bountiful. In the rankings department, Siena finished eighth in the National Club Football rankings and third in the New York State Associated Press ratings for junior colleges, small colleges and club teams. As for the personal honors, Siena was allowed to nominate four players to the All-American Club Football Team. Repeaters Joe Grasso and Mike Shongar headed the list that included defensive back Jim Gillln and tackle George Motler. Siena also landed nine of its footballers on the Metroland All-Star Teams. Any attempts to single out players for individual acknowledg- ments would be futile. Team work and group effort produced a suc- cessful season. While a 6-2 record signifies a good season, the close- ness of the team, the sacrifices everyone made, and the great per- sonal compromises of all connected with the team made it a great, winning season. 1970 ALL AMERICAN Joe Grasso Jim Gillin Mike Shongar George Motler ALL METROLAND TEAMS Charles Taaffe Joe Grasso Mike Shongar George Motler Bob Burns John Martin DEFENSE Jim Gillin Mike Flanagan Mike Conners GOOD D SIENA SIENA SIENA SIENA SIENA SIENA SIENA SIENA 14 37 24 15 26 41 34 19 FALL 1970 RECORD: 6 WINS Manhattan Catholic U. The 1970 season was rather flat record wise, but anyone who saw the Indians play knew different. The Indian stickman lost 5 games by a total of 6 goals, 2 of these coming in sudden-death overtime. 1971 Co-Captains Chris Tanski and Rap Brown were instrumental in all of the games, while graduating seniors Mike Fade- away Flanagan and Mike uZeke Garett brought power to the midfield and attack. Then juniors Phil Lockwood, Bill Fitzgerald, Mike Wierzbowski, John Boscarino, Tom Conroy and Tom Karl also aided the team, filling out the various positions. The high point of the season was a convincing 12-3 trounc- ing of arch-rival Albany State. Rap Brown was awarded the MVP trophy at the end of the season for his outstanding play. Conditioning and hustle are a definite part of any Lacrosse team and Siena is no exception. Head Coach Russ Ferris and assistant coach Nick Calmarino made sure that both aspects were part of the Indians' play. With such outstanding underclassmen as Jay Conners, John Gevin and Bob Plesic around, Siena's future success is just about guara nteed. 187 188 M au-i . t: N F m 9153 189 190 PEOPLE 192 Life everywhere is full of things to love fl m W AM mw-mw mekw WWW MWWM w -W , ww .
