sieaa college saga mangent londonville. my. vol.1 Telling a story often means stretching the imagination a bit, especially when that story lasts for four years; sometimes hazy remembrances will be a little distorted, a little blown out of proportion: and so, what started out to be a bed-time tale for children becomes an entire saga, simply because-- THIS IS COLLEGE! 10 13 14 16 17 ? All so fresh in your mind, now... 25 24 L sw But what if, say five, maybe ten years from now . . . 25 . . . somebody vvere to conne up to you and ask, what was college like. back in 1969? M ' : L M - HOW MUCH WILL YOU REMEMBER? m I'll remember everything! I'll remember how. day after day it seemed, there was always somebody shouting things at you, and you took their word for it, usually for the lack of a better idea . .. . . . but then their ideas would begin to grow within your mind and finally it was your turn to tell the story. Sometimes, fortunately, you were understood . . . 3O . . and other times, of course. you might be misunderstood. But this was the exciting thing aboot Siena; there were so many different things to do, so many ways to express yourself that it was the best four years of my life! 31 It was a gas! There was so much happening everywhere if you only knew where to find it; whether it was turning on to the magic of a wizard prof . . . . . . or taking a soft rocket . . . this place was a circus of things to do! And I suppose I'll never forget when they finally fixed up that quad and gave us some real good grass. trip through the tissue factory . . . I'll remember mostly frustration at Siena. Many times I sat in the library, tried to read a book and found myself looking curiously at someone's hands or face or eyes. As soon as the other pair of eyes glanced at mine . .. 54 . . . I'd flee back to my book. If it were only possible to smile or to say 'hello.' But an expression or W95: a word would be totally misunderstood. l have often to remind myself that people around me are really human beings. The atmosphere stifles human contact. In order to concentrate on imbibing books, we come together in a tomb. 55 Fred Fister My four years at Siena College, with its added responsibilities. was a wonderful challenge for me. not just in the sense of wondering where that next diaper was coming from . . . . . . but in that it demanded an awareness, both physical as well as mental, that made my college experience an unforgettable one. 37 The greatest part about Siena that I'll remember is that here you were on your own; there was nobody here yelling at you to do things. I , r- , a don't mean things like wearing socks or getting a haircut or keeping your room cleaned up all the time . . . 38 . . . I mean that here you were making all the decisions yourself, decisions that might determine your whole lifetime! At first I felt very apprehensive about it; here were so many , choices being thrust in front of me. And I had to choose between them. Now I'll remember it was all so exciting! 39 4O Www mp, N W .- m away w w w. N N. Well, at least I got a free pair of shoes out of it. 41 What really surprised me here was to find out that a guy in the brown robe with three knots in his rope could actually be a regular guy- - maybe even your best friend . . . . . . but I suppose I was surprised at many things here, such as the changes in the liturgy. But the beauty of it all was the great spirit II in which it was all carried out. 44 There definitely was a spirit here at Siena. Oh sure, I suppose every college has its plague of apathy. ,a. Cunha was more than a college coach; he was a teacher and a builder. At his induction into the Siena Hall of Fame, his long-standing friend and- rival, coach Tommy Niland of LeMoyne, expressed it well when he said, Dan Cunha was a great coach and gave the game much; but above that, he was a man who took young kids out of high school and taught them how to go out into the world as men. It is in gratitude of this achievement that the Class of ,69 dedicates this year- book to Coach Dan Cunha. 131 Eusebius Arundel, ofm May 20, 1920- November 7, 1968 He who knows and knows he knows He is wise, follow him He who knows and knows not he knows He is asleep, awaken him He who knows not andknows he knows not He is a child, teach him He who knows not and knows not he knows not He is a fool, shun him. eauthor unknown Professor Roland Allen September 19, 1909- November 20, 1968 152 Ammian, Richard D. 2166 13th Street Troy, New York B.S. Brian Duffy, ofm President of Siena College The Sieno scene has indeed changed in the doz- en and more years since I was here before. One word expresses that change t GROWTH! The most obvi- ous is the physical expansion of the campus. The bar- ren fields have given way to three new residence halls, a dining hall and of particular pleasure to me, the magnificent new science facility, Roger Bacon Holl. As I goze out over the campus from Bocon, l reo- Iize that the growth has not been in only one dimen- sion. I can detect new depths dedication in both facul- ty and students in all dimensions. It's exciting to see that these seemingly divergent expansions do indeed converge on the real and origin- ol purpose of Sieno - to promote the growth of Sieno men '05 mature and responsible members of Society.' While engaged in the quest for truths about the many segments of life and know- ledge, one finds excitement in likewise seeking for the thread called 'Truth' which binds the truths together in a meaningful pattern. The fact that Catholic and Protestant can share together in a free atmosphere suggests that conditioning factors in the evolu- tion of belief are changing - that the existential grasp of Truth as- sumed no particular shape or for- mat a but that the continuity of essence within that evolutionary quest assumes that yesterday has a stake in tomorrow but likewise that tomorrow is never hindered by yesterday. - Dr. Ralph Elliot Theology Cyprian Lynch, ofm Historx Mr. John McKenna Mr. Alexander Cruden Spanish Accounting Capt. More than I person- ally can remember, Siena College is presently in the eye of a great storm of renewal and re-evoluotion. Although much of this storm has been caused by outside forces, this in no way takes away from the frightening and exhilarating feeling that the storm brings to each of us. But challenge and decision mean thought, planning and risk. If nothing else, in this one year alone, amidst social and political upheaval in our country, and religious upheaval within our church, we at Siena have had a chisel thrust into our hand, our common hand: administration, faculty and stu- dents. We have some small amount of time allotted to us to carve out of 'an- other Catholic College' an undeniable place in the educational system of our country and our church. e Juniper M. It seemed like it was going to be a dismal year for the football club at the outset of pre-season practice, because the club's charter was suspended until they could produce sufficient capital to finance the team. But low and behold, the magic of perseverance and deter- Willi! mination by the club officers, and the never-tiring work of head coach ' t Art Cardi, were able to re-instate the club in good graces. Now it was up to the players and the coaching staff to produce a team which the school could rally around the flag with. And that it did. This years, Indians produced the first undefeated season in club foot- ball at Siena and when the last whistle had blown, the team was the second ranked club in the nation. To add to its then already incredabie accomplishments, it won the Mayorls Trophy in the only post-season game played this year by a club team. The club was directed by the coaching talents of Head Coach Art Cardi and his able assistants, Paul Baron and Gerry DeFransico. The running attack was spearheaded by the super frosh All-American Joe Grasso, who led the nation in scoring and who was second in rushing. The short yardage was handled by block-busting Dan Belsito, with Severs, Ward, Miccio, Motler, and All-American Jim Garrett opening up the holes. The passing of Jim Gaudet to the sure hands of Mike Shon- gar, Steve Engle, and Brad Spring balanced off the attack. The tenacious defense was led by the hard-nose playing of Dick Halleck and the vicious tackling of Tom Early, who made Saturday af- ternoons a nightmare for the opposing quarterbacks. Joe King was re- sponsible for the center of the defensive line, while the cool head of Jimmy Smith took care of the secondary by leading the team in inter- ceptions. Next years team looks like it could be a repeat of this years terriffic record. Returning next year will be the likes of Bud Guido, Mike Fianna- gan, Mike Shine, Bill Cassidy, and the many other members of the ttamazing 29. This can be attri- buted to Coach Russ Ferris' ability to make the team give 11092, all the time. This is evident in upset wins over supposedly stronger Clarks- son, CCNY, and U.-Conn. Lacrosse is by far the most popular spring sport at Siena, thrilling fans with fine stick work and plenty of hard-hitting play. They did have two superb juniors, Bob Her- man and Mike Seymour. Bobby broke the record for most points in a season, in a game, and in a half; he scored the most field goals, he attained the highest average a- in fact, what records he doesn't hold he will next year. Likewise, Seymour showed himself to be an excellent athlete; in- deed, he made the AlI-East selection a three times! Mike was also one of the top foul shooters in the nation; next year he should be number one. The high point of the season was enjoyed at the Albany State game, which was the best team effort the Siena club made all season, and it showed e a 73-64 victory over the tournament bound Danes before a capacity crowd. It was a great win and Sienamen will look forward to many more in the near future. Four 69ters have worn the green and gold for the last time. They will be missed and they, cer- tainly, will miss Siena. Tom Sheridan added the rebounding the Indians needed against many tough opponents. Bill Lamb, the floor general, threw in many clutch baskets and took charge when the situation demanded it. Lee Smith was an invaluable co-captain who kept the team spir- it alive in some of its darker moments. Jack Lynch filled in at both forward and guard posi- tions and did a fine job at both spots. With four of the first six men back next year, including sharpshooter Tommy Welch and ball- handler Bob Ledger, things will look up. They will have a strong bench with returning lettermen Noel Byrne, Grant Lehman, Rich Jerard and John Donegan.
