Al- though The Little Theater has found itself, of late, plagued with technical difficulties such as an out- dated sound system and a limited space, they were able to produce not only drama with great quality, but brought to the stage of the Little Theater a depth of young, worthwhile actors. The 1967a 68 season saw the first time a Freshman was used in a lead. This past fall, The Little Theater produced HThe Lady's Not For Burning, a fine production under the direction of Fr. Vianney dealing with a theme of juxtaposed desires, as a death wish con- fronts a life wish. In the winter, The Little Theater produced four one-act plays, but in an attempt for a unity of theme and endeavor, the production was entirely the student's doing. Although the evening presented a cross-section of themes of death, lost love, maternal realism, and ethnic humor, a unity was accomplished by the exemplary acting and directing of the members. 80 favorably reviewed was the evening, that The Little Theater continued making a production entirely a student's endeavor with its spring production of HLuv. Other than producing outstanding perfor- mances, the 1967-68 Little Theater proved itself an orginization with a depth of ability, capable of the quality of professionalism. g.gggiiu ,Ekeatm? ,w I, 9L ?isiixxg. gait 7 Moon Shines Ov r Kylenamore The Zoo Story 47 ?????gm 2: a K f f O t e G O T t n m d H m e In T p 0 t S n 0 .U m o The Assoc 34 Greyfriar Lecture Series James Holly Hanford Milton and Italy Cleanth Brooks William Faulkner on the Mercantile Spirit Louis Martz A Modern Trio: Pound, Eliot, Williams 55 Career 3 4 x w? 56 ROTC Annual Review 57 58 Coileges measure their greatest strength not only in available educational curricula, but also in the facili- ties that these courses employ. On May 20, 1967, the Feast of St. Bernardine of Siena, the college dedicated its new science building, the Roger Bacon Science Hall. This new edifice offers the student the most modern scientific instruments to work with, at the same time adding a complementary touch to the entire styling of the campus. These available facilities include physics, chemistry, and biology laboratories plus special labora- tories for spectroscopy, X-ray analysis and nuclear phys- ics. Also included are several research areas adjacent to the teaching laboratories, and faculty offices located on each floor for easy access to the laboratories. Instructional facilities include seminar rooms, class- rooms and a 160-seat lecture hall. A distinctive feature of the hall is the rear-projection system for the dis- play of television, films, and slides. Financed through the State Dormitory Authority and a grant from the U.S. under the Academic Facilities Act of 1964, Roger Bacon Science Hall is but one more small step in the continuous growth of a college actual- izing its own maturity. 1w: v..au-u- . -g; he w 59 9 Milli!!! mu W W ,,,,,, lllll 1: HHH WWW.1;me 11 1 1 11 3; 1 1 1 W W1 , Jhcml mHHHH NH H WI ' 1 :wWWW w!: w 1 'HIHM , W H, W 1 ,, N Hum 1111 W J W W13 ; w 1' h 1 HHHW mw WW MW 11 uHHW W IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII NW 1W w WHHHMM w M 1:H? Many Siena men feel there is not. The Siena Big Brothers is one of the largest, most active, and highly regarded student organizations on campus. It is because of the Siena Big Brothers that some seventy boys from the Albany area have someone to look up to and go to for guidance. Besides the regular visits to the homes of the little brothers, several special events are planned each year for them. This year the program began with the annual outing held at Thatcher Park. The outing was its usual success, featuring lots of football, soft. ball, and enough hot dogs and hamburgs to fill the lively army of hungry kids. Also included in the year's agenda was the annual Christmas party. With the aid of local merchants, the Big Brothers were able to help Santa make this Christmas a little richer for the little brothers. Transportation to get to see the little brothers has always been a big problem in the past, but this year, through the efforts of Fr. James Sny- der llour non-leading leader, the problem was answered. The Big Both- ers are now proud owners of a green and gold bus, aptly named The Little Fraternity. In addition, through the courtesy of Armory Garage of Albany, the Big Brothers have had the use of a station wagon for their visits. Spring Semester saw the Big Brothers in full operation, with trips to the Ice Capades, the Circus, and a camping trip to acquaint the boys with some new, healthful and exciting experiences. Spring also brought with it a new experience in aviation, as the Big Brothers, with the help of the Green Circle Society, were able to get free plane rides for all the little brothers. 77 78 79 Alpha Mu Gamma Row 1, Neil Granlees, Donald Daw- son, John Rowe, Row 2, Mr. Joseph Myers, Moderator; Leo Nevarra, James Legasse, Edward White, Gary Robinsoanoward Needham Gavel Club Joseph Keeley, ofm, Moderator; Richard Gilhooly, John O'Brien, Michael Burke, Timothy White 80 Greyfriar Society Row 1, Christopher Newtown, James Mc- Donnell, Peter Tongue, John Black; Row 2, Michael Shea, William Caposto, James Le- gasse, Walter Church, William Tuttle, Dennis Coker v j . Hm Sports 92 Basketball Varsity Cagers, Row 1, Harold Groom and Michael Long, co-captains; Row 2, Thomas Ryan and Philip Genatiempo, managers; Robert Leger, Timothy Mullins, Noel Byrne. Basketball has always been THE traditional sport at Siena. In years gone by, it has been a great tradition; more recently the tradition has been re- duced to explaining away lost ballgames. Last season was no exception as the Indians failed to produce a winning season and had to settle for a a record. There were several lessons to be learned from the 1967-68 basketball season. Probably the most obvious of these is that success cannot be ob- tained overnight. Victory-hungered fans saw in the college's three-year-old scholarship program an instant formula for a return to greatness. The 1967-68 season proved differently. The season was plainly no banner year for SienaVs cagers. The Indians had some luck at the outset, but by midseason had plunged into an eight- game losing streak. Winning three games in a row boosted hopes somewhat, Michael Smyth, Lee Smith, Thomas Sheridan, Robert Hermann, John Lynch, Paul Lavigne, Michael Seymour, Patrick Cain, Coach Thomas Hannon. but the old problems continued to plague Siena for the remainder of the year. For some the spirit never slakened, but for others the season was plainly too much and too long to handle. One man who plainly never lost confidence was Coach Tom Hannon, who willingly bore the responsibility for the season. The season was not without its bright spots. Co-captains Harry Groom and Mike Long put in tremendous performances throughout the season. On top of this, a crop of good young talent gave a fine account of itself and led to optimistic talk of better things in the future. Siena's Freshmen also had their difficulties, although they managed to turn in a fine record in the Northeastern Collegiate Conference. If the season had its disappointments for the fresh, Coach Bill Stanley should be able to take relief in the fact that he produced several fine prospects for the future; which, after all, is what Freshman teams are for. But probably the most dramatic changes to date came about in the 1967 season when the Indian gridmen pushed to a 4-4 record, the best in their history, and were ranked 17th in the nation of 34 teams rated by the Na- tional Football Club Services. Football ClUb The football surge at Siena was not brought about by any one ,, , , man, nor by any particular group of persons. In recent years, Siena has fielded good, rugged teams which have held their own against tough competition. While the 1967 season was not shockingly successful, its 7-4 record nevertheless represented a good showing against strong opponents. Burdened by a small turnout, Coach Russ Ferris' Indians were frequently out- manned two to one at midfield. These and other difficulties proved no deterrents to the desire to win, however, as Siena man- aged to make up for its lack of manpower with conditioning and hustle. TEAM MEMBERS Daniel Belsito Stephen Rogowski Peter Betts Dominic Sapone Thomas Candon Richard Spataro Robert Deazley Richard Tarantino Dennis Dobbin Brian Tierney Stephen Engel Frederick Vollmer Terence Jannot Mark Ward Timothy Jannot Robert Wierzbowski Edward McCarty Playing probably the most popular of the Spring Sports at Siena, the Indian stickmen regularly provided spectators with exhibitions of hard-hitting play. Lead- ing the way for the Indians were co-captains Terry Jannott and Ed McCarty, who both received Most Valuable Player awards at a post-season presentation. Siena's Junior Varsity team, as usual, had its problems with inexperience, as most of its members had never played the game before. Nevertheless, their aggres- siveness and willingness to learn were encouraging for the future of the sport at Siena. VARSITY LACROSSE Siena 10 U. Not so last season, as the club, in spite of a severe second- half slump, managed to generate enough excitement to please any warm weather sports buff. Comprised heavily of seasoned veterans, although some newcomers managed to make their presence felt signifi- cantly, the Indians rolled to four victories in their first five starts. Talk was rampant ofian NCAA bid. Then it happened. Some blame it on poor weather which fouled practice plans, while others simply bemoaned the vengence of the mighty gods of baseball. Siena went into a bad slump and had to scrape to salvage an 8-5 mark for the season. Still, it had to be counted as a good year. Coach Tom Hannonts lndians kept their spirit up and took each game as it came. There was no NCAA bid, but at least there was the warming satisfaction of a winning season. Co-captain Jim Kessing received an award for Most' Valuable Player among the regulars, while Bob Flynn was named Most Valuable Pitcher. In spite of losses due to graduation, the future should be bright for baseball at Siena, as the Freshman team enjoyed one of its best seasons, losing only one game. The long season was made longer by the fact that the Indian harriers managed to post only a 1-6 record in competition. It was made lonelier by the very small turnout of athletes willing to accept the grueling practices and sacrifice, assuredly necessary in the sport. In spite of the poor record, the season was not without its bright spots. A good showing in the Middle Eastern Collegiate Athletic Associa- tion Fall Festival brought the Indians to within three points of a second place finish in the an- nual league meet. The season may also have heralded better things for the future as Siena's freshman team turnedjn a good season, including a first place finish in the Northeastern Collegiate conference. Although Siena's rifle team fit into that pattern last season, the outlook was nevertheless optimistic. . The reason for optimism in the face of defeat lies in the 1967-68 team's scheduling. While the 1966-67 team played a pickup schedule as an independent, the 1967-68 marksmen competed in the tough New York State Intercollegiate Rifle League. One of the most-travelled teams at Siena, the Siena riflemen competed against the Royal Canadian Military Academy as well as an aII-girl team from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Led by captain Charles Murphy, a semi- finalist in the 1967 New York State Amateur Tournament, the Indians pushed to a perfect 8-0 record, the first undefeated season in their history. To cap their perfect season, the Indians finished twenty-second in a field of fifty-seven teams in the National Collegiate Athletic As- sociation Division Tournament held in Paducah, Ky. IIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIII H III IIIIIIIlIII' II I I III III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'I I III I IIII III Student Leaders Student Senate A Brian McCabe Mark McCandlish Dennis Baker Dennis Winger 138 Brian Klim It is extremely difficult to judge any student government, and even more difficult to determine a clear criterion against which the accomplish- ments of the Student Senate can be measured. There can be only one criterion, and that is the actions of past Senates. With these actions as a reference point, the 1967-68 Student Senate has certainly equalled, and in some areas even sur- passed the accomplishments of its predecessors. The Senate ran a thoroughly enjoyable Fall Weekend which prompted us to anticipate an even bigger and better Spring Weekend. The Leader- ship Conference was an acknowledged success, and certainly the whole school can take pride in the outcome of Parent's Weekend. Both class and Senate-sponsored mixers were as successful, both socially and financially, as any held in previous years. The Senate publications this year, the Directory and Handbook, although belated, were praise- worthy accomplishments. There were major struc- tural revisions effected in both the Day-Hop and Academic Committees of the Senate, the fruits of which were found in a stricter unity among the student populace. Though the Senate has faired well, it has, like its predecessors, fallen victim to the age-old crit- icism of merely acting as a social agency and a rather simple buffer between the administration and the student body. But the Student Senate is a representative force, and much to the chagrin of these representatives, it has had to work against a familiar backdrop of student apathy, a not un- common circumstance in colleges today. This in itself seems to perpetuate the lack of freedom for seIf-determination that is encouraged by the old, traditional proponents of an Orwellian academic atmosphere. John Barrett Thomas Dolan Kevin Tucker Robert Bernard Daniel Domball Martin Dunbar 159 Green Circle 3 g ,2, g s William Andersen, Daniel Sleasman, Daniel Tworek Robert Klein Robert Guido 140 Frank Baldassare, Robert Maroney, William Barrett Founded in 1962, as a standing committee of the Student Senate, the Green Circle Society is intended to be the service arm of the Senate, aiding in planning, promotion and execution of Senate events. The Societyts primary functions are to organize the annual Leadership Conference, Parent's Weekend and the spirit committee. With the planning of Chairman Lawrence Mule, the Leadership Conference, which was held Nov. 11, 1967, was an unqualified success. More than fifteen colleges from throughOut the state were represented. Under the direction of Robert Maloney, the Spirit Committee began the year well by organizing a squad of cheerleaders, in- cluding women from area colleges. Two major pep rallies were organized to preceed the Football and Basketball seasons. Parent's Weekend was held May 10-12, 1968 under the direc- tion of Michael Fallon. Author, critic and modern philosopher Rod McEwan was the keynote speaker of the weekend at the dinner dance which was held at the Hall of Springs at Saratoga, NY. The- Rev. Benjamin Kuhn, ofm, professor emeritus at Siena was the featured speaker at the communion breakfast Sunday morn- ing. The society also produced a twenty-five minute film and slide production on Siena life for the parents. The other responsibilities accepted by the society during the year included acting as orientation leaders for the Freshman Class, serving on the initiation committee for the frosh, and serving at BOC mixers. The members also acted as guides for the annual Career Day and the annual College Day, assisted at the registra- tion for a day of seminars sponsored by the Theology Department, and the registration of the diocesan Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. In the Spring, the Green Circle Society was responsible for administering Time Magazine's ttChoice '68 survey'of the political trends on the American campus. William Tuttle Phillip Bullwinkel. James Joyce George Faccioli. Carmen Cognetta I Donald Gilbert 141 142 NFCCS ya. The National Federation of Catholic College Students continued this year its enterprizing activities, committed to the ideal of student involvement outside the academic community, that it may instill in him a realization of his responsibility as a Christian individual to the world at large. This year NFCCS sponsored Nova Core Retreats, week end experiences in community living, as well as a variety of speaker programs. These included panel discussions on such subjects as Black Power, Birth Control, Nar- cotics, and the war in Viet Nam. NFCCS continued its worthwhile projects within the community by tutoring grade school children, and by becoming actively involved in The Appalachia Project and the Easter Albany Project, both of which strive for community development within the less fortunate sectors of our society. Also instituted this year was The Summer in the City Project, a regional programme designed to have one hun- dred students live and work in the ghetto areas in New York City during the summer. During this time, the stu- dents undergo leadership training in an attempt to form a sense of Christian commitment and responsibility to ones fellow man. NFCCS is an organization of college students with a devoted belief and respect for che golden rule who are striving against shields of complacency to witness its realization. As a part of this right, the student body na- turally assumes certain responsibilities and obligations both to itself and to the college. One of these obligations is self- discipline. The students, having the right to govern themselves, must see to it that certain codes of conduct and general rules are enforced for their own general welfare and for the welfare of the college. The pursuance of this objective rests in the hands of the Student Judiciary Committee. A review of the cases acted on during the academic year has shown a definite concern for the rights of the students, both those students who have come before the committee and those students who reap the benefits of its decisions. It has become clear, however, that certain constitutional reforms must be un- dertaken if the committee is to be allowed to function optimally. In March the Student Judiciary Committee began the task of constitutional revision in cooperation with the Committee on Discipline. These revisions will make the Student Judiciary Committee an even more effective arm of the student body for years to come.
