Progress Another class of collegians will graduate this year but not, as classes in the past, before making the innumerable mistakes of youth. Their pre- decessors swallowed goldfish; they demonstrated for civil rights. Stufling phone booths, once popular, was replaced by social work. All night parties of the past gave way to Teach-ins on Christian commitment or Viet Nam, which were equally lengthy. Collegians never change, or do they. One would expect more from this generation, however. Should not its exposure to the world have taught it by now that injustice, inequality and inhumanity are those things which make life most challenging? After all, a peaceful, Christian world would be a terribly dull one, or would it. Members of this generation of collegians are found at Siena, and here, as everywhere, they have created considerable turmoil. Neighborhoods were renewed, backward children tutored, self-help projects established, perhaps just one man discovered what it'means to be a person, separate and distinct from all others, and a community reacted violently. Because a hierarchy was asked to care, a college was asked to be silent. Instead, it shouted and its cry was CHANCE. It became a symbol of change, uncom- fortable and foreboding to people set in their ways, and these people resented it. They found a solution, however, for they attributed the turmoil to iiyoung, upstart kids? and thus, in their own minds, destroyed it, or did they. Siena wants n0 finer representatives than those iikidsf and the SAGA is proud to recall their year. A college yearbook is a means of recalling and reliving one's college days. To that end.it contains photographs of classmates and faculty; it records in pictures and text the highlights and events, the trials and triumphs of four undergraduate years. In the years to come the Saga will refresh your memories of that time when the blessings of youth and maturity mingled in your lives. While the Saga will serve admirably its purpose of translating the present into the future, it seems appropriate that I address my remarks to your future association with the College as alumni. It is of prime importance that you realize that as alumni you are still an integral part of Siena, in some ways of more consequence to it than yOu were as students. To borrow an analogy from industry: as students you were raw material; as alumni you are our finished product. The effectiveness of your education will be evaluated in terms of your achievement; Siena is judged on the performance of its graduates. Your education has been the mutual endeavor of yourselves and your College. That community of interest and purpose has forged bonds which should endure and find continued expression in participation in alumni activities. Active participation in the alumni will maintain and strengthen the associations of college years. A united and active alumni, moreover, will do much to enhance your College's reputation, a reputation that will redound on you. Siena was your college Choice. I hope that I may count on your loyalty to and support of the college of your choice. I assure you of a cordial welcome into the ranks of our alumni. May the Lord bless you and keep you. Early feel- ings of optimism were dashed when star Chuck Connolly decided to save his eligibility for the fall, and John McTague incurred an injury which put him out for the year. But despite these problems, the team did compile a 2-7 record, the best yet in the short history of the sport. The highlight of the season was the 27-28 win over New Paltz, the team,s hrst dual meet win. That meet also saw John Casey, who was a standout all season, grab his first collegiate win. Depth, as usual, proved Siena,s main problem, for only soph Brian Klim was able to back up Casey elfectively. Brightening the picture was the performance of the frosh squad, which chalked up a 4-3 mark, and won the NCC Championship. Joe McCoy won four races during the season, and was backed up strongly by Rick Bassette. Steve F itzpatrick finishes strongly for Siena. W ith hue teams competing, Siena soph Charlie Murphy ran of with medalist honors, shooting 78 under poor conditions. The teams as a whole, composed of four sophs, took second, for Sienahs best show in five years. Last spring, under the tutelage of Dr. Charles Connolly, the netmen produced their best record to date, 4-5, and this past fall took third in the MECAA Meet. Particularly impressive was the doubles team of W ayne Sheridan and Tony Deb- boli, which took second place. This spring the team expected to go over the .500 mark for the first time. Dirk VanDeCarr, who has been the top singles player for two years captained the team, which seemed 130 pos- sess line depth. Debboli did not lose a match last spring, and Sheridan, Brian F agan and Ken Malecki were also fine players. Tony Debboli smashes a forehand in the MECAA doubles tournament. THE COACH- Tom H annon lemma For the first time in twenty-two seasons, the I ndians opened without Dan Cunha at the helm. The new mentor was Tom Hannon, ex-St. Bonaventure basket- ball star. Having only four returning lettermen to work with, H annon had to deal with inexperience, and often started four so phomores. A s a result, the season, which might aptly' be termed a llbuilding year,,, was a losing one. Problems began right in the opening game with R.P.I., which had not beaten Siena since 1956. In- experience and lack of height led to a 73-68 defeat in this contest. Traditional rival State also took advan- tage of Siena weaknesses in the Armory game, and came away with a 73-71 win after a fierce battle. The Hannonmen suffered two more defeats, to Stonehill and Assumption on the road, before tasting victory, 96-72 against St. John F isher. The point total was a new high as was the second half total of 54 points. But this win, the opening game of the Christ- mas Tourney, set the stage for a bitter defeat. Holding a ten-point lead with Jive minutes left in the final against State, the Indians collapsed and were de- feated 91-88. The Indians picked up only one more win in the TH E CAPTAIN- M ark Palinski yirst semester, a 98-92 overtime conquest of Hunter. But after fading to a 2-9 record, the Indians rallied and played .500 ball the rest of the way. Harry Groom,s hot shooting 723 points in the second half for a new recordi paced the team to a 95-80 win over Utica, and after three straight MECAA defeats, the team rallied to upset K ings 81-69. Next team to be stunned was Cortland, conqueror of NCAA team LeMoyne. The 76-62 Siena win took everyone by surprise and gave notice of the future. For with no graduating seniors and a wealth of talent coming up from the frosh team, the Indians will be heard from next year. The season ended on a happy note when the team took their final home game, 76-68 from Clarkson, and topped St. John F isher in their final game of the campaign. Captain Mark Palinski paced the team both in scoring and rebounding, and set a new record for free throws made in one season. Joining him in double figures were Brian F arrell, Mike Long and Harry Groom. The other team scored occasionally too. In this game Jack set fresh records for most points in a half LBJ and field goals in a game UBj. Inci- dentally, he had 31 points. ?mslz Ensketmll The frosh basketball team this year was a very pleasant surprise. From a disappointing start, they came on strong and ended up breaking the school reeord for consecutive wins and grabbing the N ortheastern Collegiate Conference championship in a breeze. After dropping their first two games to R.P.I. and State, the fresh edged Adirondack by one point, then lost to Buffalo. But in their next game, they ramped over Albany Junior College, and they didn,t stop winning until they had broken the record of 12 consecutive wins and clinched the NCC title with another win over JCA, this one in overtime. But the main job of any fresh team is to develop players for the varsity, and Coach Gene Culnan has done this well. The fresh are best supplied in the front court, just where the varsity needs help. 64 Lee Smith is a complete ballplayer, the team,s leading scorer, a tine rebounder and ballhandler. 6'4 Jack Lynch has become a solid forward, with a deadly outside shot and good inside moves. And 67 Tom Sheridan has been improving every game. He has become more graceful and has learned to use his height to get points and re- bounds. Whafs more, he has discovered the art of shot-blocking, which could greatly aid the Siena defense. The fresh team also de- veloped several good guards. Angie Tarantino is a great shot; Bill Lamb has proved a tiger on defense; Jack Dolce showed himself to be a valuable sixth man on numerous occasions. 228 llereis what the huddle looks like from the out- side. In 1964, the team won its hrst varsity game, against Fairleigh Dickinson, and then went on to record a 4-3 slate. Last spring saw the stickmen encounter a much tougher schedule, including powers such as U. Mass. and Cortland, and still come up with a solid 5-3 mark. Hav- ing lost only three men from that squad, new Coach Russ F erris has a powerful nucleus and could improve on last year,s mark. Co-captain Tom, Reilly, who was one of the top scorers in the East last year, again headed a strong attack, and was joined this time by Dick Seeley, another excellent scorer. This meant even more goals for Siena, even though last 1 year was the team,s most productive scoring season. a The midheld possessed quality and quantity, both neces- sities. Co-eaptain Don Brutnell and Bob Oculato both started last year, and there were seven or eight other competent middies to aid them. The defense was strong as well, for goalie Tex Ritter returned for his third year in the nets. He had a competent backup man Fred Vollmer, who also ran with the middies. With several outstanding stars and plenty of depth, another fine season was in the Offering. wwmh WM Eager and impatient.the team prepares to go in. 254 As it turned out, things were really that bad. Siena opened its 1965 baseball campaign hoping to better its 6-8 reoord 0f the previous spring. Although the Indians managed only a disappointing 3-4 season, there were several promising prospects who indicated that the spring campaign would be much brighter. Soph third baseman Tom Dolan hit .421. Junior center helder Bernie Trembly batted .375, and senior right fielder Frank Pugliano hit .316. Besides these three ballplay- ers, Siena had a line roster of very capable Indians. The inheld of Chuck Thompson, Jerry W oitkowski, Jim Kessing, Jim Michaels and Tom Dolan appeared set both offensively and defensively. Promising sophomores hoped to gain an outfield berth from Trembly, Pugliano and A l Kutz. Pitching appeared to be the major question mark, but Paul Samatulski, Tom Lyons, Bob Flynn and Chuck N iles all flashed moments of excellence in the past, and Coach Tom Harmon expected them to put together a big year for the club. Talented and eager sophomores hoped to aid the club in the spring. Siena hopefully anticipated its spring competition. For the first time in many seasons the Loudonville nine appeared set at almost every position before the season began. A youthful coachw promising team. 239 -m Safmlll The 1965 1-114 season saw Mike Lynehas Jodators emerge as Campus Champions after a long season and a series of close football games. The I-M bracket quickly dissolved into a battle between the Jodators and Bill Sloarfs Crushers. The two teams fought it out three times, before the Jodators capped the hnal 13-12 in a controversial game. Then they squeeked through another one in the Campus Championship, edging Plassmann 4-8, the Dorm Champs, 20-19 in a nip and tuck struggle. Lynch headed the All-Star team and was joined by teammates Dick Seeley, Jim Falk and Tom, Reilly, while the Crushers also had their share of stars, with John Lonsky. George Lair, and Mike Dowd making the squad. In the Dorm League. Skip Egan of Ryan 2-E was MVP. His team won the Ryan Hall title, then bowed to Bill SehzvartzlouVS Plassmann champs in the final. This year, thirty-eight teams submitted rosters to Leo Callahan, the highest total in the schoolk history. Early season favorites were the Lukes, who had won the title each of the past three years. But their veteran squad was expected to receive stiff competi- tion from several sources, principally the Beaners, who had five members of last yeargs frosh team on their roster. Other strong teams were the Olympians, the Boys and the Bio Club. It looks as if there will be a jine season in store, and the eventual winner doubt- lessly will not go unscathed. The Varsity did not come this close frequently. Often a player will stop in the middle of a game and applaud a particularly good play. Interest is always high during the I-M season. Never far behind is the hawk-eyed ref. 243 244 -M Safmtzll With four varsity spring sports to occupy the spectatoris attention, I-M softball is often rele- gated to a minor role in Siena,s sports. Still, it attracts a large number of teams. Last spring saw the powerful Dialtegs repeat as champs, paced by MVP Ron Jaworski and Walt Mc- Dowell. Most of their team have graduated so the race should be wide open this year. The games give an opportunity to all those not engaged in varsity sports to test their ability. Everyone has a good time, except for the um- pires who usually manage to get themselves into trouble. But thafs not unusual, especially in S iena I-M sports! Palinski gracefully prepares to meet the ball in l-M Dorm championship game. The anxious split second before the players spring into action. Tom Kingsley stands helplessly by waiting for the throw from the outjfeld as another run scores. Palinski snags out a rally and just misses smwing nut Tom Kingsley too! 245 246 Let down the curtain 247 ...the farce is done? 250 Spatial Patrons F rancis G. Andre, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Stanislaus J.
