Acquario Comptroller, 1954-1964 1909-1964 65 SAINT BERNARDINE OF SIENA COLLE GE LOUD ONVILLE , NEW YORK OFFICE OF PRESIDENT Members of the Class of 1965: My sincere compliments to you on this fine edition of the Saga. It marks another milestone, recording as it does the history of the twenty-fifth class to graduate from Siena College. While the Saga will serve admirably its purpose of preserving the present for the future, it seems appropriate that I address my remarks to your future association with the College as alumni. It is of great importance that you realize that as alumni you still remain a very real part of Siena. Your education has been a mutual endeavor of yourselves and your College. That community of interest and purpose has developed close ties which should endure and find continued expression in alumni activities. Your participation in the programs and affairs of the Alumni Association will help it to achieve its aims, to become stronger, to serve Siena. more effectively. A united and active alumni will do muchfor you and your college. As alumni, too, you can be good will ambassadors for your College. You can speak up for it in your community. You can send qualified students here. You can help the College place its students in good jobs after graduation. You can help interest others to invest in the future of Siena. You can bring recognition and honor to the faculty and provide resources to further the educational program. Our graduates have made the name of Siena known and respected. We are confident that you will not only uphold but enhance that reputation in your lives and careers, individually and in concert with the alumni you are about to join. I wish to assure you of a cordial welcome into their ranks. May the Lord bless you and keep you. Sincerely yours, W. .7. gm ZgiaguDuffy, o. F. Z 67 68 SENIOR Ronald P. Jaworski Vice-President J. This yeafs Senate reached new heights in student government. The Mighty Fourteen set the pace with the institution of the Senate Aca- demic Committee, and with the llBarbedl, com- ments of its scribe. To add to their prestige, the Senate decided to sponsor Josh White and the Mandrell Sing- ers for the fall entertainment. Needless to say it lost scads of money. In order to counter this blow they turned to the Rock and Roll medium and found that Bo Diddley could lose even more money. Well, when all else failed, they turned to culture and wonder of wonders Hal Holbrock in IlMark Twain Tonight proved to be a great success, both financially and aesthetically. In all honesty we must praise this yearis Senate. They added the Student Directory, the Movie Committee tincluding I'Captain Videdj, and a review of the Athletic Department to their duties. The Senators initiated 21 Parents Weekend and, finally, they managed to make friends with the Student Senate of the College of Saint Rose. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! Baskets make the heart grow fonder. 151 Athletics 154 BasketBall It was a typical basketball season at Sienaegames were lost that should have been won, games were won that should have been lost. The Indians were nearly unbeatable in the friendly confines of Gibbons and inept on the road. Crowds were large and boisterous; Dan Cunha was brilliant. The low point of the year came early as Albany Statels Peds trounced the Indians 75-49 in the Armory. Then came the fiasco at Utica. The future looked bleak indeed. The Capital City Tournament followed, and revenge was never sweeter. Jack Mulvey dominated both boards, Soph Mark Palinski broke into the starting lineup with a bang, and the Indians downed State 50-48 on a last-second 35-foot jumper by Ed Marakovitz. The tourney saw Cunha at his best. He juggled players to make up for injuries, counteracted every attempt by Doc Sauers at both offense and defense, and in general directed the great upset. Mulvey was named Tourney MVP. The Cunhamen hit the road for losses at St. Francis in double OT, Kings and Williams, but in Gibbons Hall won their first overtime Victory in four years over Cortland State, and nearly upset powerful LeMoyne. Then Warren Issac led the Gaels of Iona into the home court. Before a packed house, Avella, Mulvey and Palinski led the Indians to a shocking 65-61 upset. Mulvey again domi- nated the boards and outclassed the All-American Issac. The sinking hopes of Siena fans rose again. The latest edition of the Siena Indians. Kneeling: Dan Hollis, Frank Cryan, JOhn Botticelli, Captain Rick Avella, Tom Amello and John Casey. Standing: Coach Dan Cunha, Ed Marakovitz, Bob Satkowski, Frank Ryan, Jack Mulvey, Fran Lichtenberger, Mark Palinski, Bob Milhizer and Athletic Director Fr. Paschal Monaghan. But the bugaboo of the road came up again and Pots- dam upset the Injuns. Assumption came into Gibbons Hall and the Indians tried to revenge last years 54-point loss, but emerged on the short end of an 82-73 score. Then Hartford came in and Mulvey broke the rebound record he had set against Cortland as the Indians won 79-65. St. Francis arrived and this time overwhelmed the In- dians by sheer height 71-55, and a trip to LeMoyne re- sulted in a 55-48 loss. Then came the final gameeSt. Peters at home. Mulvey upped the rebound record again-to 30-and Avella was never greater on defense. Palinski scored 28 for a taste of next year, and the Indians upset the bewildered Pea- cocks, 80-72. Disappointments, yes, but moments of glory as well. The Sophs showed promise for the future, with Palinski the second scorer on the club. Mulvey, named the teams Most Valuable Player by his teammates, went out in a blaze of glory, scoring over 20 in 3 of the last 4 and taking down 20 or more ribbies in each. He and Avella were the heart of the club. Cunhals defense was sharp again, allow- ing only 62.7 per game. The fact that the Injuns scored only 61.3 had much to do with the 9-10 record, not great but acceptable under the circumstances. Unfortunately, it looks like the Old Man will have to play with midgets again next yearebut with midgets like Palinski, Cryan and Amello, one can never tell. Coach Gene Culnan was forced to juggle the lineup time and again to find a winning combination. The Papooses showed a love to run and fast break, jump shoot and rebound, but demon- strated an early season dislike of defense. The Indians hit a mid-season peak with a rousing upset over unbeaten Albany Pharmacy and a win over Union. Jim Marlinski finally started to live up to his rave notices, then hit the academic pro list. Flashy guard Pat Cain, who led the break, went the same route to spoil the effect of these Wins. Steady guard Harry Groom, who shot, rebounded, played defense and ran the club, shows great promise for a career of stardom. He also had a 2.4 index. Juniors Paul Samatulski and John Botticelli and fireballing Soph Chuck Niles head a strong mound staff that has Bill Rosenberger in the bull pen. Sophs Jim Kessing and Jimmy Michaels form a strong keystone combination. The strength of the club is its power. In the past, Siena ballclubs have been plagued by a defense that tended to be leakier than the MetsC Cunha must look to Kessing and Michaels as well as returning Chuck Yanni to tighten up the infield. Last spring, a Sophomore-studded varsity achieved the first Winning season in Siena history. The Indians defeated Fairleigh- Dickinson, New England, Hamilton and Hartwick on the way to a 4-3 season. The only losses from this Club are co-captains Bob Mabry and Bob Baumann. The latter returns this year in the capacity of head coach to give Siena its first full-time varsity lacrosse coach. Returning attackmen Tom Reilly and Owen McDowell are joined by high-scoring Frosh star Ed McCarty. Reilly had a great Soph season which saw him second to Bau- mann in scoring. McCartys lefty stick and McDowell's great speed should give Siena a powerful scoring punch. The real strength of this years club should be at midfield where past Indian clubs were weakest. Baumann will be able to field three or four seasoned, tough, llmiddiell com- binations. Leading the aggregation will be hard-nosed Bob Oculato and big Jack Mulvey, who doubles as a scoring threat in the crease. Speedy Don Brutnell, a fine stick handler, will probably complete the first midfield. Bob Porcelli, Chuck Connolly, Pete Schreier, Bill Healeyeall Juniorseand Senior Pete OlConnell provide veteranK strength at this most grueling of all positions. New mentor Dr. Charles Connolly was able to manage a schedule of con- ditioning and practice for the young club. Con- nolly,s coaching, the emergence of John Casey as a fme runner, the return of son Chuck, and a good Ftosh squad brighten the future; but un- til the Doc can get three or four men to back up Casey and Connolly, the pattern of Siena cross- country will probably remain the same. am Captain Chuck Connolly kicks in for a strong third place finish in the MECAA meet at Siena.
