LOS yQ- RECUERDOS yQ Cj J a 3SSSS “V C_5 on Q VOLUME 16 WJ-.U1V1.Cj iU tr SIDNEY LANIER HIGH SCHOOL SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS C x(r Main Building View 2 Foreword A fascinating pastime for many persons is reading what is popularly called whodunits. These books carry the reader away from cares and responsibilities and give him an opportunity to leave behind — temporarily, at least — the humdrum existence of a word-a-day world. At the end, however, all the reader knows is that someone wrote a good yam. The characters are not real. The situations are seldom true to life. At Lanier we believe that reality is often more interesting than fiction. Inasmuch as everything at Lanier is open and aboveboard, there is no mystery about what goes on each day. We are not concerned with killers who stalk their victims and strike and strike again, but we are concerned with doing the work we are supposed to do and with such problems as going to a game and preparing for a test the next day. We like to know who did a good job in shop, who went to the Band Banquet and with whom, or who played end in the game with Edison. We believe that a pictorial record of the activities of normal, healthy boys and girls in their work and play is more interesting than the fictional record of one or more human beings gone haywire. We present in this book a record of who did what — whodunit — at Lanier this year View This old house has served its purpose; this old house will soon be gone. The building, originally used as a church, was a famil- iar sight just south of the auto mechanics shop. Later, when the property was bought to enlarge the school, it was used as a room for band practice. When, at long last, a new music room was started, this old house was moved to a temporary location to be used during the construction ct a new, modern build- ing. Band pupils have mixed feelings about the situation: pleasant anticipation of the new building and a hint of regret at the passing of the old. Mr. Sturchio and seme cf his proteges look into the future at the site cf the new band building. 4 Contents Administration 7 Classes 19 Calendar 60 Publications 63 Students at Work 69 Vocational 83 Music 99 ROTC 107 Advisories 117 Organizations 129 Athletics 155 Advertisements 171 5 Administration Administration L. Say, what goes on in the Attendance Of- fice? Antonia Avila checks tardy slips while Nieves Moreno and Alice Ortiz work on fed- erally connected students Miss Ofelia Me- dellin works on her six-weeks report. Library Could it be concentration? Maria Elena Martinez has a lot to study and one way to speed it up is by biting her tongue. Are they really working or pretending? Anyway, it looks natural to see Eddie Alfrido, Maria Elena Alonzo, Gloria Alvarado, and Reynaldo Anguiano in deep thought. 10 Administration Principal's Message A school building may be erected, but it takes students to make a school. The energy, the am- bition, and the cooperative spirit of the students of Lanier help make it a good school. Together with the faculty, I enjoy working with the boys and girls who have a serious purpose in life and can be happy at the same time. I appre- ciate the confidence that the students have in us. May we, the principal and pupils, continue to be proud of each other. 11 Administration Josephine Garcia, our Records Clerk, admires orchestra trophy. Is it the freshman year, when one is just moving from a junior school to a highschool, when one feels quite childish one minute and grown up the next, when one meets one bewildering situation after another. Or is it the sophomore class, with the first feeling of really belonging in a high school, and therealization of the need to study to ac- quire a good educational foundation and to prepare for further study. Some believe the junior class is best, with its plans for social activities, its warm friend- ships, and the feeling of being almost there at the goal one has tried so hard to reach. Could it be the senior year, with the feeling that one of life's major milistones will soon be reached; that soon one must decide whether he will continue his education or put on one of Uncle Sam's uniforms or go to work, that there is a great deal of fun in the form of parties, dances and the final thrill of walking across the stage to receive from a smiling Board member a piece of paper stating that the recipient that is graduating from high school is beginning to have responsibilities of his own. Which class is most interesting? Could it be that each is most interesting at that time? Anyway, here are the four classes of the school year 1954-1955, typical groups of typical pupils. 18 Classes 19 Snaps The Senior Class recording secretary. Manuela Quiroga and corresponding secretary, Lydia Charles, work to- gether on one of their many jobs Jovita Moreno, displays clothes that were made by the voca- tionaldress- making class for the orphans. Beatrice Armendariz admires the doll dressed by Mrs. George Flores. She's the motherofEdward Flores, our Drum Major. Mr. Brewer feels proud of George Rodriguez as he ac- cepts plaque from Mr. Leroy Hicks, President of thelCiwan- is Club. George was awarded the Kiwanis International plaque for the best essay on democracy. Monday is the best day of the week for Seniors because it is the day they go to Family Life Education. Margie Martinez is inteviewed by Mrs. Wallace, the teacher of the class. 20 Class Officers Top — Carmelo Rivas, president; Marcelo Aguilar, vice-president. These former students have been welcomed back to school and lit easily into the daily routine. They add dignity and sincerity to a youthful atmosphere. At the time pictures were taken for the year- book only ten veterans were enrolled. Late comers, together with their former branch of Service, are listed here: Guadalupe Duarte, Army Jesus A. Farias. Army Henry Galan, Marine James Garcia. Mrs. Nina Braunig lends a hand in sterilizing room as Bernard Vasquez, Ignacio Olivarri. and Tom Villegas hurry through a tremendous job. Students find opportunities to do school service by working in the cafeteria. Ignacio Olivarri chats (hastily) with checkers Rachel Mar- tinez, Lupe Alvarez, and Cecelia Ortiz as he passes through the line. 32 Junior Class Officers President.............. Students at Work Students at Work If an agent were sent to make a report on what goes on at Lanier, his report could be somewhat like this: The Place — Lanier High School. The Job — To let you know where Lanier students go between the hours of 8:20 and 3:25. The Clues — Good grades, high standard in moral character, improvement all over school, and better citizens. Discoveries — Most of the 1838 students at- tending Lanier were studying different courses. Such subjects were English, Spanish, world history, and similar others for academ- ic students, while classes in bookkeeping, typing, shorthand, and math were attended by commercial students. Vocational students were active in different shops. Evidence — See the pages that follow. 68 Students at Work Mechanical Drawing Robert Diaz de Leon works on a poster in mechanical drawing class. Robert intended to post, but he had an opportunity to use his skill in drawing on a job. Craftsmen use drawings as a guide for their work. A student in mechanical drawing is taught to read and understand plans and to make his own drawings. Inventions, manufac- turing, and engineering, all of vital importance to our civilization, depend largely upon draw- ings. Boys who wish to play their part in the devel- opment of our country would do well to spend one or more semesters in a mechanical drawing class. Lanier of- fers opportunities ior students inter- ested in science to get a foundation for further study. All pupils in 8B take junior science. General science is offered to Sth grad- ers. In high school a pupil has op- portunities to take biology, physiolo- gy, chemistry end physics. Science Tony Hernandez and Oscar Elizalde examine specimen bones while in science class. Science Classes F.cbeit Cruz prepares dilute sulfuric ccid to be used )n piepcring hydrogen. Art Basket weaving in craits class can be fascinating. Joe Sanchez (standing, leit), Carmen Hernandez, fohnny Hernandez (seated) seem to enjoy it very much. Art and Crafts Classes A class in art offers high school students opportunities in the field of fashion, still life drawing.poster and commercial design. Advanced students may do oil painting and air brush design. In crafts class design, basketry, weaving, wood carving and leather tooling meet the children's needs and interests and prove popular. Students have won art awards in many out-of-school contests. During Open House we found Eddie Garza demonstrating his talent in the Art Department by doing a portrait of Carmen Martinez, a member of his class. 72 Art Pastel Drawing Left group — Arlene Fisher, Matilde Alvarado, Anita Right group — Magdalena Rodriguez. Civics classes offer opportunities for both, each of great importance in a democratic country. Frequent panel discussions serve as a means of gaining and giving information and serve as inspiration to further study. Geometry also fills an important need. Science and mathematics go hand in hand. Alert students take advantage of opportunities offered. Civics and Geometry Adela Sanchez (standing) asks question on segregation Orfelinda Guerra. If you want the best, why don't you take it to a shop that employs boys trained in the Sidney Lanier auto mechanics shop? Yes, students have excellent opportunities to learn a trade by working in the shops we have in school. In every shop we have good instructors that help us in understanding and learning the trade we choose to take up. The students get their experience through actually working on cars, cameras, presses, or whatever it is they are studying. And who profits by taking vocational train- ing? Practically every school student is eli- gible to take any shop he wishes. 82 Vocational 83 Vocational Auto Mechanics Shop Instructor . . . . President . . . . Vice-president . You guessed it. The Lanier High School Band. This organization provides music not only for school activities but also for out- side events, such as parades, band festivals, and concerts. And the leader of this group? Mr. Alfred Sturchio, a capable, energetic young man who is so enthusiastic that band members are unhappy when they do not have extra practice. What is the source of that warbling sound we hear that comes from the auditorium at the third period? Another group that deserves much credit for providing music at seriou assemblies, baccalaureate services, and dif- ferent civic affairs is the girls chorus under the direction of Mrs. Veronika Kuest. It is really a treat to hear these girls sing in English, Spanish, and German! 98 Left — The drum major, Edward Flores, is ready to lead off fcr the review for the Spring Festival. Right-facel Forward---Marchl What's all this that we hear early in the morn- ing? It's the ROTC drill team marching, counting cadence, all neatly in step, practic- ing for the city drill team competition. Annual parades always feature the different schools. The ROTC also has a chance to review on the school parade grounds during color day, open house, and other activities. The cadets take turn in raising and lowering the flag every day, a job which has been faithfully done throughout the years. Captain PhilipC. Hendrix, M Sgt. Frederick A. Rose, and Sfc. Leonard T. Sorge, as well as other instructors before them, have taught the boys army tactics, first aid, drilling, marksmanship, and other such knowledge that is important to a young man in these times. They are also responsible for the trim look and know-how of these 300 lads who have earned a place among the finest ROTC corps in the city, a position of of which we are proud. 106 ROTC Sidney Lanier Reserve Officers Training Corps Regimental Stall Robert Palomo Cadet Colonel Eddie Gonzales Carlos Campos Bias Herrera Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Cadet Major Cadet Captain 108 ROTC Company A Front Row—Eddie Hernandez, Alfred Sanchez, Baldemar Jimenez, Manuel Garcia, Caleb Vcsquez, Rcbert Diaz De Leon. The only way a drill team may win this trophy is by winning the Drill Team Com- petition for two consecutive years. Lanier won in 1953 and in 1954. Every Lanier student re- spects it's famed drill team and feels very proud of being a part of the organization that sur- rounds it. For their extra efforts they put forth in coming to school early, staying late, giving up holidays and Saturdays to improve their drilling, our drill team members get a well deserved hand from Los Recuerdos end Lanier students. The ROTC Commandant, Captain Hendrix, and the Prill Team Commanders, Cadet Colonel Robert Palomo and Cadet Captain lesse Contreras, admire the Bettencourt trophy, of which every student feels proud. 113 ROTC The Lanier Rifle Team is one of the organizations of the ROTC Corps These boys enter matches and always make a good showing. ROTC The ROTC Cadets traded in their ties for blue neck scarfs. Joe Trevino is shown here with the neck scarf and Santcs de la Pena with the tie. Don t they look handsomer with neck scarfs, as well as more comfort, able? Advisories Advisories Although students change classes every semester, there is one period they never change. We have several clues to follow: First, all students attend that period in the morning and at noon. Second clue is that most students are proud of that period. What could it be? Of course, the advisory period. In the morning students go to their respec- tive advisories for roll call and announce- ments. At noon, some play games while others study, discuss programs with their adviser, or have panel discussions. Now we know who dunit, for behind this advisory organization are the advisers, who serve, not only as teacher but also as help- ers, in forming the social unity of Lanier. 116 Advisories 117 Advisories Advisories The high school section of Lanier has grown considerably in the past few years. The in- creased enrollment at the beginning of the sec- ond semester made it necessary to organiie three new advisory groups. These new groups, formed to absorb the Jan- uary 9A promotions, are made up almost en- tirely of lOB's. The few exceptions are transfers from other schools. Teachers charged with the direction of these new groups are Mrs. Donna Craighead, Mrs. Alice Dominguez, and Mr. Joe Gutierrez. Andrews Advisory Fro.it Row—Emilia Jimenez, Daniel H. What adds the spice to everyday work? Well, there are clubs which students may join, net only ser- vice clubs, which are the clubs that help our school be a better school, but social clubs as well. A student may choose any of the six social clubs. They are the Platonians, Royal Blue Collegiates, Sparklers, Symphonians, Trojans, and Utopians. Anyone worrying about shrieks that come from clubrooms may rest assured that nothing more serious than initiation of new members is going on-and what initia- tions! Any loud argument could possibly be an attempt to choose between There Goes My N Heart and Sincerely for the song to sing at assembly. 'U To help the school run smoothly, there are service clubs, such as Avido Club, which handles the visual aid faciliities in classes, and the Library Club, which aids the librarian in circulating books. Somewhat similiar in nature to our service clubs is the Press Club, which stimulates interest in the field of publicutions. Qualifica- tions for membership is that students be on the school paper or yearbook staff or in the photo or print shop. In these clubs students give up some of their time to helpout in their particu- lar line to promote our school's fine record in citizenship. 128 Organizations PTA PTA officers check advisory membership lisl Mrs. M. Is it the sport or the desire to gain popularity? Although the boys enjoy the sports in which they engage, it's the spirit of loyalty to their school which makes these boys want to serve on the teams. With the entire school backing them up, the boys try their best and make a good showing of skill and sportsmanship auring the season. Win or lose, they keep on trying. There's a lot of hard work to be done in get- ting out a school yearbook, but there is also much pleasure attached to the job. The yearly convention of student journalists at Denton each December is a highlight of the school year, an experience to be long remembered. To break the monotony of long hours of even- ing and Saturday or holiday work, and to gain strengh for more labor, the staff frequently takes time out to go to Miss Carson's lab to prepare and eat a meal. Everybody takes his turn at dishwashing, even the photographer. Enjoying a good meal between periods of working on the Yearbook one Saturday, we find this grcup — Adela Sanchez. Eloise San Miguel.
