Some of them are pre-sale of tickets before each foot- ball and basketball game, setting up of the fire-drill schedule, and the sponsor- ing of a Better Citizenship Campaignf' The two main projects are the hiring of outside talent for assembly programs and the printing of the handbook. So that each student can feel that he has a part in the Student Council projects, the council asks for a pledge to help finance their activities. Y-Teens has long been one of Sidney High's more inspira- tional organizations, as it strives to provide spiritual and inspirational guid- ance for its members. along with social enjoyment. Money-making projects are sponsored throughout the year, the more important being the sale of refreshments at the home football games and the annual selling of Yellow jacket pencils. The Y-Teen year concludes with the spring banquet, but the Y-Winter Formal is the actual peak ofthe season's activities. Y-Teen spirit, pep and go. These words from the Y-Teen pep song char- acterize the clulfs oflicers and adviser. The senior Hi-Y, composed exclusively of boys from grades ten to twelve, is one of the most active of boys clubs in Sidney High School. It is a Christian organization which raises money by selling programs at the Football games and sponsoring a con- cession stand at all the basketball games. The highlight of the year is the fabulous Hi-Y-Y-Teen winter formal, second only to the Prom. Hi-Y heads planning for the future. Junior Hi-Y is the boys' organization for promoting Christian leadership. Twice a month they may be found at their meetings. which always open with a devotional period. These active boys and their adviser, Mr. Fogt, must expel their energy in some way, so it is not unusual to see them at their annual picnics, on swimming parties, or participating in gym night. This club offers a variety of sports includ- ing pingpong, volleyball, tennis, basketball and archery. A minimum of ten points must be earned before a girl is eligible to join the or- ganization. Besides being a sports organization, GAA sponsors social affairs. These are the GAA dance, Exhibition Night, and an after-game dance. Initiation is held for new members in the spring. The Science Club provides an outlet for students who want to go further in experiments in chemistry, physics, and biology. The programs feature various projects involving balloons and discussions on everything from the amoeba to the velocity of light. The most important event in which the Science Club participates is the Dis- trict Science Fair held annually at Wittenberg College. For this event all members are required to prepare pro- jects. 'llhese projects vary from compo- sitions on rocketry to demonstrations in chemistry and biology. The members benefit greatly from this event. Besides receiving certificates and rib- bons, those who make a superior rating are able to attend the state contest held in Akron. I -u-L, Nlad scientists? Each year the local club sponsors two delegates to the state capital, who tour the state senate and other state ofhees. The VIC annually sponsors a roller skating party and an after-game dance. Another money-making project is the selling of hot dogs at the home basket- ball games. As a sports project the club entered a team in the noon intramural basketball tournament. The Sidney High School News. a weekly feature in the Sidney Daily News, is composed by the students themselves, with the aid of Albaugh's Market Bunny's Drug Store Mrs. Blust. This experience trains the student so that he will be able to participate on the annual staff in his senior year. Each journalism student works to become eligible for Quill and Scroll. Students can be admitted when they become juniors, and they then join with the other members to carry out the goal of the society by promoting better journalism. Un September 12 Sidney traveled to Shawnee and completely scalped the Redskins 32-14 as Bill Bynum ran for three touchdowns. In the Belle- fontaine contest Sidney easily defeated the Chief- tains 33-8. The next week, September 26, the Grecnwaves hosted the Jackets and took the contest 16-6 from the favored Jackets. The'Yellow Jackets then lost their next four outings. The scores were Fairborn 20, Sidney 143 Troy 30, Sidney 03 Miamisburg 38. Sidney Og and Fairmont 44, Sidney 8. On October 31 the Jackets traveled to Piqua and stunned the Indians 12-6. Don Bolin scored Sidneyis two touchdowns. In the scason's finale, Sidney lost to the Xenia Buccaneers by the score of 38-12. The Yellow Jackets had many fine players dur- ing the season and will be hurt by graduation since they will lose 13 seniors. Henry Fonde, from the Lvniversity of Michigan, was the guest speaker. Mr. Fonde told the players and guests what- ever you do, do it to the best of your ability. The winner of the Blom Collinsi' trophy for sportsmanship was Harry Faulkner. Bill Bynum received the Dick Flanagan trophy for the Host Valuable Player. There were many close and heartbreaking games. ln the first game Belle fontaine dropped Sidney 82-64. Sidney than lost to Delphos. St. Marys, Covington, lima Shawnee, V-vapakoneta, and the first game to Piqua in the holiday' tourna- ment. Sidney finally got on the winning trail by whalloping Tipp City 58-29. In their first MVI. game Greenville defeated Sidney. Sidney then defeated Fairborn 53-52. The Jackets lost to Troy 69-60. Sidney then defeated Miamisburg 48-39 and Celina 68-39. Sidney lost their three games to Fairborn 61-57, Piqua 61-55, and Xenia 88-45. Sidney ended the season with a win against Tecumseh 65-52. This gave the basketball team a 2-5 record in league play. Tennis Team Eyes Coming Season The tennis team, coached by Mr. W'hite, is looking forward to another successful season in 1960. Last year the team finished with a 13-0 record. Although Mr. Wihite will lose three seniors, Don Bolin, Jim Friend and Don Lat- imer, by graduation the team has excellent prospects in Roger Garnersfelder, Ray Wood- rulf, Dave Billings, and Gordon McDermott. Don Bolin, the current MVL singles champion, is likely to repeat as champion in 1959. Sidney lost the MVL doubles championship last year for the first time in five years, being defeated by Troy. Sidney made a very good showing in the dis- trict. Don Bolin came in third and went to the state tournament.
