Class- room work, corridor fun, organi- zation activity, and sports conflicts are pictured here. Our magic mir- ror shows a busy group of students hurrying to classes and clubs, con- tending on the field or court, or cheering wildly from the sidelines. It reflects faculty and administra- tion working to train able and well-adiusted young men and women. This is the year of Shet- land sweaters, the lvy League look, saddle shoes, the Chicken , motorcycles, Sputnik, pizza pie, Johnny Mathis, and ice hockey. This year, thanks to the building of a new iunior high school, the nine hundred and ninety-eight stu- dents enrolled at Sidney High are able to pursue their studies and activities in surroundings less crowded than in recent years. 9-3' e5ed,,W.,J,w' ' gi-J... This promise is fulfilled in many ways throughout the year as speech tournaments, assemblies, and various programs are pre- sented. Annual events in Masque and Gavel are the selling of Christmas corsages and a spring bake sale. Its purpose is high, that's why it's Masque and Gavel. M 8. Speech Experience Never Loses Value With their key NFL officers unlock the powers of expression and personality. They are iseatedi Hazel Hahn, secretary, Lu Ann Luckey, president, istandingl Nancy White, vice-president, Miss Owens, adviser, and Judy Clayton, treasurer. Speech tournaments are big events in the lives of NFL members. Each year, students gain entry into this national organization by the points made at the various contests. A student must obtain twenty-five points for member- ship. He then receives a degree of merit, and continues working for higher degrees, which include honor, ex- cellence, and distinction. This club works along with Masque and Gavel in an effort to promote better speech in the high school and the community. Although Sidney has had a chapter of the National Forensic League for only four years, much has already been done to benefit good speech. 'Blooll, Sureat, And Tears' Go Into Annual Perhaps some of the busiest seniors around Sidney High are those who work diligently on the annual staff. They, along with Mrs. Blust, the ad- viser, start in the summer to plan for the best annual ever. After school you may see members of the advertising staff trying frantic- ally to sell ads for the Yellow Jacket. The editors and copy-editors meet every day, fifth period, making the dummy, writing clever heads and cap- tions, and interesting copy. The pho- tographers take pictures and others mount them and type copy. All this takes much time and patience. The business manager takes care of the financial matters. The official selling squadron is the circulation staff. They go to the home- rooms to persuade the students to buy the annual. FREYTAG What shall we say? The blare of trumpets and the boom of drums are heard through- out the school at intervals all during the scliool year as the band practices for its performances. In the fall it plays at football games and presents a number of precision drills and formations. Many hours of work go into the presentation of a five minute show. Mr. Clark, director, plans the show. Then during the football season the group practices three nights a week in addition to their regular school period. During the winter the band moves inside to practice for the Band and Orchestra Concert which is held in March. March from Love of Three Oranges by Prokofuff, Hollywood Serenade by Davis, Calypso Joint by Farrell, and Trumpet Boogie were numbers presented by the band at this concert. This is our senior orchestra under the direction of Paul Fitzwater in full swing, practicing on various selections to improve their technique. The outstanding talent of the group has been well developed through consistent rehearsals. This enthusi- astic stress on music has brought rewarding results. The main event of the year was the annual winter f concert held March 14. The audience was thrilled by such pieces as Rosamunde Overture, Minuet from the llth Symphony, Largo, Ballet Parisian, Waltz of the Flowers from the Nutcracker Suite, and the familiar tunes, Deep Purple and Tempta- tion. The orchestra also provides the music for assem- blies, class plays, and baccalaureate and commence- ment exercises. lt truly forms an active and vital part of the busy life at Sidney High. .A fr if 4 l l l 2 Q ROSS PATTERN 8. They showed much ability in music, sports, and scholastic subiects. Among their many activities this year, the iuniors had two new expe- riences. One was the presentation of the class play, State Fair. This was given on November T4 and T5 and proceeds received from tickets ti- nanced the Junior-Senior Prom which was their second new experience. The Prom, sponsored by the class ot '59, was held on May l6. This was one of the big events of the year for the iuniors. Student council members were Harry Faulkner, Beverly Monroe, and Philip Valentine. Just a friendly chat. The Junior class officers gather to discuss the coming events of the year. They were Rebecca Sidle, secretory, Jim Friend, president, Judy Clayton, vice-president, and Kenneth McElroy, treasurer Q A l J' i T A1i:.X wit - . . ,LL 3:11 th 'J : fig, 1 . 3. eat . - 1v ',3'i'!i 4,, 4 1. , ' 1 i I , ,J - wr-..' ,,, 4- Q. The sophomores are a promising group scholastically with many honor students. They are eagerly planning for the future. Many of them participate in musical organi- zations, using their talents in band, orches- tra, glee clubs, and ensembles. Both boys and girls show their abilities in sports. Their extraecurricular activities include membership in Y-Teens, Hi-Y, Inter Nos, and Masque and Gavel. Besides all these the biggest and most memorable social event was the Sophomore Party. The Class of l96l has at last reached the high plateau-they are in high school! Even though they are underclassmen, they have made a grand entrance into high school life. For the first time they are per- mitted to loin in with some of the Senior High activities such as Jr. Hi-Y, GAA, and Jr. Y-Teens. Many of the students place high on the honor roll and some of them had the opportunity of attending Miami to take the scholarship tests. They will never forget the thrill and ex- citement of the Freshman Party. They danced to the music with stars in their eyes. The magic mirror will reflect all these memorable times in the future. The book says that the world is round. The freshman class officers are iusl finding that life at SHS also goes round and round. They are Jack Wilson, treasurer, Sharon DeWeese, secretary, Kathryn Heckler, president, and fstandingl Nancy Wells, vice-president. F reslunen Ilvgin To Solvct Coursvs Q37 -N .
