Clubs Help Us Prepare For F uturv VIC fVocational Industrial Clubl was first organized in 1951. One objective of the club is to work for an award for which standards have been set by the state organization. One of the most important events is the trip the boys make to Columbus to tour the State Government offices. This is a thrilling experi- ence for them because they can learn the opera- tion of the government first hand. They also send delegates to spring and fall conventions in Columbus. Other events include trips to two local in- dustries and a trip to one out-of-city industry. This year they visited Avon Manufacturing Com- pany and Citizens National Bank in Sidney, and Aero Products Corporation in Vandalia. The FFA is a national organization com- posed of boys taking vocational agriculture and having local school chapters. The main pur- poses of the group are to promote brotherhood, to honor rural opportunities and responsibilities, and to develop competent, rural leadership. Our SHS chapter has a very wide variety of activities. Parliamentary procedure and chapter business procedure are practiced at meetings. The boys attend officers' training schools, state conventions, and State FFA camp. On the home front they exhibit at the Shelby County Fair, conduct scrap drives, take part in district and state judging contests, and have various recrea- tional and social activities. The FFA boys are always busy with some activity which prepares them for the future. Tennis Shoe Gals re Busy An association for all girls with spe- cial aptitudes at sports is the GAA, spon- sored by Miss Gannon, director of physical education for girls. Any girl is eligible aft- er earning the required ten points necessary for induction. Numerals may be earned, as well as medals and letters, for active partici- pation on teams or for services rendered to the organization. The Girls Athletic Association offers a variety of sports with teams ready for com- petitiong it also provides other physical training. Among the most popular games are tennis, softball, volleyball, basketball, and archery. The sports vary with the sea- sons as can be expected, and interest grows and goes as the months pass. The large membership proves the popularity of this organization. Two outstanding events highlighted the year's activities: Exhibition Play-Night and the GAA dance. GO FLY A BIG BALLOON . . . The officers of the Science club are sending up a weather balloon. Mr. Kauffman. the adviser. looks on with Sandy Hance, secretary. while Hugh Turley, treasurer, Marion Warren, president, and Terry Katterhenry, vice president release the balloon. The Science Club provides an outle for students who like to go a little fur ther than their classroom experiments ir chemistry, physics, and biology. Fact and figures on the slide rule, variou: projects involving balloons, and demon- strations on everything from soup tt nuts make up their meetings. Noon movies, shown on Tuesday Wfednesday, and Thursday of each week of the winter months, relieve the con- gestion in the halls and provide a little capital for the treasury. A The members have access to the chemistry laboratory, biology equip- ment, and physics apparatus, and there is hardly any limit to the extent of theii opportunities. Reading books sometimes becomes boring, so there are plenty ol chances to learn by doing. They have sent up several small weather balloons in the past year, and at the height of the program sent up a six foot balloon. The farthest point ever reached by one of these balloons was eastern Pennsylvania. t.lC?lllfi1fif2-JS P101 Projects ln the last few years the audio-visual department of our school has advanced greatly. The purpose of the department is to show movies in classes to instruct students. Movies picture graphical experiments and are a fast and easy method of teaching. Boys who are in the Science Club or are mechanically inclined are usually the ones who take partg however, the department is open to anyone wishing to participate. Students can learn the operation of several projectors, the splicing and care of film, and various other jobs which are in- cluded in the activity. The equipment of the department in- cludes two l6mm sound projectors, two slide and film strip projectors, one opaque projector, a tape recorder, various screens, and splicing equipment. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION . . . The student projectionists go over the films with their adviser Mr. Kauffman.
