If the wish came true and you were in our shoes, you would have many wonderful experiences in store for you. The first few days in Sidney High are filled with hesitant, unsure footsteps. Through the next six years the self-confidence and wisdom gained steady the footsteps and they ring loud and clear down the halls. If you were in our shoes, you would attend the football games cheering for the SHS Yellow jackets, burst with pride at the sight of our all- boy band, and perhaps attend the dances held after the games. You might hear our talented vocal groups at their annual concert, enjoy fine dramatic readings of the speech department members, laugh with the crowd at class plays, or scurry around with our news hounds in search of scoops. And, of course, you would Footprints on the sands of time are never made sitting down. 5 burn the midnight oil in a variety of subjects from Latin to agriculture, algebra to shorthand preparing for exams and scholarship tests. Yes, if you were in our shoes, you would meet some of the greatest students and teachers in school and you would feel with the seniors the reluctance to leave it all on the night of commencement. NOT THE FARMERS IN THE DELL. BUT Gary Baker Roger Shoffner and Edward Lyons members of the Ag Department. These boys are working on their summer project Learn It f Doing Practice makes perfect! The agriculture and business departments prove this by turning out top-notch farmers and secretaries. While the Ag boys plow their fields and learn soil conservation, the future secretaries are studying dictation, the operation of machines, and office conduct. The Ag Department carries on projects throughout the year. The boys raise dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, poultry, and hogs. They raise corn, wheat, oats, and soy beans. They learn about the general maintenance of farms, and the operation of farm machinery. The boys partici- pate in the state and district contests in livestock and crop judging and also machinery practices. In the business department the girls learn to write business letters and improve the speed of their typing and shorthand. Sidney High has numerous machines which the girls learn to run. Good business etiquette is taught. Both the guys and gals at SHS are kept busy just learning the do's and don't's of their professions. The seniors under the able leadership of Glenn Apple and the guidance of Miss Owens, the spon- sor, carried on the election according to the rules set up by the State Election Board. Polls were set up in the girls' gym, the li- brary, and two in the boys' gym. Official booths, ballot boxes, and sample ballots were used. The students voted on national, state, and local of- ficers, also the school bond issue, and the com- bining of the common pleas and the probate courts. This voting was an excellent experience for the students since they will be the future voters of America. Most of this year's seniors will be of voting age when the next Presidential elec- tion takes place. 11 MISS OLIVE OWENS ASSISTS GLENN APPLE in making the ar- rangements for the mock election. One of the biggest events in the lives of the juniors and seniors is the junior-Senior Prom. Sometimes this even proves to be the saddest night of the year for the seniors who are attending their last big dance at Sidney High School. Most of them, however, leave with the hope that they have done their best to make their days and the days of the underclassmen the happiest ever spent in high school. Last year the students really danced in a mirage when they whirled to the music of the Keynotes at The Blue Mirage. Bob Zimpher and Marcia Whitman reigned as the King and Queen of the 1956 prom, and they were escorted to their places at the throne by Sarah Friend and james Wells. During the intermission while the refresh- ments were being served, the junior girls' trio composed of Mary Ann Given, Diane Blake, and Nancy Clark sang several selections. The enter- tainment committee presented a short skit, which they had written, portraying the future lives of some of the seniors. Council and Patrol Always Be Courteous, Consider- ate, C0-operative, Calm, Cheerful were the ABC's suggested by the Stu- dent Council during the annual cam- paign for better citizenship. The theme for the campaign was Be a Credit to Your School. The courtesy campaign is just one of the many projects that the Council sponsors. Others are the pre- sale of football and basketball tick- ets, honor roll Computation, fire drills, locker clean-ups, and the one-way traffic plan. The two biggest projects of the Council are the publishing of the Student Handbook and the hiring of professional talent for assembly pro- grams. The special programs pre- sented in 1956-1957 were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ackerman, experts on Central Latin America, Tade Sztukag a Polish-American tenor presenting music from the Gay Nineties to Broadway , the Faculty String Quar- tet from Capital Universityg a group of students from the Ohio State School for the Blindg the Miami University Glee Club: and Jeff Hayes, cartoon- ISI. The Safety Patrol boys lead busy lives trying to keep our potential traffic criminals in tow. Whether rain or shine, sleet or snow, they can always be found on the job braving the weather to fur- ther the cause of safety. This year the patrol has made an all-out effort for improvement - at- tempting to increase the authority of its members and to attract more mem- bers into the organization. At meetings attended by city traffic and safety offi- cials plans were made to extend the to drivers. jurisdiction of patrolmen Anyone recklessly operating a car could be reported by a patrol member to Mr. Brown, who in turn notified the police department. THE Y-TEENS raise money by selling pop- corn and potato chips to hungry spectators at home football games. In service to various or- ganizations in Sidney, they sell poppies and ban- gles on Saturdays to raise money for worthy causes. At Thanksgiving and Christmas they help needy families. The club, composed of second- year Latin students, is sponsored by Miss Emma Pfeifer. Its purpose is furthering the knowledge of Latin outside of class. On a night in March members turned time back to the days of ancient Rome. The evening was spent in dining and entertainment similar to the way of Romans. This project is financed by the sale of doughnuts the second and fourth Thursdays of each month after school. Another way of learning more about Latin was the Roman Games, a picnic, which was held at Roadside. Members participated in wrestling, boxing, and other Roman sports. The club meets every third Thursday, then they show slides, hear reports on Roman life and customs, give plays, and enjoy various other pro- grams. It is also the custom for the outgoing mem- bers to leave something to benefit the club. In the past years a projector, slides, and books have been left as memorials. ROME SHALL RISE AGAIN . . . One objective of the club is to work for an award for which standards have been set by the state organization. One of the most important events is the trip the boys make to Columbus to tour the State Government offices. This is a thrilling experi- ence for them because they can learn the opera- tion of the government first hand. They also send delegates to spring and fall conventions in Columbus. Other events include trips to two local in- dustries and a trip to one out-of-city industry. This year they visited Avon Manufacturing Com- pany and Citizens National Bank in Sidney, and Aero Products Corporation in Vandalia. The FFA is a national organization com- posed of boys taking vocational agriculture and having local school chapters. The main pur- poses of the group are to promote brotherhood, to honor rural opportunities and responsibilities, and to develop competent, rural leadership. Our SHS chapter has a very wide variety of activities. Parliamentary procedure and chapter business procedure are practiced at meetings. The boys attend officers' training schools, state conventions, and State FFA camp. On the home front they exhibit at the Shelby County Fair, conduct scrap drives, take part in district and state judging contests, and have various recrea- tional and social activities. The Science Club provides an outle for students who like to go a little fur ther than their classroom experiments ir chemistry, physics, and biology. Fact and figures on the slide rule, variou: projects involving balloons, and demon- strations on everything from soup tt nuts make up their meetings. Noon movies, shown on Tuesday Wfednesday, and Thursday of each week of the winter months, relieve the con- gestion in the halls and provide a little capital for the treasury. A The members have access to the chemistry laboratory, biology equip- ment, and physics apparatus, and there is hardly any limit to the extent of theii opportunities. Reading books sometimes becomes boring, so there are plenty ol chances to learn by doing. They have sent up several small weather balloons in the past year, and at the height of the program sent up a six foot balloon. The farthest point ever reached by one of these balloons was eastern Pennsylvania. t.lC?lllfi1fif2-JS P101 Projects ln the last few years the audio-visual department of our school has advanced greatly. The purpose of the department is to show movies in classes to instruct students. Movies picture graphical experiments and are a fast and easy method of teaching. Boys who are in the Science Club or are mechanically inclined are usually the ones who take partg however, the department is open to anyone wishing to participate. Students can learn the operation of several projectors, the splicing and care of film, and various other jobs which are in- cluded in the activity. The equipment of the department in- cludes two l6mm sound projectors, two slide and film strip projectors, one opaque projector, a tape recorder, various screens, and splicing equipment. So resolved members of our circulation and advertising staffs as they set out in hot pursuit of their goals. Visiting local merchants, industries, and business establishments, the advertising crew sold ads in our book. Contracts were obtained designating the space desired by each advertiser and were kept on file. Un- der the able supervision of advertising man- ager, Todd Bassett, the five-member staff accomplished a great deal toward bolster- ing our revenue. Any Tuesday or Thursday noon last fall members of the circulation staff could be seen charging from room to room. Equipped with contracts, receipt books, and lists of homeroom students, they sold annuals to anyone who would agree. As the money started pouring in, circulation manager, jerry McCoy, and his assistant, Nancy Rose, were mired in stacks of con- tracts, receipts, and long columns of fig- ures. Have you finished these plaques? The hustle and bustle, the utter confusion, and the frustrat- ed expressions all became standard equipment as the year progressed. The mainstay of the staff was Mrs. Blust. whose experience and advice often saved the day. When individual pictures came back from the studio, we were faced with the almost im- possible task of alphabetizing them and making up plaques of over 1200 students. They accomplish this through participation in the Prince of Peace, Voice of Democracy, and other speech contests. In December the club sponsors a school speech tournament to promote a competitive spirit in the students interested in speech. Then in the fol- lowing months the speech team trav- els to various other high schools in the immediate area to compete with out-of-town speakers. The club sponsors two after-game dances, a Christmas corsage sale, and a bake sale. The profits from these activities go into the Masque and Gavel Treasury. Miss Olive Owens is the club sponsor. National Forensic League may be among the newest organizations at Sidney High School, but with Miss Owens as sponsor, it has picked up momentum and purpose. NFL offers degrees of merit to encourage speech participation. Par- ticipation means practice, and prac- tice brings experience - thus the old saying to learn is to do is the basis of the organization's real purpose. Members take part in local and inter- school speech tournaments, and give speeches before various groups of the COmmllnlty. The greatest value of NFL is the encouragement and incentive it gives the students to become effective speakers. It awards membership on a point basis-the membership require- ment is twenty points earned in de- bate and other interscholastic speaking and in service speaking. Members must be in the upper two thirds of their class scholastically. The club, which is made up of juniors and seniors, is a guidance club for students planning to go on to college to study to become teachers. The organization tries to help stu- dents learn to recognize and understand some of the problems that teachers must meet. It helps interested students to develop professional attitudes and gives them an opportunity to work with children in various schools around Sid- ney. The club also acts as a service or- ganization for the teachers and students at SHS. Members of the club are frequently called out of study halls or classes for an afternoon of substituting at the ele- mentary schools or in the classrooms at SHS. The teachers find these experi- ences interesting and often amusing. The club also planned a trip to one of Ohio's many colleges and universities. This was to help students choose the col- lege in which they will soon be training for a career in teaching. New Clubs Are Urganized Students who work in the library join the Li- SHHHH . . . Gridders Produce Fine Record As They The year 1956 will long be remembered in the football picture at SHS. The Yellow jack- ets, under the coaching of Ollie Cline, Bob Caton and A1 Ward, made their most impressive record since 1938 as they won six games, lost two, and tied one. A brief rundown on the ten playing dates follows: Sept. 7-Preview-Greenville was host to Piqua, Troy and Sidney in the annual pre-season dress rehearsal. The Yellow Jackets scored once against Piqua and played Troy to a scoreless tie in their two eight-minute quarters. Sept. 14-Findlay-Sidney traveled to Find- lay for their first game of the '56 season and outfought a tough Trojan team to win 20-7 and give Ollie Cline his first win as new head coach. Sept. 21 -Bellefontaine-The Chieftains gave Sidney a rough battle up to the fourth quarter when the Yellow jackets broke loose and scored 35 points to win their home opener 49-6. Sept. 28-Fairborn-Sidney took their first MVL game from Fairborn in a tense, hard-fought contest 14-0. The jackets defensive team earned most of the credit for this victory in holding the Flyers, offense and making the breaks. Oct. 5-Troy-The powerful Troy Trojans came to Sidney highly favored but had to play hard to win 23-14 over the Yellow jackets. The Trojans eventually won the MVL race. Oct. 12 -Miamisburg-- Sidney was rated somewhat the underdog in this game but proved their merit once more as they took a quick lead and stayed in command throughout the game to win 18-13 from a highly touted Viking team. Oct. 19-Fairmont-The Dragons got off to a quick start in this game and held Sidney to their lowest offensive game for the year. jim Andrews scored three times for Fairmont as Sidney fell 20-7. Oct. 25-Piqua-The Indians were ready and waitin' for the Yellow Jackets as the rivalry was renewed. A hard fought game ended in a 6-6 tie. Nov. 2-Xenia-This game was referred to as the finest played by a Sidney team in years. Xenia came to town with a fine record but was badly outplayed and lost 33-13. Nov. 9-Greenville-Sidney met a fired up Green Wave team in the final game of the sea- son and had to play hard to win 20-6. This was the first year for the Little Brown jug which will signify an extra goal when the two teams meet on the gridiron. With hearty appetites our conquering football heroes do justice to the fine feast set before them by the Moms. November 29 saw the closing event of a very successful football season as the Mothers' Club put on their annual Football Banquet. Trophies and awards were given out by Ollie Cline, newly installed mentor of the Yel- low jackets, who led them to their finest season in 18 years. Dick Ball and Danny Meyers were voted honorable co-captains for the team and Dick al- so won the coveted Dick Flanagan Trophy. joe Decker was voted the Mom Collins' Sportsmanship Award by his teammates. The affair was given an appropriate closing with Coach Caroll Widdoes of Ohio University giving a talk on the finer points of football and its importance in the athlete's life. After win- ning sixteen games and losing one during the past three years, the Wee Bees ran into many obstacles and did not win a game during the '56 season. Several boys from last year's squad were lost into the varsity ranks and new coaches jones and Kennon were faced with the job of rebuilding the squad. However, a much improved team was found developing toward the end of the season and many games were lost by only a few points. Games were played on a home and home basis with neighboring foes Bellefontaine, Green- ville, and Piqua, who after many years were fi- nally able to defeat the Wee Bees. While winning is an important factor in building morale, the main object of the junior high program is to teach the boys the valuable lesson of experience in different situations under game conditions. Co-operation with one another to build teamwork, and familiarity with the kind of system that will be taught them when they reach varsity level are also gained. Boys that earned letters are: Phil Allen, Charles Gallimore, john Haines, Ronnie Helman, Don Spangler, Kelly Waters, Paul Borders, Roger Cotterman, Malcolm Cramer, Cisco Ham- lin, Dave Fields, john Fultz, Gordon McDermott, Roger Reineke, Bob Rider, Dave Steinle, ,jerry Wells, Walter Partington, Don Rowell. At the end of the year a banquet and party was held for the boys at the Presbyterian church. This affair was introduced to the junior high ranks for the first time, as it was for the varsity boys. Then, at the Spring Banquet, the freshman members of the team were accepted into the var- sity and their mothers were accepted into the Football Mothers Club. FUTURE YELLOW JACKETS . . . Winter Brings On Basketball The basketball picture this year at SHS wasnlt so bright as in past years, but lack of height and experience, two very important fac- tors in this day and age of basketball, hampered the jackets greatly throughout the '56-57 season. Four of last year's starting five graduated, leaving the team short on experience. Only one member of this year's starting team was over six feet tall. A rough schedule gave no relief to Sidney. They won only three games out of seventeen. But Coach Caton's men are to be praised for their fight, as only a few points separated them from victory many times. This is especially true of the last home game of the season when powerful Tecumseh, who represented this district in the State Tournament, won over them by only five points. On the post-season all-star teams. Danny Meyers won a first team MVL berth, while Mel Nevergall and DeLoss Ike gained honorable mention. jerry McCoy, jon Wildermtith, and Dave Bumgardner comprised the rest of the var- sity squad. Future basketball looked promising, how- ever, as new coach Bill Kennon from Miami University took his reserve team through a suc- cessful year, winning ten and losing only four. jim Howell, Bill Bynum, Lloyd Block, Tim Wells and Charles Knoop were the stalwarts of next year's varsity team. The footprints we have traced in the halls of SHS will remain a marker of our joys and sor- rows, triumphs and defeats. Here we worked, played, laughed, and sometimes even cried. And now, all too soon we realize that it is almost over-never again can we be a part of the happy throng. Looking back, the last four years seem a maze of sports events, dances, parties, class discussions, club work, and scholar- ship tests. For some it may be disheartening to realize that none of those records can be erased, there are others who would not change a minute if they could. This last year was a busy one for all of us. Besides keeping our grades up to par and participating in the usual train of activities, there were many special events. Among them were the Christmas party we gave at the Children's Home, our class play, Onions in the Stew, the senior state scholarship tests, our farewell assembly, the senior banquet, and of course the prom. And at last we arrive at the gates of the world-happy with our achievements in graduating, a little frightened of the un- known future, and saddened at the thought of leaving SHS. This was their first year as senior high greenies. For the first time they were able to choose most of the subjects on their high school curriculum. Many members of the class joined various clubs and organizations such as Y-Teens, GAA, Hi-Y, Inter Nos, and the Library Club. Their class was also active in the choral groups, band, orchestra, and both the boys and girls participated in sports. The freshmen, attending their first big party this year, took a XVindy Walk. Not only were they active in sports and club ac- tivities, but many of the students were scholastically inclined. On each honor roll the freshman class had its share, and among the names were several with 4.00 averages. This year found an increased number of students enrolled in the sev- enth grade. Discovering many new and exciting experiences, they undertook them all with enthusiasm. For the first time these students took part in various sports and school activi- ties. The class of 1962 is well on its way on the short journey through Sidney High School and is eagerly awaiting the coming years when they will be the upperclassmen. This year they are building the foun- dation which will carry them through their high school years. Through proper guidance and hard work they prepared themselves for the years of senior high school ahead of them. Looking into the future, the students pondered the profession that they might enter. Through careful studying in their vocational guidance classes they chose the course of study that would best prepare them for the future. Many look with eager glances to- ward the freshman year that is just ahead. For many it will mean another period of readjustment, but for the group as a whole it will at long last bring the real feeling of being full- fledged members of the Sidney High School student body.
