During that time eighty-three classes have been regul- arly graduated. Many changes have occurred in the al- most hundred years since Sidney High School was founded. The horse and buggy has given way to the streamlined automo- bile. Hemlines have gone up and down several times. As you would expect, Sid- ney High has changed too. The favorite expression has changed from Oh, you kid! to Crazy, man, Crazy! The XYZ Society has given way to the Hi-Y, Y-Teens, and other organiza- tions. Even the cheers have changed a lot since Iunior! Iunior! Zip! Zami Zoar! Sidney High School-1904 Sidney High School Through The Years 3 ,,. . Ianet Blake. and Io Bowen at the piano Hotel llvugner Zimpber Eleclric Fourth annual homecoming was held on October 16, 1953, before the Piqua-Sidney game. Five senior girls were chosen from the entire senior class by the upper three grades to be in the Homecoming Court. These five girls were driven to the platform in shiny, new convertibles. There it was announced that Marcia McVay would reign as queen at the 1953 Homecoming Dance. The charming queen was crowned by Roger Stevenson and was presented with a bouquet of white mums by Barbara Allen, the 1952 Homecoming Queen. The queen's attendants were Io Bowen, Iudy Vordemark, Berniece Mitchell, and Elaine Doll. lerry Blake, Cole Tremain, Gary David- son, and Frank Dulaney escorted the attend- ants to the float. The queen and her attend- ants wore corsages of yellow mums. A Homecoming Dance followed the game. The Annual Staff, which sponsored the dance and the Homecoming, decorated the gym in tall colors. Bobby Wertz's Combo furnished the music for the dancing. HOMECOMING COURT, left to right: Gary Davidson, Io Bowen, Frank Dulaney. Elaine Doll. Roger Stevenson. Homecoming Queen Marcia McVay. Helen Cole, Kathleen Oldham As Sidney High has grown, many departments have been added. It has become necessary to add more custodians. The office now requires the serv- ices of many office girls to help take care of the increasing number of stu- dents. As rural districts have been added to the school system, bus drivers have become a necessary part of the school program. The curriculum has undergone many changes since the opening of the century. In 1903 the subjects offered were English, Latin, mathematics, phys- iology, physical geography, botany, physics, chemistry, commercial geo- graphy, bookkeeping, psychology, pedagogy, music, drawing, and rhetoricals. Civics was required the last four months of the senior year. 8 Ferguson Construction A biology class uses micro- scopes to obtain knowledge Senior mathematics class is hard at work r - l Sidney High now offers fifty different subjects to students, including a home economics course, vocational agriculture department, and industrial depart- ment. A complete business course has been established for those Wishing to enter the business field. Music and dramatic departments help keep Sidney High from being a place of all work and no play. The foreign language of- fered is Latin. Until this year French was also taught. Ferguson Construction Classrooms and Subjects Added Mechanical drawing is offered in mod- em schools Laiin silll holds a place in ihe cur- riculum Seventh grade social science class studies qeoqraphy 10 C. The size of graduating classes shows one of the biggest changes. The class of 1903, for instance, had 21 members. It was about one seventh of the size of the class of '54. Many committees are needed to carry on the activities of a class this size. Some of these are banquet committee: Sam Bender, chair- man, Ida Cunningham, Berniece Mitchell, Ianet Hahn, Rhonda Maxon, and Pat Long: caps and gowns: Marcia McVay, chairman, Roger Stevenson, Sandra Spinner, Terry Shatto, Ian- ice Leady, and Gary Van Fossen: childen's home party: Marjorie Biake, chairman, George Kookootsedes, Io Bowen, Tom Applegate, Mar- tha Ellerman, and Patsy Hatcher. Class colors committee: Shelby lean Ha- zel, chairman, Patty Bertsch, Carol McKnight, Phil Veith, Ronnie Moore, and Sylvia Stockton: class memorial: Ierry Blake, chairman, Phyllis Libbee, Tom Dunnavant, Norma Martin, lim Verdier, and Iudy Vordemark: flower com- mittee: Nancy Kaylor, chairman, Bill Bond, Hazel Surber, Carol Carey, Marilyn Moore, and Hank Boller. Invitations and cards committee: Gary Davidson, chairman, Virginia Hickerson, Kath- leen Nevergall, Rairdon Young, Carol Smith, and Shirley Englehaupt: and the last assembly committee: Elaine Doll, chairman. Priscilla Hill, Bob Dilbone, Carol Moore, Gretchen Milem, and Carl Schaefer. Three other people, Marcia McVay, Ierry Blake, and Roger Stevenson, have done cr lot to help the school and class by serving on the student council. Yes, as the years roll by, many things change, but the pleasant memories the seniors of '54 take with them will never change. They'll remember this year and cherish it always. 18 English Studio, Inc. En- tering their freshman year with an enrollment of 182, they showed much ability in music, sports. and scholastic subjects. But time rolls swiftly by and before long they were beginning their sophomore year. The Sophomore Party was the big social event of the year. Sports ability stood out this year because it marked the first time the boys could try out for Varsity sports. Bob Allen received his varsity football letter, and reserve basketball letters were awarded to Ronnie Bell, Tim Houlds- worth, Bob Allen, and Herb Wells. Not to be outdone by the boys the girls also participated in girls' varsity athletics. The Divine Flora . which was presented as the Iunior class play, was the first activity of the next school year. It showed the juniors to have much ability in dramatics. Next year as Seniors the class will have to work hard to keep up the good standards they have set in the past. The St. Mary? The Senior Y-Teens is composed of junior and senior girls. They have interesting and beneficial programs at each of their meetings. At various times during the year, the girls sell stationery and basketball schedule pencils. They also sell popcorn and potato-chips at the football games. The big social event of the year for Senior Y-Teens is the formal dance they sponsor along with the Senior Hi-Y. The club is under the sponsorship of Miss Frances Sargeant and Miss Dorothy Duncan. Composed of freshman and sophomore girls, Iunior Y-Teens is formed on the same principles as the older group. During money-raising campaigns for dif- ferent foundations, such as the Disabled Veter- ans or Tuberculosis, the lunior Y-Teens con- tribute by selling poppies to the public. The girls are aided in carrying out their many worthwhile projects by their sponsor, Miss Bettie Duncan. Both groups put on assemblies that were outstanding and original. Now with the advancement of the automobile, laws and safety measures are needed for the protection of the student. There has been a low rate of traffic accidents at Sidney High because of the presence of the Safety Patrol. The Safety Patrol was organized in 1941 by the Shelby County Automobile Associa- tion. It was sponsored by Granville Robinson. At the present time the patrol is under the direction of C. O. Wells. Each year in the annual recognition assembly the members receive certificates of merit from the State Department of Highways. In addition the First row: Charles Herzog, Melvin Woodell, Don Tayv lor, Tom Seving, Iames Friend. Second row: Tom Keysor, Mike Boller, Iim Wells, Marion Watren. Third row: Hank Motor Club honors them at a Christmas party. It also plays host every spring when the boys go to Cincinnati to a league baseball game. Regardless of the weather the patrol, com- posed of junior and senior high boys, are out each day. They direct student traffic at noon and evening when school is dismissed. Stu- dent violations are reported to the student judge, Hank Boller, who hears the cases and announces the sentence. The Student Court was initiated in 1950. Those patrol members absent from the picture are Terry Katterhenry, Iohn Keysor, Larry Flinn, Paul Webb, Danny Wiford, and Paul Wiford. The Latin Club, Inter Nos, is made up of second year Latin students, under the leadership of Miss Emma Pfeifer, the Latin teacher. During Latin week in Ohio, the members sponsored a poster contest and awarded prizes to the winner. Throughout the year the club is very active and has many projects. One of the biggest events is the Roman Banquet, at which the members dine in true Roman style. The money making func- tion of the club is the sale of doughnuts, each Thursday after school. On November 14 the Band and Orchestra Parents' Association sponsored a trip to the Ohio State-Purdue football game at Columbus. Money for financing this organization and others in the music department is raised dur- ing the magazine campaign in the fall, the Mid-Winter Concert, and the annual Tag Day in the spring. On September ll a young and inexperienced bunch of boys took the field in the annual Northern Preview held at the Piqua Stadium. This young team proceeded to steal the show by scoring the only touchdown of the eve- ning against the Trojans. They also played to a scoreless tie with the host team. Lima South Tigers journeyed to Sidney on the following Friday and outscored the locals 38 to 7. The first out-of-town game was played on September 25 at Bellefontaine. The game was nip and tuck all the way, and at the final gun the score stood 20 to 19 in favor of Belle- fontaine. Miamisburg provided the opposition for Sidney in their first MVL start. A strong Viking 80 team led throughout the game and defeated the Sidney crew 39 to 6. Fairmont, the next league foe, also held a commanding lead through most of the game, and the MVL champs-to-be were victorious 453 to 7. A home game with Sidney's traditional rival, the Piqua Indians, was one of the more exciting contests of the year as the tribe defeated the Yellow Iackets 7 to O. Piqua was the only team to shut out the locals throughout the season. On October 23 Sidney took on the Xenia High School Buccaneers at Xenia. ln a loose- ly played contest the Iackets were bested 28 to 13. Iulia Lamb Field was the scene of the next contest between the Greenville Green Waves and Sidney's Yellow Iackets. Green- ville held the upper hand throughout the game and came out on the long end of a 27 to 7 score. Spirit High In Action-Packed Games In the next game things started to look brighter as the local squad shut out Massillon's Iunior Varsity 20 to 0. Massillon was a new opponent on the schedule: and the contest, played at home, was non-league. This win started things rolling: in the last game of the year the young and inexperienced team be- came real varsity caliber as it came from be- hind to beat the Trojans 12 to 7 and push them into the league basement. This win at Troy made the future look brighter. On the division page is a picture of Bob Sparks, who swept football honors at the ban- quet by being chosen most valuable lineman, honorary captain, Dick Flanagan award win- ner. He was also named first team guard on the All-MVL squad. Brad Bolden was named most valuable back and named to the second All-MVL team. Also named to the second team was Bob Allen, who played end on the squad. Center, George Kookootsedes, also was recognized as he was voted honorable men- tion in the IVIVL. The team owes its credit to the fine coach- ing staff headed by Wayne Gibson. Under him were Paul Powers, line coach, and May- nard Amstutz, end coach. This banquet is only one of the many things the football mothers do to promote and im- prove the grid sport at Sidney High. Some of their notable improvements and services the last year were the new bleachers for the football teams, meals for the team before all the games and after the home games, and a printed booklet with information on the members of the squad. At the banquet, which featured a baked ham dinner enjoyed by all, Woody Hayes, head football coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes was the speaker. This fete honored the forty-six boys who comprised the football squad, and the managers. As has been customary lately, the seniors were presented with little gold footballs by the Football Mothers Club. Bonnoront The 1953-54 basketball squad finished the season with a non-impressive record, but a lot of experience and returning lettermen. This can mean a lot to a coach who is in the midst of rebuilding a basketball team. Coach Caton's boys had a rough year, winning only 3 out of 18 games. But sometimes it takes a season like that to develop good players. The Yellow Iackets wound up the season by playing in the district tournament at Troy. They fell before the Chieftains from Belleion- taine in the first round. Sidney's reserve squad had a much bet- ter season than the varsity. The won - lost average does not look too good, but many of their games were one and two point losses. You can be sure the varsity will use these boys in the coming years. Let's not forget one thing, however. The Yellow Iackets played a very tough and rug- ged schedule. Monarcb Machine Tool Co. 85 Three Senior Cagers Play Last Game Roger Stevenson. playing at a guard position, was a very good defensive man. Although Roger didn't score many points, he could always be counted on to pick up a loose ball. This was Rogers fourth year ol basketball. 86 Wayne Kinninger played first string center. and he also proved to be a good shot at the basket. He was among the iirst fifteen scorers in the league. Wayne was placed in the honorable mention list for the All-MVL teams. This was his fourth year of basket- ball. Jacle's Snack Shop Larry Grandy was rated throughout the Miami Valley as one of the best players in the league. Larry was placed on the All-MVL team ior the second straight year. He was also one of the league's leading scorers from his guard position. Junior Squad Trains For The Future Rounding off the sport scene at Sidney High are the Iunior Wee Bees. These boys are from the seventh and eighth grades and are coached by Mr. Powers and Mr. Gibson. They, like the varsity, have regularly scheduled games, some of them being held on the homecourt and some of them, out of town. Special letters are presented to the boys who played in a certain number of quarters. EIGHTH GRADE BASKETBALL TEAM Seated: B o l i n, McDermott, Knoop, Worley. Mill e r, Bertsch. The highlight of the year was the annual Celina Iunior High Tournament, in which Sidney lost out in the finals by one point to Coldwater. These boys show great promise tor the years to come. Purdy, I. Spangler Cinder Pathmen Sprint To Laurels Larry Gi-andy One of the least publicized sports, track, plays a big part in the athletic program at Sidney High School. One of the better track squads to come from Sidney High was the 1954 team. The Iackets were among the top teams in the league. Besides the regularly scheduled meets the team took part in the Troy Relays, Miami Valley league, and the District Track Meet. Although short in men for the sprints, the team always put its confidence in Tom Apple- gate, Iim Spangler, and Garnie Avy. The 440 yd. dash was controlled by Dan- ny Schlagetter. He also joined with three other team mates to make up the mile relay team. In 1953 at the Troy Relays Larry Grandy broke the school record in the quarter mile. He ran it in 51.2. Running in the half mile division were Larry Leininger and Larry Lorton. Bob Old- ham and lim Babcock handled the mile run. Bob, who is now a sophomore, won the mile at the Troy Relays in his freshman year. Bob Oldham The hurdles were handled by Doug Mark- er, Larry Leininger, Tom Applegate. Doug is only a sophomore. Although the team was relatively short in field men, many points were added to the scores by Troy Lovette, Verdell Hensley, and Ronnie Bell. The coach of the 1954 track team was Maynard Amstutz, and Mr. Gibson helped handle the runners. 89 The 1954 tennis and golf teams did not open their seasons before the annual went to press, so it is rather hard to write anything about them. However, the 1953 tennis team had great success. Sam Bender and George Kookoot- sedes won the MVL doubles championship, which was held at Troy. The team also par- ticipated in the districts at Dayton Walnut Hills. The 1953 golf squad also had a good sea- son. Lettermen that year were Phil Carey, Gary Gooder, Bob Kaser, Bob Kritzer, and Bill Von Meyer. The golf team ended the year with a good showing in the MVL at Miamis- burg and the district at Dayton. 90 TENNIS TEAM: Bill Gruebmeyer, Sam Bender, Gecxgc Kookootsedes, Larry Waggener, Mr. Whitt. This shot shows some of the intramural teams prac- ticing up for their noon encounters The Senior boys' intramural basketball team ended its campaign by defeating the Hi-Y for the championship. This made a sea- sonal record for the Seniors of eleven wins and one loss. The only loss suffered was at the hands of the Hi-Y, by a score of 16-15. Other teams which participated in the league besides the Seniors and Hi-Y were the Soph- omores, Juniors, Co-ops, and the FFA. Mr. Am- stutz was in charge of the games. In the girls' intramural basketball league, games are held at noon and also after school. The teams are composed of girls from the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior class- es, each having one or more teams. Miss Gan- non is in charge of these games. 9 Tennis-shoe Girls Have Good Season The Girl's Varsity Basketball team had a record of four wins and two losses during the '53-'54 season. Although they were defeated by Troy and Piqua, they lost by only one and two points respectively. The Reserves also had a iinal record of two losses and tour wins, losing to Greenville and Troy Reserves. The Seniors, who played their last season ol inter-scholastic basketball. were Helen Cole, Carol McKnight, Marj Blake. Patsy Hatcher, Marcia Carey, and Phyllis Fair. The team was coached by Miss Claire Gannon. All lreshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible for varsity basketball. The games and practices are held immediately alter school. The Varsity Volleyball team had a fairly clean record, dropping only one game- to Troy. Those that tell to Sidney were Piqua, Botkins, Minster, and West Milton. The Reserves had a record of six straight wins, easily overcoming all their opponents. The volleyball team will lose ten girls through graduation. These girls are Sylvia Stockton, Carol Carey, Sandra Spinner, Kathleen Nevergall, Carol McKnight. Phyllis Fair, Helen Cole, Marcia Carey, Marilyn Wolfe, and Patsy Hatcher. The volleyball team. which is also coached by Miss Gannon, is open icr tryouts to all senior high school girls. 92 GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL TEAM First row: Marilyn Wolfe. They practice one period a week. The cheerleaders are rep- resentatives trom each class. Tryouts for cheerleading are held each spring. The girls are chosen on the basis of their ability by a select group of members of the faculty and by students representing the clubs, organizations, and student body. This fall the girls were presented with jackets by the football mothers. The junior high cheerleaders, sponsored by Mrs. Ianice Shedd were elected by the sen- ior high cheerleaders and their sponsor. They back the junior high team in all their games. This activity provides excellent training for varsity cheerleading. 93 Dr. Clay Barfield Dr. Clayton Kiracofe Dr. Paul Maurer Dr. lames W.
