Zlouh, fnunia, af QJLS, A familiar object seen in almost every room at Sidney High is The Clock. Its bright face hides a mechanism which is always clicking away twenty-four hours of the day. When seventh graders first come to school, these clocks are very novel to them because they clicl: every minute, but for the six-year-clock-watcher each click means a minute closer to the end of the school clay. The most outstanding clock at Sidney High is the clock on the score board at games which seems always to go too slowly when Sidney is ahead and too East when Sidney is behind. All in all though, the clocks around Sidney High School click off many happy moments for students and teachers alike. sv az x f 1 K 5 914, tha, SENIOR ORCHESTRA, Violins: Carol Knasel, Diane Berting, Ging- er Davey, Carol McKnight, Carol Smith, Janet Blake, Karen Bran- denburg, Kathleen Oldham, Io Bowen, Sandra Smith, Rosemary Smith, Barbara Seifert, Iudy Brown, Gretchen Brunner: flutes: Ida Cunningham, lean Bowen: clarinets: Tcm Dunnavant, Larry Wag- goner, Daniel McNeil, Ierry Blake: cellos: Gretchen Milsm, Mar- lene Kaufman, Catherinlu Russell: viola: Carl Schaefer: trumpets: William Greubmeyer, Larry Brookhart, Ierry Scanlin: french horn: Richard Lipold: trombones: Ierry Steinle, Iohn Uncapher: alto scrxcphones: Gary Davidson, Sandra Spinner: tenor saxo- phone: David Aschenbach: baritone saxophone: David Dormire: drum: Iacque Neer: bass viol: Marjorie Blake, Alice Glore, loan Steinkemper: tympani: Eugene Fogt: piano: Shelby Hazel Lower picture, IUNIOR ORCHESTRA, Violins: Ianet Harman, Kathleen Oldham, Gretchen Brunner, Carol Knasel, Diane Berting, Shirley Altholf, Iudy Brown, Diane Blake, I-Xrlynn Hill, Susan Gehrlich: flutes: Martha Drake, Iudy Knasel: oboe: Mike Boller: clarinetsz Mike Downey, Don Haney, Tom Prctsman, Iames Link- er: saxophones: Tim Wells, Roger Schaffer, Terry Hefman, Dale Parke, Tom Pence: cello: Catherinlu Russel, Diane Fields, Ian Scanlin: comet: Bob Pellman, Dave Abbott, Robert Moore, Dick Dormire, Iohn Kraft, George Chrisman, Tom Hughes: saxophone: David Aschenbach: bassoon: Paul Steinle: trombones: lames Hill, Hugh Bonnoront, Iames Fouss, Don Widney: cymbals: Ierry Wenners: drums: lim Wells, Tcm Stocker, Iohn Keysor: accom- panist: Dortha Sue Shepherd: bass viol: Ann Minton, Brenda Welch, Barbara Hepler: student director: Ierry Scanlin: tympani: Hugh Turley ' J liars U Wim!-'5fU ' The senior orchestra, directed by Paul Fitzwater, rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students of Sidney High not only attend regular classes throughout the day but also have the opportunity to take part in many outside activities. This makes their day 'round the clock at SHS more interesting and full. Variety is the spice ot life. Several senior girls organized the Senior Girls' Trio in their spare time. It consists of representatives from every class in the school and has at least one faculty adviser. The activities of the Council were initiated by a get-acquainted party for all the students and teachers new to Sidney High. The class presidents and presidents of all major organizations were invited to at- tend. All the activities of the Student Council are financed through pledges by the students to the Student Chest Fund. The most out- standing of the activities are the publication of the handbook and the sponsoring of outside talent for assembly programs. Each year the Council provides for the presale of tickets for football and basketball games. At the end of each six weeks period the honor roll is computed under the Counci1's supervision. Locker clean-ups are carried on monthly throughout the year, and during mid- winter a courtesy campaign is organized. Instructions are given to each room in school in case of a fire, and then fire drills are practiced during the fall and spring. Attendance plaques are awarded each six weeks to the home rooms having the highest percentage of attendance. At the end of each year a lost and found sale is sponsored by the Council. The articles left in the lost and found department of the school are sold at auction for a few cents each. This year's Student Council was privileged to have as its secre- tary-treasurer, Bob Conrad, the first male member to hold that office in the history of Sidney High School. The new card catalog this year came in mighty handv. Because of many displays from various teachers, and redecoration, the library was cozy and attractive this year. Many new books arrived throughout the year, including exciting sport stories and interesting career books. Students do not have to worry about getting a good book, because there are many fiction stories and biographies on many subjects. The set of Popular Science books, the Book of Authors, and encyclo- pedias are useful for information and reference. Many magazines, such as Life, Popular Mechanics, add to the en- joyment of students While they are at the library. Also, for help in planning parties or for clubs and organizations, books, pamphlets, and booklets may be found. Such a Wide collection of material in the library gives the student body a Wonderful chance to enlarge its reading field. Miss Bettie Duncan, Who is in charge of the Sidney High library, re- ceives assistance from capable girls in the ninth through the twelfth grades. They help students throughout the day. They are preparing with concen- trated study for an elimination test. The students having the three highest scores in each test go to Miami University to take the State Scholarship Tests. The competition is always very strong. Each year the seniors participate in the Senior Scholarship Test conducted by the State Department of Education. The test in- cludes the five general subjects: mathematics, English, history, science, and reading. These tests help stimulate in students a desire for further knowledge and bring to light hidden abilities. In addition to all this, they find time to sponsor an after-season Football Banquet and a spring Kick-oft Banquet. He was sports editor of Sidney High School News 'q,Hol0, Nine hundred school days have flown past for the busy class of '54 since they entered SHS as seventh graders. They seemed to have more than their share of talent. Not only the boys but also the girls of this class were active in sports. Nine lasses played on the girls' varsity basketball team and eleven boys participated in football, while there were five boys on the basketball team. An average of twenty-five per cent of the eleventh graders made the honor roll each six Weeks. This high percentage shows the scholastic ability present in the junior class. The girls sextet sang a number of times at Wright Patterson Hos- pital, and six of the dance band members were juniors.
