Be- hind the football program were three boys who did their job Well without exciting much comment. Charles Brown, senior, Iim Beck, junior, Iohn McKnight, sophomore. were managers of the 1949 grid team. The jobs given to these boys were innumerable. Their main tasks were taking care of the equipment-uniforms, and prac- tice balls-chalking the field, and running errands. D u r i n g the games they were on the spot with the medical kit and wet towels, After the game was over-win or lose-when everyone else had gone, the managers could always be found hanging up suits and getting ready for the next game. Football-the very word suggests nippy weather, hot dogs, hoarse throats, and excite- ment for millions of rabid fans. Here in Sidney High School it was the main sport from August 20, when a squad of sixty hopeful aspirants reported to Head Coach Tom Pierson and his assistants, Maynard Amstutz, Jake Angerer, and Bob Caton. This squad was quickly pared to less than forty boys, who carried Sidney High's Orange and Black ban- ners through a hectic season to post four wins, four losses, and one tie. For the second year in a row Sidney ended the season around the 502, mark. The sport is in the upswing after many disappointing years since 1937, when the MVL trophy was brought home for the first and last time. A marked change of attitude is noticed as more boys report each year to the coaches. Wauseon is a town near Toledo, noted for its grid power- houses. The Yellow Iackets got off to a good start by winning their opening game before a sell-out crowd. This win came about by a blocked kick that was recovered in the end zone in the last 60 seconds of play. Score: Sid- ney l3, Wauseon 6. The Iackets learned the meaning of over- confidence when they met Bellefontaine on the latter's field, as they came out second best. The Chieftans scored in every quarter to make the first loss of the still young season for the Sid- ney High stalwarts. Score: Sidney 13, Belle- fontaine 33. The Iackets opened their Miami Valley League season September 30. lt was Dads' night for Sidney, and the boys went out to win for dear old dad. For the first half the Iackets battled on even terms with Piqua's Red and White legions and at halftime held a 13-6 lead. The Indians carne on the field the second half determined to wipe out that lead, and superior power and weight won. The score: Sidney 13, Piqua 20. It was the third Week in a row that the Iackets had been able to score only 13 points against their rivals. The Sidney High banner bearers traveled to Xenia the following week, determined to win. And win they did as they took to the air to sew up the ball game early. The win showed the Iackets to be an air-minded as well as ground-minded team. The score read: Sidney 25, Xenia 7.
