A iw my sw This has been a great year! exclaimed the husky hornet at the close of school, and in an in- stant he was summing up the highlights of his ac- tivity-packed year. Junior High entrance. Between class rush. f 'AFA Weekly assembly was one of his principal likes and his eyes sparkled merrily as he related the memories of Wednesday mornings. After the sec- ond bell he buzzed out of room 20 and while the senior orchestra was playing, winged his way to his place in the balcony. There he watched his friends display talents and abilities and enthusiastically applauded out- side talent booked by the student council. The patriotic pest always sang the national anthem and recited the pledge of allegiance with all his heart. Then Sid would bow his head reverently for devotions. Just before lunch, Sid went to the auditorium to observe junior high assembly, Usually the junior high orchestra play- ed the processional, anthem, and recessional. A natnon rs made great not by its frultful acres but by the men who cultuvate them not by Its great forests but by the men who use them not by nts mines but by the men who work ln them not by nts railways but by the men who bulld and run them lt could be added that a natuon IS made great also by :ts patrnots who leave the pleasant ways of cnvnluon lufe to protect and defend that nation From our own halls scores of young men have left to man guns on Iwo Juma to hack theur way through the gungles of New Guunea and to fly the hump an the Burma China theater l-lalfway around the world they stormed the beaches of North Africa nnched theur bloody way up the boot of Italy swarmed the concrete barruers on the shores of Normandy and spent a butter long wunter on the treacherous terrain of France and Germany ln the first anxious days of World War ll our navy turned the tude of battle from a sltuatlon of utter defeat to one of hopeful vuctory ln the eventful naval encounters of Mrdway and the Coral Sea Sudney s sons left not because they loved war but be cause the fmal prnze of peace and security was so precious to them that they were wlllang to sacrlfuce their very lnves If need be Often at theur dlstant posts scattered everywhere on the globe they recalled their carefree schooldays when thelr greatest worry was to avoud capture on a mnssuon of extreme darlng goung to and from Charlne s They could remember the feel of the autumn sun on theur backs at football drills They could remember louternng on the way to llbrary cheer ang madly at the games and sympathetucally applaudnng the weekly assemblies They could also remember derldnng the teachers mercilessly and occasionally they wondered In their new found wnsdom If maybe they hadnt been just a luttle harsh In theur condemnation Sndney Hugh thanks her loyal sons and daughters but she can never express adequate apprecnatlon for those deeds done an the name of democracy wherein a school like ours can exust To those who have returned but even more to those who wall never return we reverently acknowledge our lncal culable debt and bow our heads nn silent trubute l J O O I I uf ,Q g I ' ' , I lt L ALS' .
