The little fellow grew curious about their daily activities. One morning, taking courage in hand, he stealthily flew into the big school door. Where do I go from here? quoth he. Just then he was startled nearly out of his yellow jacket by the sharp ringing of a bell. Suddenly Sid was surrounded by an on-rush of students. He spotted the familiar face of a student friend and tagged along with him. Striking up a conversation, the wee wasp discovered many interesting facts about the building, soon to become his permanent home. Did you know, said his chum, that there are 2050 feet of corridor in the school? And 75 rooms, 900 steps, and 393 light bulbs! The old building was constructed in l9l3 and the new build- ing in l93l, Well satisfied with what he had learned and what he had ob- served, Sid immediately transferred his belongings from Hive l to Room 20 Cf!-lhnl SIDNEY, 0 sf 61 'S' J .J 3, 'U i .Q -W-P1 rin! 3 4- vw- ., ,gf i 5' allege? After the sec- ond bell he buzzed out of room 20 and while the senior orchestra was playing, winged his way to his place in the balcony. There he watched his friends display talents and abilities and enthusiastically applauded out- side talent booked by the student council. The patriotic pest always sang the national anthem and recited the pledge of allegiance with all his heart. Then Sid would bow his head reverently for devotions. Just before lunch, Sid went to the auditorium to observe junior high assembly, Usually the junior high orchestra play- ed the processional, anthem, and recessional. Bright and early one Monday morning, Sid decided to make a more thorough investiga- tion of his new home. The clotter of type- writers drew his attention, so he zipped next door where thirty-two eager students pounded the keys vigorously. After watching the juniors and seniors taking a speed test, the mighty mascot became so exhausted that he staggered from the roam toward the senior study hall to relax tor a moment. While he rested, he observed the pictures of old graduates adorning the walls. Sid became bored with what he saw of the deep dark S H S past, and decided to seek something more stimulating. Always interested in figures - mathematically, that is - the wizardous wasp with a whirl of wings whizz- ed to the junior high building to drop in on Miss Keller's seventh grade arithmetic class, TYPewriter Sefeno de 0 A glimpse at Scene from Mr. LulI's inner office. concentration-hmmm? When the bell rong, Sid got up with the rest of the students ond went to Junior high study hall for o quick tour of inspection. Just then he glimpsed Mr. Lull wolking down the corridor ond flew out to join him, chatting obout this ond thot. On reoching Mr. LulI's office, Sid spied Mrs. Robinson diligently putting out the weekly bulletin, To do his good deed for the doy, he delivered o copy of the bulletin to Miss Line in Mr. Crowford's office. moticions. JVM. Miss KeIIer's seventh grade mathe Wl1aI's cookin'? ...sceneftzlnlfzec ed With trusty camera in hand Sid shot his pals while they were deeply engrossed in the various experimental laboratories in both junior and senior high school buildings. He was quite proud of the results of his efforts, so he has reproduced them upon these pages for all his friends to see. As he snapped the cooking class, his only regret was that his camera could not capture the appetizing aromas that he sniffed and the delicious flavors that he sampled with such satisfaction, Two double-period cooking class- es meet with Miss Duncan each morning in the kitchen. Here they learn the art of cook- ing everything from soup to nuts. His Brownie focussed next on the co-ops. He caught them perched on their high stools making painstakingly accurate drawings of machine parts, Sid was amazed at the degree of exactness to which their work was con- structed. The blueprints baffled him, but the boys saw them clearly and enjoyed drafting them. Future physicists at work is the name Sid gave to the middle picture on the opposite page. The boys' attention is centered on a high voltage-high frequency induction coil. At full power several thousand volts can be produced by this coil, Sid thinks he titled the above picture quite aptly. Here is just a word of explanation for those who have not undergone the rigors of a chemistry couise. The true formula lFeS'2HClIFeCl2'H2Si gives hydrogen sul- fide, which is recognized by an odor like rot' ten eggs. Chemistry lab is up on the second floor and the atmosphere is usually laden with smoke of one kind or another plus num- erous distasteful fumes. Sid was quite for- tunate to click the shutter of his Brownie be' fore the experiments really got under way. The fotographic fellow took not only the shots found on these and the following pages, but many others for which there was not room. 71' ff2f 4,?5y, 1 FeS + HCI 1 PU!! Physics-baffling, isn'f if? The Student Council is the governing body composed of representatives of junior and senior high school, together with two faculty members and the principal, ex-officio. The outstanding project of this organiza- tion is the publication of an informative handbook regarding curricula and giving a general description of all school activities. Sponsorship of outside talent for assembly programs is another important function. Voice boxes were set up in junior and senior high school for the purpose of enabling students to contribute suggestions for the 50l betterment of the school through their council. Another recent addition to the Student Coun- cil program was the public installation service held in the auditorium. Student Council plays an important part in all-round school life by sponsoring after game dances, locker clean-ups, courtesy cam- paigns, by awarding attendance plaques, and by calculating honor roll ratings. The initial activity in which the Student Council participates is the get-acquainted picnics in the fall for all new students and the class officers. LIBRARY STAFF Under the capable supervision of Miss Adda Hert the Sidney High School library serves approximately 400 students each day. Twenty-one junior librarians assist Miss l-lert by checking out and receiving books and signing library slips. At least two students work each period. The library is located on the second floor of the new building. The first room contains the book stacks, and the second is devoted to the reading room. This well-equipped department comprises 4,l l6 volumes. Each month the Senior Hi-Y 51 Left to right standing: Vir- ginia Moong Phyllis Wiessinger, Bill Mauck, Alberta Laws, Jackie McVay, James Stock- still, Miss l-lertj Barbara Dris- kell, Mary Ellen Goshorn, Marion Klaussg Tillie Goshorn, Carol Monger. Club contributes a Book-of-the-Month Club selection. During the past year the two sets of Encyclopedia Brittanica, the junior and senior editions, were also added to the large collection of reference volumes. Among these are World Enclyclopedia, New Wonder World, Cornpton's Enclyclope- dia, Lincoln Library, Webster's international Dictionary and numerous others. Fifteen cur- rent magazines dealing with many subjects are on the subscription list. Members of the staff present an assembly program annually. All those who are working or have worked on the staff are eligible for membership in the Library Club. Last fall the Class of i946 decided to sponsor the publication of a year-book, Alle- gra Riefstahl was chosen editor-in-chief by a board consisting of English teachers, senior class sponsors, the principal and the class president. The board assisted Allegra in choosing the staff. The idea became a reality through the efforts of the circulation managers, Bill Dil- bone and Ruth Berger, and the advertising chairmen, Dick Melvin and Patty Jewett. Additional members of the advertising staff were Polly Slagle, Sue Kerr and Jeanne Stude- vant. Dorothy Hawkins kept the books. Next a campaign was launched to secure a name for the annual, The title, YELLOW JACKET, won by a great majority . ,W Editor-in-chief Riefstahl 'Q' , iii Soon room 20, headquarters for the YEL- LOW JACKET, was humming with activity. The photography staff at once began clicking away, making schedules for pics of school activities and individual shots of the students. The members of this staff were Don Sneary, Sam Jackson and Charles Cartwright. Under the artistic touch of the art editors, Sally Woolley and Eugene Runyon, Sid sprang to life to become our famous mascot. Dottie Earl and Jo Rickert acted as Sid's personal secretaries in covering all copy nfcterial except the sports articles, which were handled by Bob Bulle and Libby Robinson. Carol Kingseed, assistant editor, helped with all copy writing. The typing force, composed of I2 seniors, prepared the material to be sent to the printers. April l5, l946, the book left Sidney l-li to be made a finished product by the printers and binders, Only then could the staff mem- bers breathe a sigh of relief ond feel that theirs was a job well done. ff, Fools rush in where angels fear to tread Viz Md ny Babcock Row two Terry Applegate Dottue Earl Carlene Muller Carol Kungsccd Uberene Harruson Mary Moothart Sallw Woolley Row three Lee Ruefstahl Sarah Muddleton Vurgunua Gross Lewue Warbung ton Muss Flaugher Helen Watkuns Phyl Stewart Patsy Sargent Carol Monger Wayne Falke Phyllus Wuessunger Beverly Bodey Pb Har Left to rught row one Bob Welch Jen Edutors come lCarlenel edutors go lCaroIl Every fourth peruod room l-4 us transformed from a common place Englush classroom unto :J busy newspaper offuce Under the supervusuon of Muss Jean Flaugher the Sudney Hugh School News s publushed weekly un the downtown Sudney Dauly News Eughteen reporters cover all school events The hugh school news serves as an agency un presentung school lufe to the publuc lf one were to walk unto the room such baftlung expressuons as erbar metro mem phus pyramud three deck and eught pount whuch are types of headlunes would confront the observer Also confusung to the outsuder would be the terms straught news features leads edutoruals and untervuews The cub reporters soon become as profucuent un talkung shop as the veterans Members themselves make up the page every Monday afternoon un the downtown composung room Caruene Muller succeeded Carol Kungseed as edutor at the begunnung of second semester Assustant edutor Terry Applegate also doubles as boys sports edutor Gurls sports are hand led by Sarah Muddleton who replaced Dorothy Ear The typusts are Sarauane Woolley and Mary Moothart 2 in Left to right, row one: McMorting Lonsburyg row two: Horgerg Melving Whiteg Fosterg row three Boblitg Abbotg Endersg Overmang Snappy Lontzg Durrontg row four: Moxsong Schillingg Hodqeg Mosteller Dunnovontg Brodingg Schieberg Dormirej Swongerg Althoffg row five: Schompg Mungerj Bakery Lynch. , As it plays the SHS Alma Mater, the band swings into this familiar formation which is shown on the left. ar, I C543 Viv 'I I l us: 5 i I 9 Y 'Q Left to right, row one: Earl, row two: Lowes, Cummins, Kookootsedesj Young, Kendall, row three: Snyder: Fair Snapp, Colmarg Emley, l-largerg Von Mever, lngland. row four: Heinfeldg McClure R. Unique formations delighted spectators between the halves of football games, At each game various motifs were symbolized. Out- standing formations included a taxicab, Ohio, a cat with switching tail, a jack-o- lantern, a viking ship, and a formation of airplanes. The band played a prominent role in the MidfWinter Concert presented January 24. A wide repertory of compositions ranging from The Bells of St, Marys to Auditorium Session was presented. 55 Continuing an annual cdstom, the instru- mentalists concluded their year with the Band Festival held on Julia Lamb Field. Resplendent in new black and orange uni- forms, the band made an appearance as one of ten bands participating in the Band Fes- tival at St. Marys on May lO. Seven retiring members of the band are Dick Melvin, Bob Bulle, Bob Lynch, John Maurer, Budd Maxson, Dale Harger, and Mary McMartin, Two additional majorettes were added this year making the total per- sonnel 62, There are 55 instrumentalists, three majorettes, two drum majcrs, and two color bearers under the capable direction of C. Friends, Romans and Countrymen gather in room 38 every third week to hold Inter Nos meeting. Consul Fred Whittaker presides over the group of Virgil and Cicero followers. At the annual Roman Banquet the young Latins don the customary toga. Their personal slaves wear the servile tunic. This year the guest speaker for the occasion was the Rev- rend J. A. Long. The entire evening was like a page from an old Roman book, complete with entertain- ers, typical foods served in Roman style and with Roman customs prevailing. Special guests were Mr. and Mrs. Lull, Mr. and Mrs. Craw- ford, and the Reverend and Mrs. Long. Each fall the seniors hold an initiation at which the neophytes are required to per- 66 form feats of skill proving their worthiness. After displaying their abilities satisfactorily, they are received into full membership. At the regular meetings, members of the club contend in Latin chorades, quizzes and cross word puzzles. The programs are planned to be appropriate to Roman activities of the season. ln the spring o farewell picnic is held for the departing companions. The officers for the year i945-46 were consul, Fred Whittaker, proconsul, Nancy Foster, scriba, Nancy Moritz, quaestor, Wayne Folke. Miss Esther Grant is sponsor of the organi- zation. The Science Club, which is a branch ofthe lxational Science Clubs of America, was or- ganized this year. The members meet every two weeks on Monday night in the science rooms, where they conduct chemical experiments. The purpose of a reserve cage squad is to give the younger boys, principally freshmen and sophomores, valuable game experience needed to play good varsity basketball. Coach McDermott's aim is to teach them young. lt is noticed that the Reserves didn't lare very well this season, but the Sidney reserve aggregation is one of the few teams in the valley that do not use any seniors and only a very few juniors on the squad. The reserve Jacketmen did not win very many games this past season, our many games were played in which the winner was not de- cided until the final seconds. A strong varsity squad is being built up gradually through these rugged contests. You can look to the reserves for good prospects. Intramural sports are sports played within the school by members of the school competing against each other. Basketball is the main intramural sport at Sidney High. lt is open to those boys who, for personal reasons, are unable to participate in varsity or reserve basketball. There are eight teams in the Intramural Cage League and each has a sponsor to coach it. This year the Faculty squad dropped out of the league and was replaced by the Junior l-li-Y team, whose sponsor is Mr. Seifert. The other teams and sponsors are the tournament champs, the Co-ops, Mr. Presser, sponsor, juniors, Andy Konz, junior class president, seniors, Mr. Hammann, sophomores, Mr. Geib, freshmen, Mr. Hammann, F. F, A, Mr. Slager, and the Senior Hi-Y, Mr, Wilson. This year the senior team took the loop lead title while the Co-op tive took the tournament championship, At the end of the season the drawings are held tor the annual tournament.
