I was so afraid by the pos- sible critics and all these eyes that will stare at me! Yes, I have been of a great interest for everybody, but it has been such a friendly in- terest. What a wonderful school is Sidney High! What a nice spirit is its! I was graduated from one of the strict French public schools for girls in Lycee, and how I have enjoy to work and have ac- tivities with Sidney High. I.ots of uses have surprised me here especially at the beginning of my stay among you, I remem- ber the first !'Hi!,' I received, , , Y and everyone making me start- get 'F led by this reetinff! , I rememier theofirst I Pep Club rally: It was or . Q, in September. fl could W not understand too much M ' English at that moment!! I H7 was in the corridor when suddenly I heard an awful big noise, and music, shoutings, screams, clapping hands . . .! Anx- ious, I wondered what it could be! It was not the Fourth of July! . . . I couldn't ask anybody because of my pronunciation, so I entered, discreet as a mouse, in the audi- torium, and I saw there boys and girls jumping, laughing: some in strange clothes, dancing on the stage: teachers laughing too, cheering I did not know whom! ssh i,,.k-T 'Q-L Of course. I thought, everybody here is crazy! .... A nd I stood there watching all this excite- ment. very embarrassed to not be in the same mood. One week after, I went too. as a Pep Club member to cheer my schoolmates, and to watch my first football game! fln France we use to play soccerj I have been smitten by all this enthusiasm during a game, by such a great community spirit! I have left for one year three younger brothers and one younger sister, but I have never been home- sick here. I have found here such another nice family. and such a lot of sweet friends! I was too a little afraid by the terrible winter here. but the sun shines so often, that it is really better than the winter in LePuy. the little town of twenty-five thousand inhabitants where I live in the hilly French southern-center part! I have learned here lots of new fields: and I have enjoyed to learn the way I didg I liked this lively activity that characterizes Sidney High. Myself, I was in Masque and Gavel Club. I played in senior play. participated in a speech contest. wrote some articles for the paper, and gave some little speeches about the life in my country. It has really been for me a well filled year here! Now I should like to tell you what I really wish. leaving you: I hope only to leave behind me the same wonderful remember that the one I will keep with me of Sidney, and more of Sidney High, 1958, of the wonderful and sweet people that constitute it! Maroon Cagers Score a 54.4 Game Average Starting the season slow, Sidney dropped the first two contests to North Platte and Sterling by respective scores of 42-61 and 46-64. The Maroons, sparked by a great defensive effort, defeated Chap- pell 50-48 for victory number one. The Sidney team then traveled to McCook where they lost a heartbreaker 40-41. After Christmas vacation, the Nlaroons trounced Alliance 72-46 but lost number four to Cheyenne, rated first in Wy'oming, and number five to Gering 50-69. On the home court Sidney met Gothenburg and Ron Gilbreath dumped in 42 points, a school record, as the Maroons won in over- time, 65-63. Sidney then ran into a three-game losing streak as Alliance stopped them 64-53, Ogallala won a hair-raiser 49-48, and Cheyenne clipped them 69-48. Then Kimball, too, hungry for a win, met Sidney and lost 72-53. February saw Sidney defeat Gering 57-55. Gering, the week before, had defeated previously unbeaten Ogallala. Two days later, the Nlaroons played Scottsbluff to a standstill before losing 45-53. Sidney then faced a losing streak that ended the season, falling to Cozad, 88-97, Ogallala 65-85, and Alliance 60-69 in tournament play. The season ended with the following percentages: Field goals, 352 out of 943-37Z. Free throws, 218 out of 447-491. Average points per game-Sidney 54.4, Opponents 60.0. Ronnie Gilbreath, Sidney ace, set the following records: single game score 42 against Gothenburg, individual scoring average, 420 in 17 games, 24.7 average, and single game away, 37 against Ogal- lala.
