' ' ' ' . . i the Junior-Senior Banquet, which was 5 3 Q . xr .7Al 0lftgA ik? M0106 Senior program day found the seniors looking back over the last half century. Scenes depicting various inventions, hard times, and entertainment were the highlights of the hour. The years were taken as decades with several key scenes for every ten years. Beauty queens made fashions very evident through the years with a Miss America for each decade revealing quite a contrast in styles. The first airplane, made by the Wright brothers, was flown in l9Ol by several daring senior boys, who also made parachuting popular. An entire family took a short trip across the stage in the first automobile to the tune of ln My Merry Oldsmobile. Bob Spindler, as narrator, gave the play by play descrip- tion ofa lively boxing match from the ringside. No black eyes, by the way. Reviewing entertainment features over the years, square dancing, the Charleston, and Al .lolson were found to be pop- ular. Remembering that times were not the best in the l93O's, a portrayal of the depression days was very dramatic, Since music has always played a very important part in our lives, several timely selections were played throughout the program with the entire senior class singing a popular song of the day, Goodnight, lrene at the end of the hour, Top to bottom: Ray Thomas as Al Jolson puts all he has into Mommy. Beauty queens, Jane Boyd and Natha Planck, display their charm backstage. A very distinguished lady is Ann Kokier in the flapper days. Lyle Mclrvin referees while DeLyle Bancroft and John Hard- en fight it out in a lively boxing match. . il. Q. Left to right, they are Jane Barnes, Jeanette Witters, Margie Copley, and Judy Bush. The first freshman assembly of the year was the well known initiation day assembly. Mother Goose was the theme. The program provided many laughs for the upper classmen and was a great success. Class elections were the next important step for the freshmen class, and the elections were successfully held. ln order that officers might be elected, it was necessary for the freshmen to learn the voting procedures for an election in SHS. The class elections were as well carried off as any in the school. The freshman program, No Suit For Bill, given dur- ing the second half of the school year, again supplied enter- tainment for the entire student body. The comedy provided good entertainment for all. Interesting numbers were pre- sented by members of the first year Spanish class and by freshman members of the school chorus. it if ' i i fi . The pep club under the new spon- sorship of Miss Dorothy Becker and Miss Renee Strom started out the be- ginning of a successful year by boost- ing its membership to 66. Officers chosen in the spring to take over the club's responsibilities for l95O-5l were Carol Golden, president, Marcelyn Dedrick, vice-president, Jo Connell, secretary, Ann Kokjer, treas- urer, Lois Willard, historian, Donna Steward and Phyllis Moody, point re- corders. Cheerleaders elected by the stu' dent body were Jo Connell and Lois Willard, seniors, Marcelyn Dedrick and Jeanne Livingston, juniors. Others who tried out were: Norma Schnell, Alber- ta Gentle, Cleo Kennedy, Donna Stew- ard, Delores Belieu, Ann Kokjer, and Marsha Planck. ln order to entertain the athletes at the annual athletic banquet, the club had many money m a k i n g schemes, such as selling game pra- grams and pencils of school colors. The pepsters for the first time fed the bas- ketball boys of both teams free of charge after a game and also spon- sored a sock hop the same evening, This was financed by taking over the juniors' duties of selling concessions at the game. March 30 marked the date of the pep club banquet which had The Morgue as the theme. The banquet was followed by the S club dance. The Sidney chapter ofthe national organization is active in its support of all major community activities, agricultural and others. Under their sponsor, Mr. Neuman, the boys have helped with the Cheyenne coun- ty fair, state wheat show, the Soil Conservation program, and the Noxious Weed program. To improve scholastic standing, the chap- ter encourages its members to take part in dis- trict and state contests. These include live- stock, poultry, grain, farm management, farm L4 accounts, and dairy management. To train for leadership, public speaking, and parliamentary procedure, contests are participated in at dis- trict events. FFA letters are awarded for achievement in vocational agriculture. ln addi- tion to the above, FFA foundation medals are awarded in public speaking, farm shop, and farm safety. A swine feeding demonstration cooperating with the Cheyenne county farmers non-stock association was also successfully completed. However, not all of the activities are of a serious nature, as the club sponsored an over- night fishing trip to Kingsley Dam, organized a basketball team and a Future Farmers of America and Future Homemakers of America picnic to Greenwood. Starting off against a strong Ster- V 33-'ll ling team, the Maroons showed great spirit and team work which ' Q, gave out the second quarter, resulting in a loss. The next game VS being Bridgeport, the fellows played their hearts out, over run- ning the Bulldogs I3-6, This game, which showed that good team work and stamina can come from a determined team, was one of the outstanding contests. The other challenges were handicapped by various injuries. Ogallala, a strong ball club, was surprised when the Maroons put on a new drive to tie the Indians l4 all. Again the Maroons went down to lose the re- maining games. Kimball, the last game, was really a hair raiser. The Maroons scored twice during the game but both were called back on penalties. The last four minutes were fatal when Kim- ball stepped across the line for a 6-O victory. 17 Sept I5 Sidney Sept 22 Sidney Cl ct cr Nov Nov Nov The coaching staff of Sidney high is shown here, left to right: Glen Ackerson, Don Burrows, Ray Maley, and Leo Shun-nan. The Sidney Reserves during the past six years have won 23 games, lost three and tied one and have scored SOO points to 192 for the oppopents. This gives Sidney an average per game of ZO while the opposition has averaged eight per game. The best of the six teams for offense was the 1950 team which averaged 28 points per game while the 1945 team had the best defense with an average of four points per game for the opponents.
