The Maroons outscored their opponents by a slim margin of 4 points by collecting l27 points to their opponents l23. The Maroons fielded their lightest team in the school's history. The average was 144 pounds per man. Despite their small size the Maroons suffered very few injuries. Always playing against larger opponents they overcame their opponent's advantage of weight by playing fast and hard football. After being defeated in their first game at Sterling, it was thought that the team would be lucky to win one game this year because of their ragged play in that game. Against Bridgeport the team's play improved and they played them on almost even terms. The victory went to Bridgeport by a slim margin of 6 points. The team began to improve and they burst into the win column by rolling over Chadron, a weak club in the conference. The Maroons made it 4 straight wins by downing Ogallala, Oshkosh, and Gering. Ogallala and Gering provided conference wins for the Maroons. A fast Chappell eleven handed the Maroons their worst defeat of the season. It was one of those days when everything went wrong for the Maroons. Kimball outlasted Sidney in the last game if the season and won in a 20 to I9 thriller. A win over Kimball would have given Sidney a share in the Panhandle Conference honors with Gordon. As it was the Maroons finished in a tie for third with Mitchell with o record of 3 wins and 2 losses. Coach Leo Shuman commented an the team, For being a small team it was a good team and it had the most fight and spirit of any team I have had at Sidney High School I think our best game was against Gering Because of a back iniury Melvin Davis was forced to check in after the Chadron game. He was replaced by Wayne Schnieder. This year's squad of twenty boys was a good evenly matched group and very regular in practice and game attendance according to Frosh Coach Ray Maley, who also states that the team is one of the best to ever wear the Frosh colors for S.H.S. These first year players showed a remarkable improvement as the season pro- gressed, winning nine of the twelve games on the schedule and climaxing a fine season by winning the championship of the Four County Tourney at Oshkosh in February. This is the sixth champion team and Ray Maley who coached the six teams ranks this squad as good as the best. So these Frosh join the list of three football reserve teams in '45, '47, and '49 and Frosh track squads in '47 and '48 who won titles as undefeated teams.
