'46 Track Team Sidney's tracksters made an excellent show- ing during the 1946 season by winning first place from ten schools in the lulesburg Invita- tional Meet. This was the first major track title won by the Maroons in recent years. New records were set by Bud Downs who ran the 440 in 54.7, and the relay team made up of Tim Curless, Bud Downs, Orville Rouillard, and Clarence Bonesteel who ran the 880 in l.38.9. Sidney also defeated Kimball 93-43. v-Q f-loltman, Mann, Cur- less, and Rouillard put forth a final burst of speed as they clear the low hurdles during track practice. Twirlers Phyllis Mahaffey, Phyllis Richardson, and Myrna Planck represented Sidney in the twirling sectiong While Pam Kinne and Muriel Story ranked high in the orchestra. Highlights of the year were the two-day clinic held here, directed by lames Iohnson, high school band director at Scottsbluff, Forty- five members from the Sidney band and ten first chair members from the Scottsbluff band participated in this event. The Sidney group is active in its support of all major community activities, agricultural and nonsagricultural. The club has taken an active part in the support of the Cheyenne County lunior Fair, the State Wheat Show, and the Cornhusker Caravan. Not all of the activities are of a serious na- ture. The club sponsored a fishing trip to Kingsley Dam for its members, organized a basketball team, held a pheasant and duck feed for the Freshmen, and also sponsored an all-school dance. Delbert Lessman was appointed Secretary of Qgriculture in the Presidents Cabinet of the student government. Raymond Sunderman represented the club in the District F. F. Q. Public Speaking Contest and was awarded second place, and the officers of the club also rated second place in the Parliamentary Pro- cedure Contest.
