Barbara Allen and Yankee Doodle depict earliest colonial civi- lization. Pioneers, ballad singers, teamsters and mountaineers sang, whistled and hummed Sweet Betsy from Pike and Down in the Val- ley. These songs were swept through the country by the voices of thousands of men and women. They made new songs, changed old ones and kept alive almost forgotten songs. The revolution, the west- ward movement, the gold rush, the building ofthe railroads and pres- .ent day life were truly kept alive by song. During the development and growth of our nation from infancy to maturity, music has always been present. This is also true in the pro- cess of development in the Sidney Central student. From early child- hood until starting school he sings London Bridge and Mary Had a Little Lamb. With the new experience of starting school comes the rhythm bands and as the student continues progressing so does his music. By the time he reaches fourth, fifth and sixth grades he is ready to participate in grade chorus and the operetta. The students now have reached a new phase of life, Junior High School. Music appreciation is taught to prepare the student for the music work in later years. Next is Senior High School, and with that comes Glee Club and Band. The freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors sing and play the top tunes and hit songs, the old school songs and their Alma Mater. From the child to the adult music is part of his education. The last of our high school journey is nearing and as we look for- ward to a new start in another direction, we cherish the thought that life is a song.
