DEBATING CLUB .llnnagcr Harvey Lerner Assisfmzt Richard Morrell Secretary Phyllis Sencabaugh Debating is undertaken when enough interest is shown. The purpose of the club is to help the development of logical thinking and argumentation. This year under the able leadership of Mr. Lalli, coach, and Harvey Lerner, manager, the club has been very active. The subject for debate this year was Resolved: That the United Nations now be revised into a federal world government. Among the schools that we have met in debate are Amherst. Clinton, Grafton,High School, and North High School of Wor- cester. The club also debated Milton Academy and St. John's and St. Peter's High Schools. The varsity team went to Portland. Maine, in March to participate in the New England Forensic League debating contest. They also entered a contest sponsored by Boston University. In April the club was represented in a tournament which was held at Grafton High School. The season has been very satisfying and the club has high hopes for next year. NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE President. . . . . . Richard Antoun Vice-President ...... Robert Jewers Corresponding Secretary Janet Mitchell Recording Secretary Phyllis Sencahaugh The National Forensic League has in the past year progressed far in its field of public speaking. Many activities of interest to both school and town have been undertaken and carried out to successful conclusion. New, active, and associate members have been admitted to the Forensic League. In March the Forensic Follies, a skit, was presented before the high school assembly, where it was received with great applause. Speakers from Shrewsbury were chosen to give a dis- play of forensic ability at the Northboro and Grafton High Schools and before various town organizations during the year. In March, and then again in April, the debaters and speakers -dramatic, humorous, oratorical. and extemporaneous-com- peted in the annual New England debating and speaking tourna- ments in Portland and Lewiston, Maine. In addition to the honors, speakers have won experience as well as gained genuine enjoy- ment. These trips provided a fitting climax for a successful year of Forensic League activities. 5 3
