After the 8000 mile mgfddgiruise to her homeport of Norfolk, Virginia, Shreveport began training for her first Medi- terranean cruise which began in January 1973 and ended in June 1973. Throughout 1974 and half of 1975, Shreveport was the flagship ofthe Caribbean Amphibious Ready Group and participated in various fleet exercises, occasionally with South American Forces. In July of 1975, she deployed back to the Mediterranean where she participated in a major NATO exercise involving British, Turkish and U.S. Navies. During the return trip to Norfolk in February 1976, the ship's flag bridge was destroyed by a forty foot wave off Cape Hatteras. In September 1979, Shreveportbegan another Mediterranean deployment where she com- pleted four major amphibious operations with various European allies. In September 1981, Shreve- port visited Cancun, Mexico to support President Ronald Reaganis participation in the North- South Economic Summit. e - I During a Mediterranean cruise that began in August 1982, Shreveportspent four months off the coast of Beirut, Lebanon. As a result of this operation, she received the Navy Unit Commen- dation and the Navy Expeditionary Medal. In late 1984, she received the Meritorious Unit Com- mendation for conducting mine clearing operations in the Red Sea in support of Operation IN- TENSE LOOK. From June 1990 to February 1991, Shreveport was deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM with Commander, Amphibious Squadron SIX embarked. Her involvement in this conflict helped to earn her the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy for Operational Readiness in January 1992. During a Mediterranean deployment in November 1993, Shreveport was assigned to Mogadishu, Somalia in support of Operation RESTORE HOPE. 1994 and 1995 saw Shreveport participating in Operation PROVIDE PROMISE in the Adriatic Sea by flying. video reconnaissance missions over Bosnia-Herzegovina utilizing the Pioneer UAV During this time. she also served in the first amphibious Partnership for Peace exercise in Bul- garia. From December 1995 to February 1996, Shreveport participated in Operations DENY FLIGHT, PROVIDE PROMISE. and JOINTIDECISIVE ENDEAVOR in the Adriatic sea. On October 3, 1997 N - ' ' . USS SHREVEPORT deployed for yet another Mediterranean cruise. While operating in the Black Sea Shreveport conducted a Chan e of Com d Q - - g man ceremony in Constanta. Rornanra on ll December. 1997.
