SADDAM HUSSEIN WAS GIVEN REPEATED WARNINGS FROM THE WORLD'S SUPERPOWERS TO WITHDRAW FROM KUWAIT. THESE WAR- NINGS FELL ON DEAF EARS, AS SADDAM HUS- SEIN DECLARED KUWAIT AS IRAQ'S 19TH PROV- INCE. NUMEROUS PEACE PLANS WERE PRESENTED, BUT SADDAM REFUSED EACH ONE. SADDAM PRESENTED HIS OWN PEACE PLANS WHICH HAD NUMEROUS CONDITIONS THE WORLD COM- MUNITY WAS TO MEET. PRESIDENT BUSH AN- SWERED THESE PEACE PLANS WITH A SIMPLE MESSAGE, WITHDRAW FROM KUWAIT UN- CONDITIONALLY OR FACE DIRE CONSE- QUENCES. SADDAM IGNORED THIS WARNING. THE UNITED NATIONS APPROVED ECO- NOMIC SANCTIONS DESIGNED TO FORCE IRAQ INTO WITHDRAWING FROM KUWAIT. HOWEV- ER, THESE SANCTIONS FAILED TO PRODUCE THE DESIRED RESULTS. THE UNITED NATIONS THEN APPROVED THE USE OF MILITARY FORCE TO OUST IRAQI FORCES FROM KUWAIT. A DEAD- LINE OF 15 IANUARY 1991 WAS SET FOR SAD- DAM TO WITHDRAW HIS FORCES OR FACE MILI- TARY ACTION. WHILE OPPOSING FORCES CONTINUED TO POSTURE IN KUWAIT AND SAUDI ARABIA, USS SHREVEPORT CONTINUED TO HONE ITS' AM- PHIBIOUS WARFIGHTING CAPABILITIES. THIS WAS DONE THROUGH A SERIES OF FOUR SEA SOLDIER EXERCISES WHICH WERE CONDUCTED ON THE BEACHES OF OMAN. TIME AND TIME AGAIN MARINES WERE PLACED ASHORE IN PREPARATION FOR WHAT EVERYONE CONSID- ERED TO BE INEVITABLE, AN AMPHIBIOUS LAND- ING ON THE BEACHES OF KUWAIT. A LAST MINUTE CHANCE AT PEACE WAS OF- FERED WITH THE U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE AND IRAQI FOREIGN MINISTER HOLDING TALKS IN GENEVA. HOWEVER, THESE TALKS PROVED FRUITLESS. 17 THE 15TH OF JANUARY PASSED WITHOUT EANEARE. HOWEVER, A DAY AFTER SADDAM IG- NORED THE DEADLINE TO WITHDRAW, THE MOST DEVASTATING AIR ASSAULT IN HISTORY BEGAN WITH THE BOMBING OF BAGHDAD. THE WAR BEGAN AT 0300 PERSIAN GULF TIME, WHEN A TOMAHAWK CRUISE MISSILE, TARGETED AGAINST BAGHDAD, WAS LAUNCHED FROM THE USS WISCONSIN OPER- ATING IN THE CENTRAL PERSIAN GULF. THIS AIR CAMPAIGN LASTED FOR SIX WEEKS WHILE COALITION GROUND FORCES READIED THEMSELVES TO ENTER COMBAT. WHILE THE AIR CAMPAIGN CONTINUED, USS SHREVEPORT WAS ORDERED INTO THE PER- SIAN GULF. AFTER ONLY A FEW DAYS IN THE SOUTHERN PERSIAN GULF THE ORDER CAME TO HEAD NORTH. USS SHREVEPORT WAS ORDERED TO AN OPERATING AREA 100 NAUTICAL MILES SOUTHEAST OF KUWAIT. IRAQ, HAD LONG SINCE REALIZED THAT AN AMPHIBIOUS LANDING WAS IN THE OEEING, AND HAD COMMITTED OVER FIVE DIVISIONS TO THE KUWAITI COAST. THESE FORCES WHICH AMOUNTED TO OVER 00,000 PERSONNEL, WERE INTENT ON COUNTERING AN AMPHIBIOUS AS- SAULT. THE COASTAL WATERS OF KUWAIT AND IRAQ WERE ALSO MINED WITH OVER 1100 MINES IN AN EFFORT TO PREVENT ANY PLANNED AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT. AS THE GROUND WAR COMMENCED ON 24 FEBRUARY, USS SHREVEPORT CONTINUED T0 CONDUCT OPERATIONS IN THE NORTHERN PERSIAN GULF, APPROACHING TO WITHIN 30 NAUTICAL MILES OF KUWAIT. IRAQI TROOPS HELD FAST IN THE BELIEF THAT AN AMPHIB OU5 LANDING WAS CLOSE AT HAND. THEN, IN A MATTER OF ONLY 100 HCIURS' THE GROUND WAR WAS OVER. SADDAM HJS. SEIN TROOPS, FROM THE ELITE REPUB- CAN GUARD UNITS, TO THE ORDINARY FOOT SOL- DIER, HAD FELT THE FORCE OF THE COALITION GROUND FORCES. AN AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT WAS NEVER NEEDED. HOWEVER, THE MERE PRESENCE OF THI AMPHIBIOUS TASK GROUP OFF 'HE COAST OI KUWAIT KEPT 80,000 IRAQI FORCES IN THE POSI- TIONS ALONG THE COAST, UNAB-E TO ENGAGI ADVANCING COALITION FORCES. AS ACTIVITY IN IRAQ AND KJWAIT BEGAN TO DIMINISH, USS SHREVEPORT WAS DE- TACHED FOR WELL DESERVED L BERTY IN THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. FOL-OWING THIS PORT VISIT, THE LONG TRANSIT BACK HOME COMMENCED. USS SHREVEPORT RETURNED TO NORFOLK ON 17 APRIL 1991. AFTER 250 DAYS AT SEA WITH ONLY 23 DAYS IN PORT, NORFOLK WAS A WEI- COME SIGHT. ku i ii' Az, I Am 4 I I Haze Gra and Underwa -..f-- ' ' ,...,. r., .J ' I . v'.--- ' - -7 - ..- '14 ,:.:.-, --- rw -0---A vp N -- .n4..-Q ' ,, i W Bl? X A THE SNIPES LAMI-ENT Now each of us, from time to time, has gazed upon the sea, And watched the warships pulling out to keep this country free. And most of us have read a book, or heard a lusty tale About the men who sail these ships through light- ning, wind, and hail. But there's places within each ship that legend fails to teach. lt's down below the waterline, it takes a living toll- A hot metal living hell that sailors call the Hole It houses engines run by steam that makes the shafts go round, A place of fire, noise, and heat that beats your spirits down. Where boilers like a hellish heart, with blood of angry steam, Are molded gods without remorse, are nightmares in a dream. Whose threat that from the fires' roar is like a living doubt, That any minute would with scorn escape and crush you out. Where turbines scream like tortured souls, alone and lost in hell, As ordered from above somewhere they answer every bell. The men who keep the fires lit and make the en- gines run, Are strangers to the world of night and rarely see the sun. They have no time for man or God, no tolerance for fear, Their aspect pays no living thing the tribute of a tear. For there's not much that men can do that these men haven't done, Beneath the decks, deep in the hole, to make the engines run. And every hour of every day they keep the watchin hell, For if the fires ever fail, their ship's a useless shell. When ships converge to have a war upon an angry sea, The men below just grimly smile at what their fate might be. They're locked below like men foredoomed, who hear no battle cry, lt's well assumed that, if they're hit, the men below will die. For every day's a war down there, when gauges all read red, Six hundred pounds of heated steam can kill you mighty dead. So if you ever write their sons, or try to tell their tale, The very words make you hear a fired furnace'swail. And people as a general rule don't hear of men ol steel, So little's heard about the place that sailor's call the 'hole.' But I can sing about this place and try and make you see, The hardened life of men down there, cause one of them is me. l've seen the sweat-soaked heroes' fight, in super' heated air, To keep their ship alive and right, though no one knows they're there. And thus they'll fight for ages on till warships sail H0 more, Amid the boilers mighty heat and turbines hellish roar. So when you see a ship pull out to meet a Wiifllke foe, I Remember faintly if you can The Men Who Sail BC' ow. - Author UnlU10W I I . DIVISIO D HT:-IE ELITE ..,,,.-aa.. . Shannon O'Connor Brownie Troop 1197 Clearwater, Florida Ianuary 18, 1991 Dear Son and Shipmates, h II is dlfigil-LEIECIXHQSIIO Sift allqmy thoughts together so I can put into words OW Vefi' 3 are Ort G jobs you are doing. I don't mean gust Daddy and me.. . I mean all of us who understand the importance of resolve commit- ment, love of country and dignity . . . not simply the dignity of your country but your own personal dignity. We are overwhelmed at the success of missions thus far, but we know too that there will be a darker side as well. More and more we are seeing and hearing pilots interviewed and young men on the ships. It is unbelievable that this is truly happening and it wouldn't surprise me at all if it is as unbelievable to you. Often I find myself almost sleepwalking as if this is a nightmare and not reality at all. But I know this, your country was not the cause of this nightmare, and knows that aggression must be stopped or a world war might ensue. As terrible as this involvement is now, it would be far worse later and the destruction to your own country would be very real. America's future has been bettered be- cause of each and everyone of you, from the captain of your ship right on down to you seamen recruits. I know that most of your parents wish they could do ' W 't ra this for you and would want to trade places to assure your satety. e mus p y instead and make our gratitude known to you. American flags are starting to be waved in front of homes and although we fear for all of you, we are so proud, so very proud. There are some demonstra- ' I ' h' k- tions for peace. I would be demonstrating too except nobody who is tru y t in ing accepts peace at any price . In our personal lives as well as our military lives . . x . l must stand up and be a champion for what we believc in. Our country was we made a commitment, as well as all those nations allied in the United Nations ' th a ression In day to day living as well, simply acceptance just so against e gg . you don't make waves makes for a very weak human being. It is true of coun- tries too. I know you all must be very afraid and very tired. I also know that you contin- ' I ue to do what you must do, despite the hardships. Truly each of you are rea heroes. You know, l've been wearing my navy sweatshirt a lot and yesterday so many people were aware of why I was wearing it and they wished me and my family well. It is as if we here at home have formed a circle and are holding hands and praying as we stand together asking the Lord to help us get this finished 'th as soon as possible and with as least pain to all as is possible. wi From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you all.
