While supporting helo detachments from HMM-264 and serving as a landing platform for all helo assets in the MARC., the Air Department accumu- lated over 2,000 take-offs and landings and provided over 120,000 gallons of IP-5 to aircraft and boats and 9,000 gallons of MOGAS to small boats and Ma- rine vehicles during the deployment. Whether receiving supplies via VER- TREP, conducting night deck landing qualifications, or embarking marines from BLT 2X8 or MSSG-26 for ship to shore movement, the flight deck crew performed their mission professionally and without a single mishap. Routinely spending 10-11 hours at flight quarters, the flight deck crew was often re- quired to land helos right through Sunday holiday routine. On 1 July 1982, MSSG 54 was redesignated MSSG 24. On 5 May 1985, MSSG-24 embarked for Beirut, Lebanon as part of Landing Force Sixth Fleet 2-85, in support of the Multi-National Force. While serving as part of the United States contingent of the Multi-National Force, Lebanon, the MSSG was tasked with providing combat support and intemal camp security, and with implemen- ting several civic action programs primarily local population inoculations and limited construction. Following the tragic bombing of Headquarters, Battalion Landing Team 118, on 22 October 1985 in Beirut, the MSSG spearheaded the rescue and salvage operation. During this trying period, the MSSG executed its mission with proficiency and professionalism. Contrary to previous practice, MSSG was not deactivated upon its return from Feirut. fFormerly each MSSG was activated 60 days prior to the deployment.l ln 1985 the Second Force Service Support Group established three standing MSSG commands to support Commanding General, MSSG Marine Force, Atlantic in any assigned combat service support mission. On 1 March 1986, MSSG-24 was redesignated MSSG-26b to coincide with that of the MAU it supported. MSSG-26 built on its base ofdedication and experience to become the first MSSG to support a Special Opera- tions Capable MAU, the 26th MAU4SOCl during its deployment with the Sixth Fleet from November 1985 to June 1986. lt deployed again from January to July 21987, and was redesignated as a MEU Service Support Group on 5 February 1986 when the MAU was redesignated as a MEU. lt deployed again from March to August 1988 and ls currently deployed with 26th MEUQSOCJ. Unit honors eamed by MSSG-26 include the Plavy Unit Commendation with Bronze Star, the Meritorious Unit Citation and the Marine Corps Expeditionary Streamer with Bronze Star.
