T H E M E IN VIEW or THE PAST ws ARE BUILDING TOWARD THE FUTURE ThIs year we 1nItIated the crest of TheophIlIs Short Into our school We used the crest on the cover of our yearbook The crest made us pause a moment to wonder about the ShortsvIlle before our ttme We dId a bIt of research and found many facts whtch we collected for the theme of our 1947 HI Lo One hundred and ftfty nIne years ago In 1788 a road butlt from Canandatgua to a landIng on the Outlet led to the foundIng of Man chester Houses were buIlt along the Shortsvtlle s1de of thIs road be cause of avatlable water power On June 20 1808 Matn Street was latd out On the south s1de ltved the Short and Carey famIlIes The Brew ster Buck Harrts Cooper Ftsh CraIn and Persons homes were on the north In 1823 East Avenue was formed and In 1825 came Water Street November 3 1865 Peacock 1H1ghl and Newton Grove Streets were buIlt Booth Street opened November 14 1872 and our vtllage was Incorporated In 1899 48 years ago The Short famtly of the south Slde of Matn Street were our orIg1nal set tlers Mr Theophtlus Short havIng butlt hIs saw mIll here In 1804 ThIs was sItuated on the east Slde of the Outlet ln 1818 Wllllam GrImes buI1t a woolen mtll and In 1817 the Jones paper mIll was buIlt Thts mIl1 produced the paper for the ftrst edItIon of the Mormon BIble In 1829 HIram l.. and Calvtn P Browns Emprre uraIn DrIll plant In 1855 the Sheffer Plow Company the Amertcan Seed Ing Machrne Company In 1903 and fmally the Papec Machtne Company of Ltma In 1908 are a few of the plants establlshed here durtng the many 'years The Champron Hay and Gram Unloaders were Invented by Gar Maln and Park Streets Here you see a ptcture of the VanS1ck1e home as 11 stands today TurnIng from Shortsvtlle s prosperous buslnesses we vtew the popula tIon ln 1889 when the vIllage was Incorporated there were about 1 100 nd In 1893 our trustees were J M Stoddard C M SISCO E P Babcock E D Mather and C H Davrson vlllage clerk The ftrst rel1g1ous organIzatIon was the PresbyterIan Sunday School In 1857 March 1860 was the completton date of the bulldtng St DomInIc s the second farth to arrIve was buIlt on Sheldon Street and dedrcated In 1877 by the Rev BIshop MCOUH1d ln 1900 the congre gatton proved too great for the small church so a fund was ralsed and the new edIfIce butlt on the lot In West Marn Street In 1884 the Methodtst EpIscopal Church was ftntshed and dedtcated wIth the Rev Btngu as pastor ln 1807 the fIrst school house was founded on the farm of Elam Dewey and the fIrst dIstr1ct school began In 1811 But Ah' Prtendsl In 1886 a large beauttful Unton School was erected The hrstory book says Shortsvtlle has every rIght to be proud of IIS admtrable htgh school Serrous thought IS beIng gtven to centrallzatton wIth Manchester Th1s along Wllh the exchange of puptls for sub1ects IS creattng a frrendly bond between the Twtn CIIIGS Wtth a vIeW to the past progress we look to the future prospertty and enlargement of our lItt1e hamlet Here 1S my pleasure most l have ltved And call my home James S1111 U O - .
