. . The SENIOR BAND . . The S.H.S. Band has made for itself this year an almost unbelievable rec- ord, climaxed by winning the highest honor rating at the National Regional Contest in New York City on May 27. Starting out last Fall with a very early and fine concert, the musicians, in true professional style, practically hibernated in their penthouse, Band Loft, during the Winter, digging deep into fundamentals of music, finally emerg- ing this Spring to blaze a trail of glory that will long be remembered by our school and town. The ball started rolling with an inspired concert here in the school during the last week of April, Soon afterwards the Band went to Canandaigua and scored first and highest of Class C entrants and getting a tremendous ovation from the audience. Two weeks later, they popped up again over in Snyder, N. Y., to win the highest rating of any competing band in the Western State Finals, May l3. Then things started moving . . . the town setting a real rec- ord of raising the full On to New York quota three days ahead of time, while the Band matched it by learning the National-required number from :tart to finish in less than eight days. ln New York, the Band had the singular privilege of rehearsing in Sym- phony l-fall of Carnegie Hall, that famous building where the world's finest symphony orchestras broadcast. Other high-lights of the trip were trips to the World's Fair, the Liner Bremen, sightseeing tours, etc. The record set by this group goes something like this: Won highest rat- ing at Canandaigua Sectional contest, competing against l6 bands. Vfon first rating in the Western State Finals, which included 63 entries. Won first rating in National Regionals, which included lO6 entries in New York State contests alone, as well as representatives from other States in this region. We point with great pride to one of our solo cornetists, Ann Stoddard, who has proved that she has that rare ability to climb to the top and stay there. For the third successive year, Ann has won the National Harp Solo Championship, as well as many enthusiastic tributes from the Iudges. The secret of this successful record is just one thing: Hard work, and the Band members have showed that they can and have done plenty of that, thereby filling many a page in scrapbooks, to be lived over in the years to come. The Hi-Lo Staff here wishes to express its appreciation to Mr. McKerr, for his very fine work in producing a National Champion Band. Through Mr. McKerr's hard work and excellent musical ability, the Band has proven itself.
