Instead the English Department's aim this year was to teach all Short- ridge students the four basic Language Arts skillsg reading, speaking, listening, and writing. Through the Communications Club and Quill and Scroll, two English Department clubs, Shortridge students were able to reach further into English than the text books or class- rooms could take them. As Mrs. Jean Whitcraft, head of our English Department says, Here in the English Depart- ment we want to make the whole world more vital and vi- brant to the Shortridge student through their language. an-on-calf' '-Iinngull I ,,.....--n--------- - 9' if--ql.' . 4. lf 2' . -w 1 X ,. - - -tt, -1 . .- J' rv- qw ' . . , . .., Ms. Barry provides her third period English class with test booklets for the Sophomore l.Q. test. 15 What does an enthusiastic new Department Head plus a staff full of energetic and lively teachers equal? The Shortridge Math Department! This past year Shortridge was lucky enough to have as its Math Department Head, Mrs. Sandra Al-Amin. Mrs. Al-Amin says that the goal of the Math Department is to demonstrate why it is important and relev- ant to take math and how learn- ing math will be useful in everyday life after the comple- tion of high school. The Department's hope was to create a positive image for itself and encourage more student interest and participation. It was also planning to start a Math Club during the second semester. Allen Sutherland. This year two new programs, Spanish conversa- tion and explatory Latin were added. Special Government was taught by Mr. Rocky Grissmore and Special Eco- nomics by Mr. Bill Morgan. About fifteen students were en- rolled in each of these classes. A new teacher Mrs. Lyons was added to the staff. The Science Technology class was ex- panded to a full year. This class, along with the Naturalist Club, repaired the inner Court- yard as a science project. The Naturalist Club was sponsored by Mrs. Sue Brown. Another addition was the purchase of 10 of the 30 calculators projected for the Science Department. According to Miss Van Horn, the purpose of the calculators was to give students more time to study and less time figuring out answers. More men than in any previous years were electing to take both the basic and ad- vanced Foods classes. ln addi- tion to improving food prepara- tion abilities, instructors en- couraged development of those personality skills most valuable in food service employment. A December Principal's luncheon held in Charity Dye Library gave the Department's students an opportunity to exercise their ac- cumulated skills in food service and preparation. While the Foods classes were absorbed in the culinary arts, clothing students displayed their accomplishments at the faculty Christmas Tea and competed for prizes at a spring style show sponsored by the Indiana Federation of Clubs. Mr. Greg Allen, a Ball State graduate, was the new woods instructor. Mr. Ford Fiatcliff moved in to take over the Graphic Arts lab. Although the program at Shor- tridge was non-vocational, the instructors focused on trying to train the students in the basic knowledge of industrial processes in our society, ac- cording to Mr. Ratcliff. Aside from providing a practi- cal educational experience, the Industrial Arts Department served every student at Shor- tridge. A highlight of this past year was the revival of the stage band. Mr. Leonard Behling, Music De- partment Head, lead the various band classes throughout a suc- cessful year. Mr. John Medjeski was in charge of the orchestra, which performed for the Christmas Concert, as well as other pro- grams. Frank Parrish demonstrates his seri- ous study of music. NCTEWOFZTHY CHANGES IN VOCAL MUSIC Vocal Music at Shortridge underwent two changes in 1976-77. The biggest change was a shift in teachers. Mr. Phil Rogers left and Mr. Myron El took his place as director of choirs. The second change was the addition of a new choir. The New Establishment , as the choir was called, specialized in rock and soul music. Madrigals - Anita Slater, Tracy Lisenbee, Stephanie Davis, Eric Strickland, Kalista Swift. STUDENTS ARE TAKIN' CARE CF BUSINESS Numerous classes of clerical study provided Shortridge with an excellent department of business education. Courses like clerical office practice, business machines, and record keeping helped students pre- pare for jobs after high school. Students planning a business career followed a special four year program. This schedule was carefully planned, begin- ning with Careers I and con- tinuing through advanced courses of accounting and record keeping. Practice makes perfect is Diane WiIson's motto as she works on im- proving her typing skills. Also new this year was Modern Health, the new health text- book. Mr. Charles Fitzgerald, department head, said l think the quality of health classes has improved greatly with the new book and teacher aids. The physical education classes EDUCATION and its affairs underwent no great changes. Phys. Ed. was offered over two semesters. Students who wanted to con- tinue with Phys. Ed. had the option of being student lead- ers' in their third semester. The Health and Physical Ed. Department was a basically sta- ble department, improving its methods of educating. Two school records were broken in the 880 yard relay and the 440 yard dash. The spectacular 880 yard relay team provided a new school record with an incredi- ble time of 1:29.3. Graduates Mike Green, Wendell Hall, John Smith, and Wayne Hamilton were the members of the 880 relay team. With a time of 49.1 seconds, Mike Green again broke his record in the 440 yard dash. After a slow start, Sa- tan's arose to defeat Avon and Wood twice under the coaching of lVlr. John Haynes. Junior Dean Trimpe led the team with a .303 batting aver- age. They finished the season with a 16-5 record and were the runner-ups in the City and Sectional Meets. Most of the girls on the team are graduating seniors but the experienced reserve team, with a record of 10-1, will be ready for next years rough season. M, VCLLEYBALL 2ND IN CITY GROWTH IIVIPROVES SOCCER Over the past years, the Soccer Club has progressed from a group of friends kicking a ball around in a lot to a team which placed second in the city. There is a growing interest in soccer throughout the state, city, and especially at Shortridge itself. The team roster almost doubled in a year's time. To deal with this influx of players, the Soc- cer Club had a new sponsor, Mr. Stanley lrwin. Mr. Irwin played soccer in St. Louis and helped the team to become more organized. The soccer team had several outstanding players last year. Starting goalie, David Harper, made tremendous flying saves, Parisien exchange students, Francois Gianola and Pierre Labejof, mystified the other soccer teams with their ball control. All in all the soccer team had a very powerful year. Top - Tom Yau stays alert as the play comes to him. Far left -Dante Ven- tresca struggles for control of the ball in this close-in action. TENNIS TEAM REAL WINNERS Once again the Blue Devil Ten- nis Team was the pace setter. During the month-long regular season, starting September 2, the racquet men mowed down twelve opponents, while only being faced with two defeats. In the city tourney, the Satans came within two points of re- peating last years over-all team championship performance. Three Shortridgers won indi- vidual City Championship hon- ors. They were Dan Beck, number one singles, and Bod Smith and Joe McLaughlin number one doubles. Andy McLaughlin capped runner-up singles honors, and Mitch Sat- terthwaite came in third, giving Shortridge a 1-2-3 sweep of singles competition. it 2 ,. a E I 45,92 , i , ,, M..,,,..w ..,,-fb..-, - , f , 'ii if D 74 -Q. 4 . 5 Wifi 6 ka ,.y5g?Zeg,-?5:,o' Easy? qw v gap? .J 'ggi rf- ff' +'e'.+ 2 ' tw.-,011 4 ' J. .- ,. pp, ,.,,,,,o4,92oof?ooooo' . 4' o -i. .--,.. f ff' li- T -. They also lacked a home gym which would have promoted greater school spirit. They proved themselves to be one of the city's most powerful ball clubs as they defeated most of the local schools. Leading free thrower was Del- bert Akers. He, along with Wil- lis Jackson and David Barlow, kept fans dazed with their quick ball handling. Seniors, Clinton Polk and Danny Sullivan pro- vided desired points in times of need. Joe Ward and Daniel Bar- low were the first and second leading scorers on the team. Their record in the regular season competi- tion was 3-4, while they finished 5th, 3rd, and 4th in the Central, Palestine, and Tipton invita- tional tourneys. The squad was plagued by inexperience, as there were only 3 seniors along with 30 underclassmen. Out- standing grapplers were Albert Musgrove at 105 lbs., and Wayne Rainey, who, at 200 lbs., wrestled heavyweight against competition up to 300 lbs. The future looks bright , said Coach Wright. ADMINISTRATION g ig . . I . A X I 2 2 f Like every well run outfit, Shor- tridge has top flight leaders. Principal Benjamin Johnson's say in matters dealing with ac- tivities and funds helped to keep Shortridge active. In his fourth year as chief adminis- trator his main responsibility was with public relations - keeping teachers, students, par- ents, and the school board in tune with each other. Vice-principal, Donald Oldham, handled all business matters and school personnel such as the security guards, cafeteria workers, deans, and custodi- ans. The other vice-principal, Donald King, had under his au- spices the jobs of scheduling and curriculum planning. Mr. King also took responsibility for summer school. They showed additional spirit by winning the Spirit Wand at the Homecoming game. The Class of '78 had numerous bakesales and held a canned food drive in December. The major activity of this class was Junior Vau- deville. Poor weather delayed the date of the production to March, but with the help of class sponsors, Miss McNeil and Mrs. Taylor, it was a suc- cess. The juniors finished the year with prospective ideas for their Senior year. SOPHOIVIOFZE CCUNCIL The Class of '79 started off the year by selling Homecoming Mums. Mrs. Nolke, the class sponsor, joined forces with the sophomores to produce the second place homecoming float. The theme for the float was Burn the Braves. Early in the second semester the class received an additional sponsor, Mr. Allen. He attended the bakesales that the sophomores produced. They earned money for special projects for their upcoming Junior year. FRESH MAN CCUNCIL No one can say that the fresh- men didn't have spirit. For the Homecoming festivities they contributed a float with the theme, Boil the Braves. The frosh also won the pompon contest. Under the direction of Mrs. Law, their sponsor, the Class of '80 successfully car- ried off a bakesale, and they looked forward to 1978 when they would be sophomores. 137 -G.-1-A , -4 S 92,1 , Q- .as , -X A 'sl 'xg 0 1 1 0 xr J' lfkixilir Viv: - Q S 'hx WS an lla 5 4 ,. if 'Weis Nix ' if i 1fg g' xi3u.....1J11,'5f..J'Qf aiLf X F A MlLT,..jf,,,,5x Q lL,,, i JL? lL i QL.,,eL,lLl 393 VW' QL Jak L, L -3 Lw Jf-Q-3 Nur V A-332-Q..l--Q 'lf 5-L ll.
