V-va. 5-fhase Electives are really great! This year the English department started a new Iunior-Senior electives program. Under the direction of Mrs. lean Whitcraft, department head, the electives allowed a chance for variety in the traditional Iunior and Senior English courses. The new courses were designed and written by members of the English department. They gave the students a chance to study in-depth one segment of the English language. The courses ranged from Black Literature to Mythology and from Film Criticism to Pre-College Grammar. They included Bible Literature, Career English, Creative Writing, Critical Thinking, Developmental Reading, Drama, How To Put Your Thoughts On Paper, Language, Mass Media, Poetry, Humor, Iournalism, journalism correspondence, Science Fiction, Short Story, Speech and Speed Reading. The traditional English 5 was also offered for those who were interested. The student reactions to the electives were very favorable. Freshmen and Sophomores took a new approach to the English Language through a new series of books. This very modern approach to reading and grammar has stirred a new interest among the students. Seven new Agnvl tlv D giziglg gl Ivfzf teachers added a new light to the Engl ish department. I I g Bible Literature opens up many hidden facts relating to religion. Here Larry Lunsford learns it didn't really snow on the first Christmas. Pausing between filmstrips, Miss Rutan's Film Criticism class enjoys a few moments rest and a good laugh. I2
