Last summer, a new program was begun in which students could take swim- ming or tennis for one-half credit, in place of one semester of physical educa- tion. 0f the twenty-five students enrolled in swimming at Riverside Pool, all re- ceived their beginners permits and six achieved advance permits. The tennis program, produced five winners in the Park Department's com- petition. ln the fourteen-year-old division, Mary Branson won the girls singles and Rita lVlcClendon and Pam Jackson won the girl's doubles. Kathy Campbell won the sixteen-year-old division title before teaming with Vanita Banks for the doubles award in the same division. Thir- ty-two students took tennis in all, fifteen in the intermediate section, four'in the advanced bracket and twenty-five beginners. Mr. Coleman, Vice Principal, stated that the program was very successful and plans are being made for its con- tinuation next summer. Posed on the diving board, Avis Banks appears ready to take off in swim classes held at Riverside. Vanita Banks won the doubles in tennis. Here she shows one of her many good drives.
