History Challenges Students To Read, Study Under the new leadership of Thomas Payne, the history department con- tinued its goal of enlivening history every day. To keep abreast of the times, U.S. History and Government and Economics students subscribed to such current affairs publications as TIME, U.S. NEWS and WORLD REPORT, and THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. Books and maps dealing with recently de- veloped areas in history provided a new approach to familiar courses. The presentation of world history changed through the use of a new textbook that stressed general concepts instead of specific facts. New psychology texts modernized that course by making it more scientific. One of the more visibly noticeable changes in the department was the physical arrangement of the reference room. Larry Burdick and Mr. Payne de- vised a plan to eliminate the con- gestion there by forming two separate cage lines, one for U.S. history and the other for world history. 6 Wu -.O mf, IW ,af TOP-Roving around the reference room, Larry Burdick records attendance and supervises history students.
