High in importance among the activities which make up the learning community that is Shortridge are the extracurricular clubs. It is by participating in them that pupils broaden their interests, learn to share experiences and help others, and develop broadening avocational interests for the future. Departmental clubs offer pupils an oppor- tunity to get together with others and carry their interests in academic subjects beyond classroom work. Among them We find such or- ganizations as Hi-Pi, Math Club, and Mu Alpha Theta, the three math clubs, Le Cercle Fran- cais, Hebrew, German, Spanish, SPQR, the lan- guage clubsg Physical Science Clubg and many others. Service clubs offer an opportunity to learn good citizenship through the practice of com- munity service. Student Board, Girls' League, Key Club, Newcomers, and the Overseas Club are representative organizations in this cate- gory. Hobby clubs give pupils a chance to get to- gether With others with the same avocational interests for discussion, development, and proj- ects. Typical are Chess, Great Books, Footlights, Stamp and Coin, and Fiction. Then there are the honor clubs for recogni- tion of special achievement: National Honor Society fgrades and citationslg Lettermen's Cathleticslg Quill and Scroll fjournalisml, and National Thespian Society idramaj. The clubs of Shortridge are many and varied -as rich and varied as is the schoo1's broad curriculum. Those we have named are only representative of the large total. 7
