We remember those who helped to make und keep the Shortridge tradition. cz tradition zrhic-Iz has known teachers who gave of fhC7lZS6'll'CS for the good of the school and its students. A sparkling conversationalist, a stimulating teacher, a gay companion, a good friend-these help to typify Miss Margaret Montgomery. Her friends-and they were many-could testify to her originality, her love for beauty, her interest in anything new, her tact, her wonderful com- panionship. Truly our lives are brighter for having known her vibrant personality. All Shortridgers mourn the loss of such L1 vital, intelligent, versatile, sincere person as was Miss Ruth Lewman. Sympathetic to stu- dents with problems, she initiated and spon- sored remedies. Alert and interested in many different things, she seemed to have an in- huustable fount of enthusiasm: she inspired through example. We shall miss her. 97 ww, in nf C K ' x pl'-H 'X V XY' , , sy 1 A 1 vw' 4 A 1 . 'W' Q.. 'L-' 4 - 2 , L f, Qs A f '4 ' ww A ' I 7? V . High in importance among the activities which make up the learning community that is Shortridge are the extracurricular clubs. It is by participating in them that pupils broaden their interests, learn to share experiences and help others, and develop broadening avocational interests for the future. Departmental clubs offer pupils an oppor- tunity to get together with others and carry their interests in academic subjects beyond classroom work. Among them We find such or- ganizations as Hi-Pi, Math Club, and Mu Alpha Theta, the three math clubs, Le Cercle Fran- cais, Hebrew, German, Spanish, SPQR, the lan- guage clubsg Physical Science Clubg and many others. Service clubs offer an opportunity to learn good citizenship through the practice of com- munity service. Student Board, Girls' League, Key Club, Newcomers, and the Overseas Club are representative organizations in this cate- gory. Hobby clubs give pupils a chance to get to- gether With others with the same avocational interests for discussion, development, and proj- ects. Typical are Chess, Great Books, Footlights, Stamp and Coin, and Fiction. Then there are the honor clubs for recogni- tion of special achievement: National Honor Society fgrades and citationslg Lettermen's Cathleticslg Quill and Scroll fjournalisml, and National Thespian Society idramaj. The clubs of Shortridge are many and varied -as rich and varied as is the schoo1's broad curriculum. Those we have named are only representative of the large total. 7 CROWDER, CONSTANCE ANN-Sr. Council: Sr. play comm.: Student Board: Girls' League: Vaudevllle act chairman: Jr. policy, Prom comm.: Frolic: Jr. prom queen candidate: Com- mencement usher: Echo agent: Annual, Christmas Echo: Booster, Freshman Booster, FTA, History, Le Cercle Francais 1pres.p, Naturalist, True Blue clubs: National Honor Society: Biology award. Our curriculum in the field is of recognized excellence, and the interest finds outlet in many group musical organizations which offer not only regular school credit but also extra- curricular activities. The names of these groups are self-descriptive- The Marching Band, Orchestral Band, A Cap- pella Choir, Madrigal Singers, Choral Club, Girls' Concert Choir, Girls' Ensemble, Orchestra. Through these organizations Shortridge learns and practices music, and our talent has become widely known throughout Indiana. James Calvert instructs an instrumental music pupil in one of Shortridgels new music rooms, cz part of the new fourth floor addition. 8 gn 'K Y' Y. 1 A - N- -, I . ai 'X ea - vw- -.wg - Q, -f: '!,' - ' 53. .. 2 Y x 4 113- x I,-p.. Dick Ittner and Dick Myers arrange another addition in one of SHS's trophy cases . . . Eager fans enjoy the sun and warm weather at one of the afternoon football' games. Let's go, big team! The chant of the booster section cheers Shortridge teams to victoryg be the sport football, basketball, baseball, Wres- tling, tennis, golf, cross country, or track, SHS athletes have been a factor to reckon with in local and state competition. The boys who wear the block S have earned it with effort and hard Work under capable freshman, reserve, and varsity coaches. School spirit, that added extra. has helped our teams win many honors. Athlet- ics at Shortridge is not confined to an inter- school level. Physical education instruction is given to all, and intramural competition is set up in sports from volleyball to bowling, ping- pong to baseball. This year the seniors presented Old Doc for their class play, and it was hailed the semes- ter's hit. Every class took part in the Junior Vaudevilleg the five acts chosen for the show presented a spectacle of color, song, and dance for audiences at four performances. The months of preparation were climaxed at the traditional Vaudeville dance when awards were announced. The Thespian troupe and Footlights Club also offer dramatic activity to interested Shortridge students. Philip Hirsch instructs Kathy Lach on the fine points of makeup as she prepares Terry Thies for his vaudeville appearance. 10 We SHS youmalzst Eddze Buechei gets an assignment he types copy for the daily publication ,' the finished from the boavd zn the Echo offzce fiom his notes product! The Shortridge Daily Echo, the Annual, the Christmas Echo, the Spring Anthology, WIAN- Shortridge has many voices. We are proud of the high standards of journalism which our school has maintained for so many years. The Echo, with more than 60 years of continuous daily publication, is a school tradition. It serves students, faculty, and parents. The Annual is a senior class project, but it records the year for the whole school. The Christmas Echo and the Spring Anthology give students a chance to see their creative writing in print. WIAN serves the entire community, and also offers a center for those interested in radio work. 11 , .pcs fda. it is 3 Wm 'W , H s ie. wg.
