The Color Guard Advances . . . ROTC 'iBattalion-attention. Pass in review. At the adjutant's brisk command, the Short- ridge R.O.T.C. unit snaps to life and pre- pares to receive the inspecting officer. From parade field to classroom the members of the Reserve Officers Training Corps are taught not only military technique, but also discipline, courtesy, and teamwork. Under the able guidance of Sergeant Albert C. Fischer, instructor in military science and tactics, the 200 members of the unit are taught military policy, first aid, infantry organization, map reading. characteristics of infantry weapons, combat formations and tactics, and markzmanship. The rifle team is headed by Sergeant Lewis Castner. The R.O.T.C. also participates at all athletic events, and the patrol aids in orienting freshmen. This year, for the first time, the unit is headed by a lieutenant colonel. Holding that position is Charles Marlowe, who is also president of the Officers Club. Second in command is Major Richard Bogan. Promo- tion assignments are based on examinations for leadership, practical ability, and theo- retical knowledge. Those taking three years of R.O.T.C. in high school are not required to take the basic course in college, but are in a position for rank of officer in the advanced course, upon completion of which they may be commissioned as second lieu- tenants in the army reserve. The mechanism of a gun is explained cadets by Sgt. Fischer. In the fall, close order drill and physical training are practiced in preparation for the Armistice Day parade, after which class work is held.
