Commerce The Commerce Department offers courses in the fields of stenography, bookkeeping, machine calculation, business law, and typing. Outside credit can be earned in retail prob- lems by students who work part time and attend the class at school. Several seniors taking these courses are employed part time in oflices, and some are departmental assist- ants. The department is excellently equipped with a variety of new and modern machines, which give pupils practical knowledge of the business world. ABOVE---Typing is useful in school, business and leisure t' it' 't' . Arts and Crafts me at BELOW--Students learn the essentials of math in business arithmetic. Due to the generosity of George Calvert, the father of a Short- ridge student, several beautiful paintings have been on exhibit in the Selleck Memorial Art Gallery. Also on exhibit have been the familiar vaudeville and Echo program covers. Reorganized this year is the Fine Arts Committee to aid the Art Department in its numerous activities. Two newly organized classes are: painting, taught by Mr. Yeager, and fashion design, taught by Miss Jane Messick. Another interesting project of the Art Department is the ex- changing of high school art work with a school in Guate- mala. Handicrafts gives opportunity for practical application Commercial art students plan the layouts of tomorrow of manual skills. J'

World peace is the most important thing to the United States now, and it is striving to maintain friendly relationships with for- eign countries. Languages play a great part in this. Aside from teaching the languages of for- eign countries, the Shortridge Language De- partment promotes friendly feeling toward the countries. Pupils learn about the people, their customs, and more about the country itself. ABOVE-The Shortridge bookstore provides supplies and books for every course offered. BELOW-A large school requires an eflicient staff of custodians. Health Service Do you need first aid? Well, wait no longer. Hurry to 120, the Health Oiice. Capable nurses and two rest- ing wards await you. All minor emergencies are taken care of here. Yearly health records for each Shortridge student are also kept by the Health Service. Cafeteria The job of Mrs. Frances Lichten- walter, cafeteria director. is a big one. If you don't think so, try put- ting out about 2400 hamburgers for 2000 hungry Shortridgers in one day. Future plans for the cafeteria in- clude new additions and modern improvements. Bookstore The Shortridge Bookstore is under the direction of Mr. Hobbs. His assistants are Sue Kassebaum. Elea- nor Reed, Joe Spencer, and Betty Lou Stewart. The Bookstore pro- vides all school supplies. handles tickets for various events, has charge of class jewelry, the Locker Depart- ment, and the Lost and Found De- partrnent. Custodians It is taken for granted by most stu- dents that Shortridge will be in run- ning order every day. However, this does not come about by magic. The staff of custodians Works hard to keep the school clean, neat, and prepared for emergencies. Short- ridgers are truly grateful to them. ABOVE--Do you have blisters, headaches, a broken leg? The Health Service has a remedy for every ill. BELOW-Hungry humans!
