World peace is the most important thing to the United States now, and it is striving to maintain friendly relationships with for- eign countries. Languages play a great part in this. Pupils learn about the people, their customs, and more about the country itself. Science, the nucleus of an Atomic A ge . Teaching students about the living and mechanical world, and what it is composed of, is the object of the Science Department. The theory and principle of levels and other mechanical devices are taught in the Physics Department. The Biology Department has three fields of instruction: biology, botany. and zoology. As projects in these fields. nature hikes are often taken by entire classes. By actual experimentation, the law of definite proportions is taught by the Chemistry Department. Commerce The Commerce Department offers courses in the fields of stenography, bookkeeping, machine calculation, business law, and typing. Outside credit can be earned in retail prob- lems by students who work part time and attend the class at school. Several seniors taking these courses are employed part time in oflices, and some are departmental assist- ants. The department is excellently equipped with a variety of new and modern machines, which give pupils practical knowledge of the business world. ABOVE---Typing is useful in school, business and leisure t' it' 't' . Arts and Crafts me at BELOW--Students learn the essentials of math in business arithmetic. Due to the generosity of George Calvert, the father of a Short- ridge student, several beautiful paintings have been on exhibit in the Selleck Memorial Art Gallery. Also on exhibit have been the familiar vaudeville and Echo program covers. Reorganized this year is the Fine Arts Committee to aid the Art Department in its numerous activities. Two newly organized classes are: painting, taught by Mr. Yeager, and fashion design, taught by Miss Jane Messick. Another interesting project of the Art Department is the ex- changing of high school art work with a school in Guate- mala. Handicrafts gives opportunity for practical application Commercial art students plan the layouts of tomorrow of manual skills. J'
