The Class of 53 ! Four years ago the acfual achievement of that title seemed only a hazy and far away possibility as we freshmen, 102 strong, entered Shorter. We filled up the whole of Cooper Dorm, even spilling over into Van hloose, and we really made the rafters ring that first night that our big sisters acquainted us with hHi-Minded Spirit. From that year we ' ll always remember our first rush week ratting and the horror house; water fights; Sunday night suppers in our suites; our first Student Body program presented by the Mad Music Majors, and the fun of our first party, Literature for Life at Shorter. September, 1952, found us a mere 70. This year we were the ratters, but we donned our rat caps with more fear and trembling than they had inspired in us the year before! Snow White was the theme of our last party; then before we knew it we found ourselves making the Daisy chain and sadly saying farewell to Maggie and all of her seniors. Mary, as President, gathered together what was left of us on Junior Hall, and we happily greeted our own little sisters! We broke the record during health week for the first (and last!) time, and for a while we all wore healthy smiles and rosy cheeks, which have long since faded. We ' ll never forget that first party with the wonderful way that our sisters presented the theme, HHitch Your Wagon to a Star. Then elections, and the strange feeling it was to find members of our own class heading the major campus organizations. Ann presided at class meetings in Senior Den. There were only 35 of us now, being very dignified (?) at senior coffees. We ' ll always remember fran- tically hemming our robes; having Sunday break- fasts in the den, our practice teachers, Sandifer ' s laugh, the Queenie record, everybody being blinded by the flash of diamonds, and the magic of the Sophomore party. Comprehensives came and went and we were looking forward, sadly, but proudly, to the day when we, as the class of 1953, would carry the teachings and ideals of Shorter into the new life that awaited us. 19
