In these years, unique in history, you have been studying to equip your- selves for living. Your Commencement Day begins the test of this equipment. It is mv wish for all of you that you will carry into adult life those attributes which you have in abundance and which will make for gracious living. Review them as you approach the end of your college career and keep them inviolate as you meet the challenge of your time. These traits of sympathy, tolerance, unselfishness and ambition — sparked by your own intel- lectual curiosity and Christian idealism will make of you as valuable a citizen as you have been a student here at Shorter. We congratulate you on these achievements during your college years; we are confident that you will go on to other worthwhile accomplishments. You go into a distraught, troubled world. The days ahead will not be easy, but we hope that the learning, understanding, poise, and faith which you have experienced at Shorter will be a bulwark of strength for any eventuality. May each of you find in your personal lives a serenity, joy, and peace although these qualities of life be lacking among nations. As you leave us in June, our very best wishes go with you.
