It is the aim of this organization to promote, not mastery, but an interest in sports- manship and physical well being. The Association is made up of all the students, and its activities are directed by the officers and the cabinet. The presidents of the denominational groups are ex-officio members of the cabinet. There are three worship services sponsored by the S. C. A.: daily morning watch, the Tuesday evening worship service, and Sunday vespers. In addition several special projects are spon- sored during the year. Every fall the Hallowe ' en carnival is held. In cooperation with the Na- tional and International Student Christian Move- ment the S. C. A. contributes to the World Stu- dent Service Fund. Purpose of the S. C. A.: To create for every Shorter girl a full and creative life through a growing knowledge of God. Council Members are Christian Student leaders who, working with Dr. Bunyan Stephens, of First Baptist Church, seek to link each Shorter Baptist girl to the Rome church during college days and to effect a unified program for all Baptist religious activities. The purpose of the Methodist Student Union is to bring the Shorter Methodist girls in closer contact with the First Methodist Church in Rome, of which the Reverend Claude Hendrix is pastor. Secretary-Treasurer GRUBB In spite of the fact that Callie and Dot Ann kept a resignation handy, because the editor was continually losing annual mate- rial, we finished the 1943 ARGO. It was hard to keep the annual secrets; the seniors are full of curiosity, but we kept our mouths closed. However, the seniors could have drilled to the martial tunes we played on the typewriter, had they been able to recognize them. So here it is the staff ' s knowledge of reading, writing, and ' rithmetic, Mr. El- liott ' s knowledge of photography, the en- graver ' s dummy, all mixed with the pre- vailing spirit of the time and wrapped in red, white and blue. Four committees were ap- ointed: the scrap-gathering committee, the conservation committee, the stamp and ond selling committee, and he committee to foster the irst-aid course. There was a defense stamp )uying contest between the :wo societies, that was won y the Eunomians. A deco- ated booth was set up in the War Information Center, and a girl was always stationed there to sell stamps. Shorter Holds Health Week In keeping with the na- tional program of keeping physically fit. the Shor te Sports Association sponsorec a Health Week at Shorter. The sports council set up the rules for this week anc wardens were appointed fo each end of the halls to keep check of the students ' progres At the end of the week i was discovered that four end of the halls had perfect rec ords. Turns Reading Room Into War Information Center To keep Shorter girls in- formed up to the minute on the latest world happenings, the International Relations Club has changed the Read- ing Room into a War Infor- mation Center. Maps have been hung on the walls, flags of the Allied Nations displayed, pamphlets on defense jobs and activities and news of the latest war books are in the room. A large bulletin board that i? kept up to date has all the latest news events on it. Guinn Receives Two Crowns Emily Cuinn Rules as May Queen and as Carnival Queen In the selecting of student )ody superlatives, Emily Guinn, of LaGrange, was elected to rule as Shorter ' s M;iy Queen. Emily picked her court f rom :he senior class, and it was composed of Martha Pace, maid of honor; Lotis Free- man, Margaret Edenfield, Frances Neisler, Anne Betts, Nell Nelson, Betty Nelson, Alice Woodall, Mary Alice Chitty. and Carolyn Wallace. In the Fall Emily was chosen by her class to repre- sent them in the race for Hal- lowe ' en Carnival Queen, and with the senior victory she was crowned queen. Shorter Spirit Shows in Sports The interest in sports thi year, according to Cornelia Cater, president of the Sports Association, is something to brag a b o u t. Participator this year has reached a per centage never before attainet in this student generation. Volley ball and basebal have been the outstanding jought with the money that usually goes to them. However, in order to keep :he literary spirit alive, the :wo staffs are working with :he Rho Delta, the writers ' club, and hold meetings with ts members. At these meet- ings original compositions are read and discussed. This plan will be continued until the war is over, when the publication of the Periscope and Chimes will be resumed. Shorter Frosh Elect Officers Leila Mowry Heads Class of ' 46 Early in the year the class of 1946 elected its officers. Barbara Monroe, of Way- cross, president of the junior class, presided at the first class meeting. The freshmen elected Leila Mowry, of Rome, as their president, and she went into office immedi- ately. The other officers that were elected were Frances Cosby, of Columbus, vice-president; Jane Langford, of Plant City, Florida, secretary, and Kath- erane Andrews, of Columbus, treasurer. These officers have headed their class for the year 1942- 1943. and have shared with the junior officers in heading the Whoop-Em-Up Genera- tion. group sports that students have been interested in. The senior class won the volley ball championship. This year the members of the staff voted to do away with the Chimes publication in order to help in the war effort.
