Sciences Undergo Revisiong Math Retains Advanced Program The modernized approach to sciences gives students a greater chance to discover the laws of science through experimentation. Under the program of the Biological Science Committee Study, the Physics Science Study Committee and the Chemistry Science Study Committee, the new method of increasing the use of mathematics and laboratory work in science classes is being tested. Students are placed at regular and intensive levels according to their ability and initiative to accept challenging work. In order to meet the need for increased mathematics in the sciences and in advanced college study, Shoreline's math department offers a wide range of selection. Courses ranging from basic senior math to more advanced classes, including math analysis, are available to Shoreline students who wish to widen their mathematical background. The knowledge of foreign languages is becoming more in demand throughout the world as a result of faster transportation and better communication. Since two years of foreign language are a minimum requirement for college admittance, Shoreline offers Latin, Spanish, German and French to give students a variety of choice. In Spanish and French new methods are being tried. The Spanish program consists primarily of oral drills, with a minimum of written work. The Marchand Method is being tested in hrst year French. In this direct method of teaching, there is no translating. Instead pictures are used to depict the meaning of French phrases. Shoreline provides a language laboratory where students can measure their ability to speak a foreign language. German, French and Spanish students utilize this laboratory located in room 10.

Advi.re.r: GRA, Girls' In- tramurals. Girls' PE Stresses Exercise Two years of physical education and one semester of health are required for graduation from Shoreline. Physical education us- ually is taken during the soph- omore and junior years and health in the senior year. The boys' phy- sical education program divides students into age groups and the courses they take are determined accordingly. All sophomores take wrestling, gymnastics, soccer and weight training, while juniors participate in badminton, volleyball and track. Girls' physical education is continually changing. In the program now existent, girls are grouped according to their ability as determined by certain skills tests. This enables the student to compete only with those of his own level of performance. For the first time warm-up exercises were required before class. This assured some exercise each day regardless of the sport. Each gym period begins with the count of one, two, three, four as girls do warm-up exercises. The newly required exercises, part of the physical fitness program, insure some strenuous exercise for girls each day.
