Lander, Johnson Head English Department Mr. F. J. johnson became head of the English Department in January, 1964. Mr. Johnson replaced Mr. Richard E. Lander when Mr. Lander became head of the humanities division at the Shoreline Community College. In the past 15 years English has been redefined to illustrate its three separate components: literature, composition and language. Fifty percent of class time is devoted to literature, 35 percent is spent on composition, and 15 percent of the time is allotted for language. Team teaching, a relatively new program at Shoreline, is designed to aid col- lege bound students. Two days a week, students listen to lectures given by various instructors, after which small groups are formed for further discussion. The program en- compasses sophomore English, sen- ior English intensive, and U. S. his- tory and junior English combined. twig , , . ' z : '. ., I .fairs MRS. GAIL EVANS: English 12, Reg., Int., TT. i Discussion is a basic activity in all history classes. Here Mrs. Judy Baker discusses an aspect of the Civil War with her sixth period class. Mayor Clinton Addresses Government Class World history and United States history constitute the basic history requirements for graduation from Shoreline. The history department also offers economics, world problems, government, senior seminar and Russian history. Throughout the year the government class heard speakers such as Seattle's Mayor Gordon Clinton. It was also the first time a Shoreline government class was able to visit a superior court. Through these programs students gain better understanding of the many phases of government. An experiment of integrating United States History Intensive and English ll Intensive was put into effect this year. The group of students had the same English and history teachers during a two-period block. Sometimes both periods were used for the instruction of only one subject. Objectives of the program were to increase the understanding of the country's history through a study of its literary expression and to relate the history of the English-American language to literature.
