Flying to me is hours of boredom separated by a few minutes of stark ter- ror. All of us know him as that fun-loving guy who teaches com- puter programming to unsuspec- ting students. But let us now take a moment to reflect upon another aspect of the teacher we call Mr.Cole. Mr.Cole be an flying during Vietnam when ie was drafted into the Air Force as a pilot. After flying for a year, his Air Force pilot career ended when he was grounded for medical reasons. Although he was not flying with the Air Force, he continued to fly on his own time with his FAA licence. I got very lucky, I went to japan, not Viet- nam. As a matter of fact, in the several years I served in the Air Randee Whitfield Directed Studies Katie Wilson French Force, I never even fired a gun! Later, Mr.Cole got his chance to combine his interest in flying with teaching when he taught an aerospace class at Shorecrest. However, the program was cut from the curriculum after the school realized that there was no insurance for Mr.Cole and his wild bunch of Red Barons. Of course, Mr.Cole had some terrifying moments. One time, he heard some strange banging noises. Suspectin engine trouble, he set the plane gown, ffortunate- ly, it was a long runwayj got out fast and returned the keys. There was no question in my mind that I was going to die! He didn't find out until ater that the noises were from the passenger seatbelt hang- ing out the window.
