l 140 Faculty heer torture for a high school student is being trapped in the faculty room at peak faculty hour. But why is that so bad? What is the reason for this facultyphobia? It could be any number of explanations, but the biggest reason is FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN! What do, students know about their teachers and other members of the faculty? Most know very little besides the fact that they wear glasses, give out too many C's, and live somewhere in this state. Students don't really get to know the faces that may pass by them in the halls every day. Could it be a generation gap problem? Maybe faculty people use archaic dialect instead of modern slang. Maybe they wear out-dated dress shoes instead of dirty worn out sneakers. Maybe they like to listen to easy listening music instead of rock, bop, or punk. Whatever the differences are, it's hard to get to know someone who has very little in common with you. W And it seems as if the student-faculty relationship doesn't have too much of a foothold to cling to. But do not fret, there may ex- ist some common ground that both sides can compromise on. Many students even reach the step of friendly conversation or even petty gossip, and soon the bottomless generation pit becomes a smaller, closer-knit generation canyon. This is a good sign because the closer one gets to know another person, the less one has to fear of the unknown, for the simple reason that there is less unknown than there was before. Soon, students will be able to use this skill in order to meet more and more faculty members and build up step by step the courage to overcome their fears. Not only will they be able to remain in a room with huge numbers of faculty, but they will also have gained the knowledge of knowing a few more individuals. Facultyphobia is conquered! But what about studentphobia? Sheer torture for a faculty member is being trapped at a wild high school student party . . . E
