X35 Q' Q I 3 E Aw Warren Pattison, Senior Counselor staff and students A student sits cross-legged on the floor, poring over college pamphlets. Should he go to col- lege and which one would be best if he did? Much help in the decision can come from one of Shorecrest's counselors who give objective, sympathetic advice to students. They consider each problem personally and help many students to adulthood. Norma Dimmitt, Senior Counselor The second hand clicks up to the twelve as the bell buzzes the end of class. It is the first day of school and the long period of the flexible schedule is finished. Shorecrest students may find it confusing but very helpful for classes such as biology where lab projects can be completed easily. They gain experience in learning through both large and small groups. These students receive better qualified instruction because each member of the team is an expert in the field he teaches. He has more time to prepare each of his lessons. Team teaching will probably be used more and more in the future to better prepare high school students for college. 1 'I Loyann Smith, English Anita Lamp, English Tim Olson, English Lana Rae Tussing, English 3 ' er' if Lorry Whitney, Socioi Studies Lindo Soesr, Social Srudies, Journalism Paul Bushue, Social Studies History connects pci t, Team Yeoching affords new techniques for learning ig, ' r i 4 Bruce MacDougall, Social Studies present, and future Wild cheers fill the large auditorium. Suddenly the crowd begins a steady chant, calling tor the speaker to return to the microphone. Many Shorecrest students can be seen at this political rally, The presidential election this year has given students a chance to witness history being made. In the classroom the history courses prepare the students with an understanding of local an'd inter- national attairs, For this reason the sophomores study world history while the iuniors are engaged in analyzing U.S. history and government. They do this by offering a program which varies from general math to calculus and math analysis. Technical knowledge such as this is taught at Shore- crest art classes so that in un- derstanding basic concepts, the student can control his visual art. With this control, he can say something meaningful. John Carlson, Art Hialmer Andersen, Study Hall The last screw in the wiring for a large wooden lamp is twisted into place. This proiect is being finished at the school shop which is open one evening a week, Boys can use school equipment to work on any proi- ect they wish. The industrial arts department stresses the voca- tional use of industrial skills. For this reason people from different occupations are invited to talk to the classes. Boys gain practical knowledge for their future. This image may have been true several years ago, but now health students are more likely to be avidly reading from Freud. Their study is divided into three maior areas: mental health, community health, and adult living. The relationship between these areas is emphasized. Sup- plemental reading is encouraged so that the student can research advanced ideas. Helen Pierce, Senior Health Shorecrest trains students for better living Gail Gilbert, Home Economics Thomas Rodrique, Orchestra Two young children are en- gaged in a noisy quarrel over a teddy bear. Calmly the girl in charge settles the tight by inter- esting them in another game. These children are a part of a nursery school conolucted by the home economics class. Other areas covered by the home ec. students are family re- lations, home furnishings, cloth- ing construction, tamily tinance, and meal management and preparation, The obiective is to provide girls with practical skills they will be able to use now and in the future. The typewriter key is punched with a click as a practice edi- torial is recopied for the Intro- duction to Publications class. Students in this class were shown most aspects of all the areas of iournalism to be used in school publications and, per- haps, for a career. The tennis ball plonks hard against the fence and sticks in one of the wicker holes. The fast-moving play stops momen- torily for it to be retrieved. The popularity of tennis is growing in Seattle ond the Shorecrest team has gotten bigger every year. This sport is very grueling os it involves constant move- ment by the two ployers ond matches sometimes last as long os two hours. It is one of the few varsity games in which no substitutions ore allowed, so each ployer must be in top con- dition. Playing singles ond dou- bles motches, the boys gained self-reliance. f,f '5 ':+ T -1-4 J 5 5 f 'g,,- -.5 . QW' r iiiiffif f if Sl Sf! ' 'Sf f ' f N7 Q in -. Sopho- rnores can recall the exultation of winning the bagpipes for the first time, the perplexity involved with deciding which committee to sign up for, the exciting anticipation in elect- ing their ovvn officers, and the intense pres- sure of studying for the first two-hour final. After elections in the fall, the class of '67 began organizing. Class traditions, govern- ment, and enthusiasm began to be built for the three years of high school. One of the first activities planned was a box social to earn money for their proiect.
