NEITHER BLACK , NOR h WHITE j E TOTTN OWARD GRIFFIN LECT E For years the idea had haunted me: if a white man became a Negro in the deep South, what adjustments would he have to make? What is it like to experience discrimination based on skin color, something over which one has no control? How else except by becoming a Negro could a White man hope to learn the truth? Determined to find out, John Howard Griffin, a white man, became a Negro. The account of his ex- perience related in his book, Black Like Me, was also the topic of the lecture he presented to a capacity audience in Memorial Auditorium on the night of January 20, 1966. John Howard Griffin began life as a Negro in New Orleans on November 7, 1959. For six weeks he experi- enced life as ten percent of the Natiorfs people know 112.
