A crisp October day and our hard-fought 34-33 victory over Lock Haven State 'Col- lege formed the backdrop for 'Shippensburg States 1965 Homecoming festivities. Mrs. Jane Boyer. Fox, the 1964 queen, crowned Miss Sandi Dent, who reigned over the events of the day. During the half-time ceremonies, Miss Dent awarded trophies to the winners in' the float contest, the theme of which was A Page from the Funnies. The recipients were the class of 1969, with Popeye ; the Business Club, with Yogi Bear ; and the Brotherhood of Sigma Pi, with Huckle- berry Hound. After awarding the trophies, Miss Dent was escorted by Dr. Heigese to the President's Box as an honored guest. J.VWH-f t-vuzjtvrfg'w e A 3- , g .. 3P3 2.1443313? W ,pfwwmwww , Mw- .Mwyx. What is it like to experience discrimination based on skin color, something over which one has no control? How else except by becoming a Negro could a White man hope to learn the truth? Determined to find out, John Howard Griffin, a white man, became a Negro. The account of his ex- perience related in his book, Black Like Me, was also the topic of the lecture he presented to a capacity audience in Memorial Auditorium on the night of January 20, 1966. John Howard Griffin began life as a Negro in New Orleans on November 7, 1959. For six weeks he experi- enced life as ten percent of the Natiorfs people know 112. Lars is from Boras, Sweden. Many of the students here at Shippensburg S t a t 6 College have asked me how I came to choose this particular college for my stipend year in Amer- ica. The Simple answer is that I didnlt choose - I was chos- en, which I always will be very grateful for. I am convinced that I couldn't have come to a place giving me more of essen- tial values and experiences than this college. A small stu- dent body and small classes have given me many oppor- tunities to gain friends among the students and the teachers. The central location of Ship- pensburg has also made it easy for me to be acquainted with a major part of the country. My experiences here have brought me a better know- ledge and an improved under- standing of America, which I am sure that I will profit from in my future private life as well as in my career as a jour- nalist back in Sweden. I owe much to all of you who have made my year in Shippensburg a most pleasant and rewarding one, and I sincerely wish you all the best of luck and happi- ness in years to come. s'gywn w W -thhuw - ' r , $3 3:-- 25. Students of Shippensburg State College: A hurricane passing over the landscape may cause great changes andtfrequently entails much damage. A gentle breeze may bend the trees but the change is gradual. It costs less, also. Sometimes we have the ehoice of methods of change. In education, it might be said that we are in the midst of a gale. State and federal funds are being received by higher education and we must all makethe most of them. The ex- panding campus, the increased student body, and the aug- mented faculty mean a continual series 0f adjustments. You have seen great changes on the campus at Shippensburg and you have cooperated in meeting the problem's attending them. We predict that further adjustments, particularly in the offerings at Shippensburg, are just over the horizon. As you sail' forth into your chosen occupation, your alma mater wishes you successp 6 g k d C e h t f 0 n e .d :10 6 r P Cw 6 .WD 6 H E h .m; a R L D v 'v'mwi'r V i A X xxx VX X M W em QR NW wwwxxx Wh m XXX m X xxx X h XX Xxxxxx x'ix xxx hm WK W WX XXX x m M W W X x Xxxhx xxxxiiix k hi W h 'Nxh i.-v.- w: Dr. Ralph Heiges, uponecompletion of his tenth year as Shippensburg State College president, can feel very proud of the goals he has seen fulfilled under his capable guidance. During his ten years as president, the college has expanded beyond all expectations. The most noticeable changes have been the addition of ten new buildings, the doubling of the campus acreage, and the fourfold expan- sion in enrollment. Also in the past ten years, Dr. Heiges has instigated the graduate prograrh and the liberal arts and library science programs as new curriculums. And so, as Dr. Heiges points to the future,,one can see that the Shippensburg Campus has many promising years ahead under his continued guidance. 1 e ' WWW W'ww', ADMINISTRATION , WW W Dr. D.
