Look again. This is a road to knowledge and service. Within these buildings we are guided through knowledge into the service of educating our fellow man. A beautiful tree-lined road, yes, but also the road to knowledge and the service of humanity. TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication Administration and Faculty Summer and Autumn Spring DIQDICATIO For her untiring service to our college, her maintenance of high stand- ards, resourcefulness in initiating new ideas, and her unfailing, sincere in- terest in aiding the students, we, the class of 1959, dedicate our yearbook, with highest esteem, to Dr. Etta C. Skene. Dr. Skene came to Shippensburg in 1942 as Chairman of the Business Educaion Department. Under her leadership, the department has gI'0WI1 from two teachers to six, from 125 students to 3093 from a scanty curricu- lum to one of the best Business Education curricula in the Commonwealth. In July 1959, after the summer pre-session, Dr. Skene will retire. In 1957 she was given the award as wfhe Outstanding Business Educa- tion Teacher in Pennsylvaniaf' She is known throughout the nation for her collaboration in 'Teaching Principles and Procedures for Gregg Short- hand, and her various articles for business education yearbooks, business education quarterlies, and other magazines. Dr. Skene plans to reside in New Jersey, pursue her hobbies, travel, read and perhaps teach. Dr. Skene expresses her philosophy in this way, I know of no better way to help others than to teach, and in retirement I wish to carry along this same philosophyf' l Dr. Etta B. skene Gilbert Hall, familiarly known as the Business Building, was built in 1912 as the campus Lab- oratory School. In 1946 it was converted to its present use, and has been serving as the home and producer of our Business Education majors. FOOTBALL It took the Red Raiders of Coach Jack Roddick a while to get started, but once they did, they played tremendous football and finished the season with four wins and four losses. Without a doubt, the highlight of the season was the West Chester game, played on a damp October after- noon before 3,000 partisan fans. ,Although Shippens- burg lost 410 to 20, West Chester's players agreed after the fray that it was their toughest game of the year. The power of the conference had dropped only one game, to powerful Villanova, and they were running over opponents by wide margins. They were first in the nationas small colleges in defense and only Villa- nova had scored upon them. But Shippensburg rolled up 203 yards on the ground and added 202 in the air. Burns ran for 157 yards in 10 carries, scoring one touch- down on a 97-yard scamper in the second period. Shippensburg lost a tough one in the season opener at Bloomsburg. The Huskies reversed the Raiders 20 to 19 with an accurate passing game and a gruelling ground attack. Sid Wells, Ron Rock and Bob Gribble scored for the Raiders. With John Freeland cracking the line with a one- yard plunge, Shippensburg scored a fourth-quarter touchdown that enabled them to sc-ore a 10 to 6 victory over Shepherd College on Parents' Day. Harold Hopple kicked a '20-yard field goal in the first period. At East Stroudsburg, Shippensburg recorded their first conference win with a 14. to 0 victory. Ted McGee passed for the first score and plunged for the second. 36 California, the conference champ, spoiled the gala Homecoming Day celebrations for the Raiders with a 19-0 spanking on Heiges Field. The inability to score also cost Shippensburg the Clarion game as they 'blew scoring chances and took a 12 to 7 defeat on the Clarion campus. Burns scored for Shippensburg on a 475-yard punt return. After the West Chester game, Shippensburg went on the rampage, defeating Cheyney 50 to 13 and humbling Mansfield in the season final, 54. to 6. Senior co-captain, Don Trexler, climaxed a brilliant four-year career by being selected to the first-team all- conference eleven. He was also selected by his team- mates as the teamis outstanding lineman. Bob Criblble won the outstanding back award. This year the team had only one Senior member, Norma Dungan. Norma has played Varsity hockey since her freshman year, and this year was co-captain of the Raiderettes. The other co-captain was Roxie Diller Gray, a Junior. The remainder of the team should all return next year, and with this past year's experience they should work together quite well. The Varsity and Junior Varsity teams were under the supervision -of MiSS Helen Kraiss. The intramural program, primarily green horns and the more advanced be- ginners, is under the supervision of Miss Henderson. Both coaches work hard and do a fine job inspiring the girls to better playing and sportsmanship, which is really the ultimate goal of all the sports programs. X, Ww- Infirmary Phi Sigma Chi Intramu l Football C0 Captain John Scott Senior ,lim Alter Co-Captain Gene Linn BASKETBALL lt was an exciting year for Coach Tom Crist and his Red Raider basketball team as they smashed records with some of the finest team play ever displayed on the hard- woods of Alumni Gym. With 14- victories Sz eight defeats, Shippensburg recorded the most victories in one season in the history of the hoop sport at S.S.T.C. ,lohn Scott, considered by many as one of the most outstanding players to wear the Red and Blue, set in- dividual records as he tallied 392 points at an average of almost 18 points a game. Only one senior, Jim Alter, played on the Red Raider squad this season. Alter was effective often during the year with his deadly one-hand set shot and aided in the rebounding department. With a good freshman club, how- ever, Coach Crist should have little trouble finding a replacement for his starting five. Shippensburg found the out-of-conference foes a little easier than the league opponents. Shippensburg record- ed eight wins in 14 league contests while they dropped only one decision in eight non-conference battles. Highlights of the season were in the exciting victories scored over such favored opponents as the University of Baltimore, Juniata, lVlt. St. Maryis, and lndiana. Coach Crist rotated six men in order to play his fast- breaking game. After Scott, Donald Thorn, Galen Linn, Galen Wyrick, and Alter rounded out the starting five. Sixth man on the team was diminutive Ted Woods. At five feet, six inches, Woods was the shortest player on the court in every Shippensburg game. But what a shot! His long one hand stabs from anywhere on the court broke many a Shippensburg game wide open. Under freshman .Coach Keith Hess, the freshman team compiled a 13-win-and-41-loss log. SCORES S.S.T.C. Mr. Kramer SE ICR Philip Lively, President Robert Gall, Vice-President Norma Dungan, Secretary Pat Gable Mentzer, Treasurer Larry Curren, Parliamentarian Dolores Radakovich, Historian And all of time is today The pit of Rome's decay The Oratory of a Socrates disciple, The crucifixion of a Carpenter, The sleepless hours of a Nameless baritone, a tired poet. Nothing is past that is not here For us toffsee, to look at And say From this l will learn. Because of this my song will burn A deeper scar or burn a brighter flame. From this will I learn. For this l came To be. Through the countless arch's of Ulysses We all must pass continually. Today -- here is one constructed From the fibers of the mind, A seed planted, a meteor set To mark a path or fall unknown. We grow and yet continue to grow But we reap not alone the seed we we sow . . . For it scatters according to the force, lts path is grooved according to the channel That we set. The design we paint Will figure someone else's memory For this today and all of time to be. The planted seed will blossom If scattered when the wind is fresh And the earth is fertile. But look to the seed You sow. We are all of time's tomorrows And if we teach the world as flat, Decayed and ruthless what is there But sharp defense for a generation That will see only yesterday For in the dark night of the blind ls a loss to see the power of the mind. So look to the seed you sow And to the sky and the earth Before you give the mind freedom Of new birth. Joseph E. Thomas, '59 X . K '.,, . EDITORIAL By this time you have probably arrived at a con- clusion concerning the merit of this year,s publication of The Cumberland. What I have to say will not change your mind, and that is not the purpose of this editorial. Shippensburg State Teachers College is in the midst of a transitional period. This transition in- volves the academic program, social activities, and the most striking feature, the changing of the general appearance of the college campus. With these changes have come problems. Some of the problems have been solved, some are in the process of being solved, and others have no definite solution in sight. L The publishing of the yearbook at Shippensburg has also created many problems. These problems in- volve adapting a publication to accomodate twelve hundred students where only half that number were enrolled a few years ago. ln this publication flaws may perhaps be found, but in its own way it tells its story. Our greatest handicap was lack of space. We hope this edition of The Cumberland points the way for a big school annual at S.S.T.C. My thanks to the people who believed in this book and did something to help it. They often did the work of many people, merely because they had no other choice.
