He will always he remembered as a quiet reserved young man who was regarded as an outstanding football player during his freshman year. Surely, Wilson will he among the many cherished memories of our high school days. 41 A well-known executive Or a president, indeed! These two seem to be Most nzusicafly born. 43 We Were There Itis September, 1954, and we are in the junior high building on Burd street, attending classes only in the afternoon. One hundred and ninety-six teenagers are at last freshmen and they have chosen as their officers Don Coy, president, Judi Owens, vice-president, Judy Burk- hart, treasurer, and Dorothy Angle, secretary. Wait a minute, the results of another election are be- ing announced. We hear. . . Barbara Ann Brown, presi- dent of the first Student committee, and assisting her are Fred Lesher, vice-president, Glynnette Walker, secretary, and Sherry Mooney, treasurer. Now we switch to the auditorium and our reporter there is talking to the newly elected cheerleaders, who are making plans for their first pep meeting. Excuse me, oh, excuse me girls, I wonder if you could all introduce your- selves. Why, we'd be glad to. Fm Jody Rockwell and this is Joyce Burkholder. The rest of the girls are Glynnette Walker, Judy Heberlig, Cindy Hays, Dotty Weaver, Sonja Goodhart, Sandy Helman, Kay Miller, Gretchen Gribble, Pat Dyer, and Barbara Ann Brown. lt's the evening of the fifteenth of April, 1955. We find ourselves in the gym where there is an atmosphere of a starry night in Paris, with fiowers decorating the walls behind the sidewalk cafe. The record music is playing for the crowd on the dance floor. Right now they are making an announcement, concerning the intermission. Why, l believe we are going to hear some special music from a group composed of Fred Lesher on trumpet, Ed On the bus Strohm on saxophone, Terry Cocklin playing the piano, Larry Coy beating the drums, and Arthur Smyth on the clarinet. Again we switch scenes, and this time we are in a bus traveling to Hershey. The trip includes a tour of the chocolate plant and Hershey park. What a day! First comes the chocolate plant and the aroma. Everyone finds the plant very interesting, especially the samples, right fellows? The final stop is the park and everyone is going different directions, boys to the roller coaster, girls to the less strenuous activities. lt's 6:00 P.M. and we are on the buses heading home, but wait, one of the buses is pulling off the road. I wonder what the trouble is? Let's tune in to our reporter on that bus. This is your reporter from Mr. Lang's bus. There is nothing to get excited about, we simply have a Hat tire so we will have to change it. At this, all the students unload from the buses and spot' an ice cream store. By the time the tire is fixed the store is completely sold out. - a Sox Hop Winners We now find ourselves in the senior high school build- ing and it's September, 1955. Don Coy, the re-elected president of the class of 58,', is talking over plans for the year with Judi Owens, vice-president, Terry Cocklin, secretary, and Fred Lesher, treasurer. Down the hall, the new J. V. cheerleaders are practicing for their first football game. Perhaps our reporter talk- ing with the cheerleaders can tell us their names. This is the lobby reporter, and l'm talking with Barbara Ann Brown, Pat Dyer, Cindy Hays, and Jody Rockwell, the new cheerleaders. That's all here, but as strains of '6Pomp and Circumstancew come floating from the gym, we see the King and Queen of the Valentine's Day, about to be crowned. We switch you to the crowning ceremony. Joyce Burkholder and Bob Michael are being crowned as the King and Queen of Hearts for the annual Sopho- more Valentine dance, this February 13. The dance started at 7:00 P. M. and rumors say that some students were frantic because the decorating committee finished decorating at 6:45 P. M. lt's April 6 and the gym is once again filled with music for the Sox Hop. The gym is uniquely decorated with soxs everywhere. On the battlefield We now skip ahead to 1956 and we are interviewing Bob Freeman, the newly elected president of the Junior class. Also present at the interview are Barbara Ann Brown, vice-president, Dorothy Angle, secretary, and Bruce Wyrick, treasurer. They have just announced that the class ring will be the 'SThunderbird. Again we switch to the gym where there seems to be a lot of ac- tivity. As we enter the gym, we find ourselves stepping into a scene of outdoor enchantment, with oriental lanterns casting a glow over the festivities. A bridge crosses over a rippling brook that meanders among the groves of blossoming trees. lt,s 8:00 P.M. on the third of May and through investigations we have found out that this is the Junior Prom, and the theme is 4'Teahouse of the August Moon. Coming in the door are the King and Queen, who are from the Senior class, and they are- Jack Nye and Gretchen Cresslerh-but leading them are the Junior members of the court, Romaine Myers, Kay Miller, Barbara Ann Brown, Joyce Martin, and Agnes Ramsier, Gordon Jensen, Dick Ruth, Fred Lesher, Jim Lytle, and Crawford Wiestling. They cross the bridge to the thrones and, after the crowning, dance to the music of the Blue Notes, while the other dancers watch. It is May 16-on a bus again, this time headed for Gettysburg, and everyone is overjoyed with the fact that he is getting out of a day of school. Our bus reporter announces that we have arrived, and we are now buying souvenirs and piling into the room where we are going to watch and hear the details of the Battle of Gettysburg on the electric map. There seem to be Yankee and Confeder- ate hats everywhere-and big straw hats? We are touring the battlefield, taking pictures as we go. The buses are headed home, but our reporter has just told us that one of the buses has broken down. History seems to repeat itself! The senior varsity cheerleaders are here and have filled me in on the football record, but first we should perhaps ask them their namesf, 'Tm Jody Rockwell, captain of the cheerleaders, and here are Cindy Hays and Delores Garmen. The juniors of the squad are Linda J ones, Nancy Cressler and Mary Ann Beyersf, Thank you, girls-say, are my eyes deceiving me, or do I see three of the football players wearing beards? Yes, Don Coy, Bob Michael, and Gary Long are growing beards until we lose a game, which we hope will never happenf' According to the statistics you cheerleaders have given me, you have had quite a successful season with 8 wins and 2 losses. Away back in ninth grade it was re- corded that you had a winning football season which con- tinued throughout your tenth grade as JV players. Then as Varsity players in eleventh grade you had a half and half season, followed by a real accomplishment of an 8-2 record. Congratulations should be sent out to this teamf' Back at the school many activities are in the planning. We are told the NHS is sponsoring the annual Snowball dance, December 21, and the Student Council is having a Toy Dance, December 13, and all the students are to bring toys, which will be distributed to the needy chil- dren of the community. It's March 28, and the Student Council District Con- vention is taking place at the high school. The conven- tion has lasted all day and the speaker is Senator Douglas Elliott. May 8- On a bus again, this time headed for New York, where many activifies are planned. We arrive at the Taft Hotel, and l'm told a visit to the UN, a trip around the island, a visit to Radio City, and perhaps a broadway show are just a few things in store for the Class of '58. Where's the ball? While the seniors are in New York, the juniors are busily preparing for the Junior-Senior prom which will honor this class May 23. The years in high school for seniors are now draw- ing to a close as we attend Baccalaureate service on func I and last of all Commencement on June 3. As we the members of the Class of '58 await our diplomas, a look of sadness due to leaving, comes over our faces, but we hope to look back and to remember all the wonderful and happy years we spent in high school, and even though we will never be able to relive those times, we will never forget, because- We Were There. 59 QxfQ'ix -Q535:.gu- g rf ,1- Q-.....,,, .s X ! We Come, We Sow, We Conquered The fired-up Greyhounds of '57, coached by George Kohut, John Connor, and William Peck wrote into the books an 8 win, 2 loss record, the best season for Shippensburg in thirty years. The team, having earned a runner-up trophy for the Class A Lower Susquehanna Conference Champion- ship, has done a lot in promoting pride and raising the spirit of the school. The game of the year was played against the Hanover Nighthawks, when fighting men of Shippensburg did not permit a single Nighthawk to cross the goal line in the first half. While the Greyhounds were able to push across thirteen points before the first half and seven the second half, a couple of quick passes for the Nighthawks in the second half spelled defeat for the Hounds. Still the Greyhounds, coming out of the game only one point behind 20 to 21, did not give up till the game was over. This proves that We Came, We Saw, We Con- queredf, JR.
