L J , , 1 EHIOX CLASS PROPHECY May 25, 1958 Dear Diary, It doesn't seem possible that Just ten years ago today my fifteen vwanderful classmates and I graduated from Shipman High School I was remlnded of that fact today when I picked up a Charm magazine and notlced that Louise Parker was faduon editor and dress designer for that magazine She alxays told us she had more ability than we gave her credit for Just as I was reading about Louise and her great success, the post man came with a letter postmarked Chicago, Illinois couldn't think of anyone I knew ln Chlcago, so I hurriedly opened it and found that it was from Wanda Jean Hudson, who is now married to a very prominent lawyer I learned that she is a mumnderful wife and mother But she is stil as mmdt ious as ever, as she is a pny ic l education instructor in a Chicago school Being shocked by all this I sat down to read the news paper, and what did I see but a plcture of Doris ouhling, who had Just been chosen Miss Amerlca for 1958 H I guess that proves Doris hasn't lost any of her old charms familiar voice I recognized it finally as Pete Moore,-in is now singing with the Metropolitian Op ra There must have been talent scouts at our senior play Then, I went back to my reading I saw an announcement of some famous orchestra now playing at Carneige Hall I read on and soon discovered that the maestro was none other than our talented, butlnmhful Joyce Gvillim we knew Joyce would get to the top if anyone would By then I remembered I was going to a movie in the Mtn' noon As I was passing Famous Barr I decided to stop in and get some hosiery, while at the counter I saw Joann Foiles She said she lived in a little vlne covered cottage in Hnpmmt she also told me that she had two dimpled twins So, we then decided to go to the Kiel Auditorium and see Phil Spitalnys orchestra who was playing there We looked at our programs and saw that Ruth Smith was the featured trombone player After the show, we went back stage and all had a long talk She told us that she saw Iola in Nex York and that she was a chdrus girl at Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe, and a very good one too As tonight was the first baseball game of the season Id? cided to see it The game was really good, but the real sur prise came when the game was tied two and two, The announcer sa1d,nCasey Taylor on deck ' Then, Casey made a home run which won the game for the Brooklyn Dodgers I went to the Dodgers dugout to see Casey We were congradulating him on his success He said, Uno wonder, look at my manager W Then, I turned and there was Popeye grinning as big as ever Popeye has taken over as manager of the team since Leo Durocher vas suspended It was really nice to see then both agaln After 0 'K TW ' V ' J. :J L, I .. Manoa always said she wanted to be a detective, but we just laughed at her. I guess she must have been serious. About two weeks later one of these members, Maxine Groves, left school and moved away from here. The Class officers were at first Charles Johnson, presi- dentg James Meyers, vice-presidentg and Orlyn Oettle, secre- tary-treasurer. About Christmas time James Meyers moved to Texas leaving the position of vice-president vacant. Soon after this Jean Shelton was elected as the new vice-president. The social events of the freshman class have been few. L . , 'Q I o THE PEP CLUB Shortly after basketball season began this year we tried something new and different for the girls We organlzed a Pep Club The following officers were elected at the organl zatlon meetlng Presldent Mary Lou Woolsey, Vice President Margle Hansen, Secretary Treasurer Betty Shelton, Sponsor Mrs Hook Fach one who wlshed to be a member was required to at tend half of the basketball games held at Shlpman and wear a dark colored skirt and a whlte blouse Dues were flxed at twenty flve cents a month We decided to meet elghth hour every Tuesday It was suggested at this organizatlon meeting that we make symbols and letters at the basketball games This was dore by using the diffe ent classes to make dlfferent ones and lt worked out swell At one of the ball games, 1 December, the glrls formed two long llnes, marched around and formed a UCU and then sang White Chrlstmas. They also formed a Ch 11 mas tree from the Eage down to the gym floor with each girl holding a llghted candle The llghts were then turned out and they sang Sllent blght We then began looking for w ys to make some money because we wanted to glve the basketball boys a banouet at the end of the season So we old caps, and pennants, that were made of our school colors, to tke students This d1dn't bring ts much proflt but it was a start ln our bank account The next attempt to ralse money was a skatlng party whlch was held at Bunker hlll It was a ralny nlght and we only made Sl 85 but we were stlll glad to get it The Pep Club also sponsored the queen but the account of that will annual Then during March, as we have held a Curtiss Magazine Sale Bu differently thls year The Pep crowning of the basketball appear elsewhere 1 thls in years past, our school lt was conducted a little Club sponsored lt andthe proflt vas to be used in buying a new trophy case for school There were two tears to compete in thl sale One was made up of the fre hmen and seniors and the other was the sophomores and Junlors The goal for each team was set 3100, the goal for the clool being 8200 Each week there was a pr1,e glven to the person who had sold the most sub scriptions that eek Norman Jasper received a huntlng knife for the flrst week and Georgla Baker got a small, vhite, wool dog for belng the best seller for the last week The top off prize, an Eversharp Pen and Pencil set vent to Georgla, also, whole contest Ja per was next our llttle Pep for selling the most subscrlptlons durlng th Georgia sold 370 worth of magazines Norman hlgh salesman with w45 This put Q55 mor ln Club fund Next we planned to have a skating party at rink but something changed our plans I guess you know that that was the tornado Eut we decided not to glve up so we held a party at the Gille pie rlnk ve made a profit the re and came back with a check for 314 50 to put in the bank Then came one of the blggest thlngs we girls attempted to do The fathers of the basketball bofs d clced to glV0 them . We weighed the idea in our minds for awhile Before saying yes to such a task. But after a few changes in the menu we decided to at- tempt it. We spent most of one afternoon decorating the tables. The speaker was Bob Klenk and the toastmaster, Father Walsh The menu consisted of fruit punch, celery, olives, pickles, lettuce salad, corn, mashed potatoes, swiss steak, gravy, rolls, ice cream, cake, and coffee The girls who helped erve were Bonnie Cregory, Helen B rns, Betty Sheltcn, Dolores hatlack, Jean Shelton, Georgia Baker, and Mary Lou Woolsey We were assisted in the kitchen by Miss Shultz, Mrs Gaspard, Urs Thomas, and mrs Hook The men paid us S15 for our work Then came the last thlng the Pep Club sponsored this year. UGrandad Steps Outn nGrandad Steps Out,H a three act farce-comedy written by Felicia Metcalfe was presented by the senior class -on gApril 30, 1948. The following is a synopsis of the play: Grandad, ill a year ago, is still considered an invalid by his daughter, Mrs Morton, who feeds him on nothing but soup and crackers while he dreams of thick, juicy steaks. An old friend, nBig Jim Mahoneyn returns from nout in Arizonan and plans to stage a supper for all his boyhood pals. Jim helps Grandad make'plans to get out of the house whh out his daughter's knowing. Unfortunately all his clothes are in storage. His grandson, Kip, has come for a visit, so they bribe the maid to sneak Kip's clothes out of his room. When Grandad appears in the suit wearing a red bow tie, his coat sleeves nearly up to his elbows, his pants half way up to his knees, the audience really shakes the rafters. The two old men sneak out of the house with nobody the wiser A nosey old maid across the street sees them and tele phones Mrs Morton, who scoffs at the idea, saying her father is asleep on the sofa It is really Tilly the maid who has been bribed by Grandad to cover up with a blanket, and snore at intervals This is done quite efficiently Kip, who has a date to go to the movies with the girl next door, gets a shock when he finds his suit missing His older sister, Betty, and her boyfriend make the di covery tht Grandad has disappeared Assuming that a burglar has tolen K1p's suit and kidnapped Grandad, they notify the police The tempo now gets faster and faster While the detective, a regular 'human bloodhound,n and the family are out looking for Grandad, he and Big Jim slip into the house with mysterious bandages around their heads A surprising romance develops, and Just before the final curtain the biggest laugh of all comes when Big Jim wana Abby H1ggins,the coy old maid, home clad only in a long night shirt, loaned to him by Grandad Cast Mrs Laura Morton Joann Hackney CA pleasant looking woman of about forty! Wanda Jean Hudson Crowning of The Queen The Crowning of the Basket Ball Queen took place on the night of our first home basket ball game which was Decembarl, 1947 It was very pretty and I think everyone enjoyed it The oueen was chosen by the number of basket ball season tickets sold When tt curtalns were opened there ppeared on ond sldeof the stage, Lloyd Wiltshire, the announcer, and on the other, Mary Lou Woolsey, Pep Club President, who was to crown the queen Then from the right entrance, the cheerleaders led an honor guard of basket ball boys who formed two lines down tre center of the gym through which the queen and her candldates filed Enterimg just before the queen wa little Bonnie Sue Bohlmeyer carrying the queen's crown which rested on a satln pillow Entering the gym next, was the freshman candiciate, Jean Shelton, and escort, Charles Johnson Shortly after came the sophomore candldate Vernetta Hausman, escorted by Dwight Taylor Next came the jUH1OP candldate, Georgia Baker, escorted by Vernon Matlack After all of these were as embled on the stage there followed the honorable queen, Hansen, escorted by the basket ball captain, Eugene They ascended the steps where Margie knelt on a plush The basket ball guard, the announcer and escorts all dressed 1n their basket ball uniforms Mary Lou was dressed in a dark aqua formal Jean Shelton wore formal Vernetta Hausman wore a light blue formal Margie Taylor cushkm were Woolsey a white Georgia Baker wore a pink net formal And Queen Margie was attire d in a formal of black and white The candidates and Mary Lou all wore corsages of yellow carnations Next Mary Lou took the crown Bonnie Sue and placed it upon the Taylor helped her to be seated in ed her with the basket ball that game of yellow carnations from queen's head Then Eugene the royal chair and preset was to be used in the first After the queen was crowned, the cheerleaders, Charlotte Shultz and Betty Bauer gave the schogl yell, and salute to Margie The candidates were then moved to the edge of the stage and just as the game was ready to begin, Queen Margie threw the basket ball to the Captain Eugene Taylor. This is the first time Shipman Highias ever chosen a bask! ball queen, and lt worked out so successfully that we hope to have one every year. Thomas February 19, i19l+8. As usual, Wildcat is in a predicament. His English grade is low and unless he completes an acceptable theme in time he can't graduate and won't get the pedigreed pup his dad has promised him as a commencement present. To make matters worse that little pest Angel iso called? is at Willie's heels in- terrupting him and teasing him to be her partner on the class day hay ride Marcella is after him for his class dues, and Willie, as usual 1S broke In spite of them all, however, he does manage to finish the theme and leaves it, only to have the wind blow away all but one page on which Angel had written Will1e's real opinion of the book, in Will1e's handwriting It was a three word opinion UThe book stinks H .Miss Curtis 15 all for flunking Willie outright but finally consents to give him one more chance This time it's the last Willie really gets in and pitches and has his review all neatly written out Then he rescues a stray pup not pedigreed, just pldn dog The pup chews up his precious theme' To make matters worse, Miss Curtis trips over the string Gladys had tied to trip Willie, and then sits on the tack also intended for Wil lie Things look plenty black for Willie, until, like magic, the scene clears the pup he rescued turns out to be Miss CuTt1S'S own dog Gladys' fesses up about the string and the tack, and soon Willie is all set to graduate in a blaze of glory CAST Marcella Doris Heyen Wildcat Willie Cln the doghousel Gladys CHis sister? Kenna 000000ol01000l0lo00l00ilo0la000l000 Kathryn G6OPg18 Ba er Dolores Carol Fl fClassmates of W11ll6'S, Betty Bauer GLEE CLUB REPORT 1947 '48 Once again it is time to write the reports for the annual, which I hope is bigger and better than ever before As I'm reporting on the Glee Club I think I can safely say that everyone has had a swell time singing the many beautiful songs this year le had an enrollment of about 50 students taking part I was, however, tue largest group for quite sometime he sponsored a skating party in November to raise m ney to buy more music The Christmas Vespers were held on December 19, and we a fairly large crovd Ahnost everyone went to Gillespie to the Concert April which was the biggest ever held ln the 8 years The Sextet, Cwary Lou Uoolsey, Marilyn Lynch, Betty Bauer, Betty Shelton, Doris heyen, nd Dolores Matlackj enjoyed singing its fev songs, as well as the Nutty Nine, had 3, u has C cluding the Sextet and Bob Duncan, Ronnie Shelton, and Vernon Patlackj le all hope that we can continue next year Our spring festival was held Friday lay 7 We had a nice program and a large crowd attended we want to thank Miss Shultz for her patience in working with us I'm sure we know how lucky we are to have such a wonderful music teacher and do appreciate her very much Dolores Matlack hALLOVEEN CARNIVAL On October Sl 1947, the Booster Club sponsored a Halloween Carnival, to which the school was invited to have stands furnished by the various classes The public was invited to attend, and admission was charged for those who did not come masked Cash prizes were given for the largest oar of 6orn,.largebt sweet potato, tallest stalk of corn and the oddest shaped radish A bubble gum blowing contest was held among several kids and a cash award was given to the one that blew the largest bubble There were also cash prizes given to the ugliest, prettiest, and best dressed person that came masked Each class had one or more stands for the purpose of making money for its class. The freshmen sold chances on an electric train. The sophomores sold chances on a pressure cooker and had a basket ball throw, The junior class had a baseball throw, The senior class had a bingo stand and the food and drink stand, The profits made at the food and drink stand were used as a part of payment for this year's school annual, The Booster Club sponsored a home made candy stand. Conference and defeated Modesto twice, Palmyra once, and Hardin once. At the close of the basketball season we started playing volley ball in the gym. Most of us agree that we like bakketball the best. We didn't have a basketball or volley ball tournament between the classes as had been done in previous years for several reasons. We also did a few gymnastics during the winter but our acts were far from perfect. Now that spring is here we are back to the softball field again.
