The Boys, Athletic Club The outdoor exercises and good sports not only afford great pleasure and help build up the physical body, but are also a great asset mentally, especially when study- ing in school. lt was in sight of this fact that the boys' athletic club was organized in the first week of school. hlr. Klanley acted as supervisor and took great interest in the club and since each member was enthusiastic and in earnest, possibilities of a successful year in athletics was evident. The following oflicers were elected: Presi- dent, lfdward Lettmang Secretary and Treasurer, Royce Locke. 'i he first activities were in baseball. A new diamond was marked out and prep- arations for a league team began. Supplies were needed before any progress could be inade so the money was donated by each member and th necessary things were obtained. At once two teams were organized, and the drilling was taken up with earnest. lt fstQ1i1til'eVideT1F front the verye than there were Babe Rntlwg jyalterfxlohnsoiis and Ty Cobbs when the eager spectators witnessed the star playing of some of Ute ineinbeii of both nines. The position that the NVashington team now holds was the goal in view when the nine went to Bear Creek to play their high school team. An interesting game it was, but we lost by a close score. The interest did not subside when the first game was lost, but all were in earnest until the end of the season. The home town team was played and we proved to them in an interesting game that we were their masters in the great art of playing ball, Qeven if hir. llanley did pitch for tlieml. A return game was played with Bear Creek, and two games were played with the Nichols-Galesburg city team, each one proved interesting, and the Shioc nine was able to hang up their baseball caps at the end of the season with great pride. Later in the fall' Soccer football proved an interesting game. Sides were chosen among the boys and many hard games were played, and in this we came to the conclus- sion tliat it takes a good athlete in Soccer football as well as it does in baseball, football and other outdoor activities. At the 'present time the boys are hunting up their baseball togs and expect to invade the surrounding towns as' soon as the weather conditions permit. XVe know they all have the talent and trust them to put it into practice. Page Forly-four
